Cynopsis: Classified
Advantage
04/12/11
Good morning – it’s Tuesday, April 12, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cyn opsis: Classified Advantage!
Manage the micro in accordance with the macro.
Everyone has day to day tasks to take care of, but you must look beyond the day to day and always keep an eye on the company’s goals. Don’t insulate yourself within your job description, adopt a broader vision than what has to be done by 5p. Handle your responsibilities as if you owned the company, not just an employee.
Make decisions from the view point of the boss.
Take the initiative in new programs and responsibilities. This demonstrates your willingness to not only take on new things, but also your chance to show you can be an effective leader.
When you get ideas about how systems can be improved, write it down and then study the pros and cons. If you decide to present the idea to your boss, research it thoroughly, include both the upside and the faults, such as money spent retraining or buying new programs or equipment. A presentation with just the upside is incomplete and rarely impressive. Include the short and long term goals along with costs. Present a complete picture, be thorough and convincing.
Study, know your stuff. Be the go to person when people need help. Build your reputation as being reliable and credible. Always be willing to give assistance when asked. Bosses will notice. Don’t be afraid to say I don’t know, because if you steer people wrong, not only will they remember, but so will the people they tell.
Make sure you and your co-workers are on the same page. Meet with them often to avoid duplication and share ideas.
Learn how to make compelling presentations and do them as often as possible. This is a job few people enjoy, but if you do it well, it is the best way to get noticed as a good communicator and leader.
Always look to expand your knowledge of things that are important to the company. If your boss uses a different computer program than you, learn it. Find out what programs the big wigs are using and learn them too. If they know you can hit the ground running, faster than your co-workers, you’ll have a tremendous advantage.
Offer to mentor new employees, attend conferences, take leadership classes, self educate, find someone who will challenge and question you so you can discuss a problem from different perspectives.
Getting promoted takes a lot of work, so create a written plan on what goals you want to achieve and how you plan to achieve them.
Next Issue: Tap it!

Did you ever wonder what it meant to really be empowered? There are so many perspectives on this topic. Merriam-Webster defines empowerment as: “to give official authority or legal power; enable; to promote the self-actualization or influence of.
We often think of empowerment as someone else giving something to us. From this day forward, you can change that perspective. You can empower yourself. If we wait for others to empower us, we are not in control of our destiny.
Henry Ford once said, “if you think you can or you can’t, you will ALWAYS be right.” Let’s make ourselves believe that we can be empowered in all walks of our lives. Here are four easy steps:
Improve Your Confidence No matter what the topic, situation, or problem, confidence carries you through. It is much better to have tried and not succeeded quite the way you wanted, rather than never to have tried at all. Mistakes are really nothing more than opportunities to learn.
Make Decisions If you are usually the one agreeing to everyone else’s decisions and preferences, ask yourself why you are so willing to agree. If you find that this doesn’t apply to you, then continue what you are doing, but be careful that you didn’t go too far over the continuum to blatant disregard for others. Consider those affected by the decisions, but keep yourself centered on what is right for you.
Practice Assertiveness Assertiveness is not aggression, force, dominance, or winning-at-all-costs. Rather, assertive individuals are able to diplomatically and firmly speak up for themselves. They know their boundaries and set them. When others overstep their boundaries, they can articulate what happened, and confidently correct the situation. Most importantly, they do so without guilt.
Live By Your Belief System This is the most important ingredient to achieving true self-empowerment. These beliefs take many forms. We can believe in our values, our abilities, and our desire to be happy. Each person’s beliefs are different, just like our fingerprints. One thing holds true for all we must understand our beliefs and live by them.
If you find yourself feeling submissive about something unreasonable, recall these empowerment principles. They should help keep you balanced and in control of your future.

I was laid off in 2009 due to the economy. It took me 11 months to find a new position, which required a move. I was in this new position 15 months, when a month ago I was restructured out of it. I have letters from each company stating the reason I was laid off and that each was not due to performance. What is the best way to handle this? I.E. cover letters, interviews, etc… when applying for jobs online so I can have a fair chance at another position?
During this recessionary time, it is not unusual for individuals to be downsized through no fault of their own. While it was once thought that when looking for a job it was best to have a job, that thinking is no longer always the case.
The best way to handle this situation is to be honest about the downsizing and give some specific reasons why the downsizing occurred, i.e. loss of market share; reduced pricing caused the need for additional cost management options, loss of a major account, etc. Then focus on the specific accomplishments you achieved during your time with the organization. Link those accomplishments to the responsibilities and needs of the open job. Also, identify the key traits/competencies you bring to an organization, and make sure they are bona fide traits that other credible people provided to you as personal feedback. In your cover letter you can even state where the feedback came from, so that you give more credibility to your statements.
I have worked in New York City for over 20 years but have been looking for work for a year and a half.I am willing to relocate and therefore want to seek employment in another state but am concerned that I will be immediately rejected because I would not be a local resident. What is the best way to handle this?
First, you may consider not putting your address on your resume and just have your email and phone number- that may eliminate employer assumptions regarding location. If you are targeting specific companies, try to determine if the company has a relocation plan of any type. If they do, then the hurdle of being non-local is minimized. Assuming they are not paying for relocation, determine if you are willing to absorb the costs yourself. Be proactive and communicate to the prospective employer the reasons why relocation is a viable option, i.e. ability to rent your current home, or emphasize the benefits of living in the new geographic area. Since you have been working in New York City, some employers may be concerned that your earnings were too high. Do your homework about the cost of living and salaries in the new region. State that you recognize the difference in the cost of living, and that your salary range is conducive to that particular area. This is all about removing the objections proactively, as opposed to waiting for them to come up in an interview.
