Good Morning. It’s Tuesday, April 11, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the NCTA conference in Atlanta.
Disney-ABC TV Group will offer ad-supported, full-length episodes of four ABC primetime series online at www.ABC.com during a two-month experiment. Current episodes of Lost, Desperate Housewives and Commander in Chief, along with the entire present season of Alias will be streamed free of charge in May and June. The episodes will be available the day after they premiere on ABC, in a 16×9 streaming format giving viewers a cinema-like feel. Users will be able to pause and move back and forth between episode “chapters” but not have the ability to fast-forward through the commercials. The Group also will launch SOAPNETIC, the first broadband channel aimed at soap fans on April 17. An extension of SOAPnet channel, it will provide episodes of nine current soap operas, classic and original programming to Verizon consumer broadband customers.
In a multi-year deal, TV One has acquired from Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution the off-net rights for the current UPN series All of Us and Eve, as well as library titles includes Martin, Living Single, Roc, For Your Love, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, The Parent ?Hood, Wanda at Large, All About the Andersons, Fastlane and A Man Called Hawk. The deal also includes recent episodes of Showtime at the Apollo, plus a movie package which includes such titles as The Color Purple, Malcolm X, Round Midnight, New Jack City, Strictly Business, Purple Rain, and Shaft among others.
NBC Programming Notes: Three new reality series have been given their launch dates – Last Comic Standing returns for a third season on Tuesday, May 30 at 9p (tho the premiere episode will be a 2-hour gig beginning at 8p). America’s Got Talent, the new Simon Cowell talent search, will kick off on June 21 at 8p, airing regularly on Wednesdays at 9p, with a second weekly results show on Thursdays at 830 as of July 13. Treasure Hunters will debut on Sunday, June 18 at 8p, before falling into its regular Monday 9p berth. Coming off the schedule after this week is Heist, which has been airing on Wednesday evenings, most recently at 9p.
Elsewhere from the world of Simon Cowell, American Idol‘s season finale date has been set for May 24, 8-10p. The episode that brings the search down to the final two is scheduled for May 23 at 8p.
Attention Real World devotees and the citizens of Denver — the 18th season of Real World will be in your back yard, with production to begin this spring and the premeire of the new season set to kick off in the fall on MTV.
Matt Lauer has signed on to stick with Today for three more years, taking him through 2011 with an annual paycheck of approx $13 million. Rumors abounded yesterday that Meredith Vieira would be paid more than Lauer, but not so – reportedly, her annual check will be in the $12 million neighborhood. I knew this tidbit was important to you.
National Geographic Channel has ordered a third season of its series Hunter and Hunted III, about investigating animal attacks from around the world using forensic techniques to solve each case. The new season will consist of 6 episodes. The network has also ordered up three limited series:
- Earth: The Biography – 5 episodes, an unprecedented insight into how our planet works, shown similarly to how a human body operates ? how it was born, ages and how it will one day die.
- Ultimate Factories (working title) – 6 episodes, a look inside the mega-factories of America, from car manufacturing to Harley Davidsons, and all the challenges they impose on mass production.
- Everyday Things (working title) – 3 episodes, exploring the little things that are sometimes bothersome in modern-day life.
