Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 10, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Topps, which released its first set of baseball cards 60+ years ago, is launching two apps, Topps Pennant and Topps Bunt, for the iPhone and iPad. Described as a “modern box score,” the Topps Pennant (http://pennant.topps.com) app for iPhone and iPad ($3.99) allows fans to re-create 60+ years of baseball plays and stats, including every team, every season, every game, and every play from last the most recent games all the way back to 1952. Additionally, fans can check out the box scores and play-by-play from games in the current MLB season as well as re-live baseball memories from the past. The Topps Bunt (http://bunt.topps.com) app is fantasy baseball social gaming app, said to be simple and easy to use, which is available on the iPad (free). Baseball fans can use Topps Bunt to collect their favorite players, earn points based on how well their players perform, and trade and compete with other groups of fans. Sadly there is no gum – whether you liked the gum or not – for many it was a key part of the experience. Topps also creates a range of sports and entertainment products including Major League Baseball, National Football League, English Premiere League, Bundesliga, Indian Premiere League, WWE, UFC, Wacky Packages, Garbage Pail Kids and other trading cards, sticker album collections, and collectible games. The company’s confectionery brands include Ring Pop, Push Pop, Baby Bottle Pop, Bazooka bubble gum, Sharkies and Juicy Drop Pop products.

LICENSING

Bandai Asia and Chupa Chups enter into a licensing partnership to develop a line of Chupa Chups-themed products for distribution in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines and Korea. The first products debut this month, beginning with a line of Chupa Chups cotton towels (five different 30×30 bath towels), featuring designs, colors and flavors of its iconic lollipop. Bandai is also creating Chupa Chups-themed smartphone accessories, including phone stands in lollipop colors (“flavors”) strawberry, cola, lemon, cherry, apple and orange. Further products are in the works.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney XD picks up a second season of the live-action comedy Mr. Young for the US, from Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana Enterprises and Thunderbird Films. Season 2 (26 episodes) will debut in summer 2012. Mr. Young was created by Dan Signer, was also created and serves as showrunner on Disney Channel’s A.N.T. Farm, and he also was a sr. writer/producer on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and The Suite Life on Deck. The series is produced by Thunderbird Films in association with Corus’ YTV. Nelvana Enterprises is the international distribution agent for Mr. Young, while Nelvana and Thunderbird are co-distributing the series in the US.

Nickelodeon premieres the new half-hour Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special, Going for the Games, Glory and Gold: Will These Kids Make It?, Sunday, April 15, at 9p. The special features some talented teen athletes and their unending training and various sacrifices they make to win a chance to compete on the US Olympic Team.

Boomerang will mark Earth Day with the help of Captain Planet. The Captain Planet Foundation, which encourages kids to serve as environmental stewards for the planet, lends a hand by selecting 28 episodes of Captain Planet to air in a 14-hour marathon on Earth Day, Sunday, April 22, beginning at 6a. The Captain Planet programming marathon also includes the pilot episode, A Hero For Earth, at 8a. Additionally, the original 72×30 episodes created for the series, Captain Planet and the Planeteers airs daily on Boomerang at 6a. Six seasons of Captain Planet and the Planeteers were produced in the original run of the series, featuring the voice talents of multiple guest celebrities, including Whoopi Goldberg (Gaia), Meg Ryan (Dr. Blight), Martin Sheen (Sly Sludge), Edward Asner (Hoggish Greedly), James Coburn (Looten Plunder), Dean Stockwell (Duke Nukem) and Sting (Zarm). Boomerang is Turner Broadcasting System’s commercial-free home of classic animation channel.

Radical Sheep Productions releases the first DVD of its animated Disney Junior Canada series Stella and Sam today, Tuesday, April 10, 2012. The DVD, titled Stella and Sam, Follow Me, includes six episodes and two bonus episodes in English and French from season one of the series. Additionally, Radical Sheep, in partnership with Silent Joe, is releasing The Stella and Sam Album, Featuring Emilie Mover, which includes the show’s theme song and 4 seasonal songs featured on Disney Junior Canada. The 14 original songs, inspired from the show, are available on iTunes and on CD Baby.

First Book, a nonprofit that provides books to kids in need, will now be offering the Tween 9-14 targeted Cricket magazine, as well as other kid’s magazines from ePals, an education media company, to the 27,000 schools and programs in its national network. The magazines will be available through the First Book Marketplace (www.fbmarketplace.org), which is available exclusively to teachers and program leaders that work with kids from low-income families. An annual classroom subscription (includes 30 copies of each issue) retails for $1,018, but is available through First Book for $513. In addition to Cricket, First Book will offer a range of magazines for all ages, including Babybug, Ladybug, Click, Spider, and Ask. Carus Publishing Company, which is comprised of divisions including Cricket Magazine Group, Cobblestone Publishing and Open Court Publishing, publishes all of these magazine titles. Carus was acquired by ePals in 2011.

According to a recent The Family Room (f/k/a Just Kid Inc.) study of parents of K9-17 and K9-17, Quantifying The Impact of Co-Viewing On Household Purchases, parents and kids have a different relationship than previous generations, including having a more shared experience through television. According to parents, the co-viewing experience also results 67% of kids (top 2 box) frequently pointing out products after seeing them advertised on TV, with 1 in 3 kids wanting specific products seen advertised on TV while watching together, and with half of parents actually purchasing something requested by their kid identified during the co-viewing time. The Family Room (www.familyroomllc.com) conducted the research, overseen by Janet Oak, in September 2011 with 1,299 parents of K9-17 and 760 K9-14 (virtually an even split of male and females in both parents and kids). Some of the findings include:

 

  • Parents and kids have a very different type of relationship than in past generations with 62% saying they have a closer relationship with their kids, than their parents had with them.
  • The nature of parent/child relationship is undergoing dramatic changes with 46% of moms surveyed saying they consider their child to be one of their best friends.
  • 97% of parents and 96% of kids in the survey say they always/sometimes watch TV shows together.
  • Other activities parents and kids say they do together always/sometimes include: listen to the radio — parents 93%/kids 87%; go online – parents 89%/kids 85%; read magazines – parents 76%/kids 66%; flyers or store inserts – parents 68%/kids 63%
  • 57% of parents surveyed also reported that they were more fearful of disobeying their parents than their child is of them.
  • 42% Parents also said they are less strict with their child than their parents were with them.

In her new role, Martinez will oversee the direction and growth of AGP brands, including Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake, through new and existing licensing and retail strategies, as well as launch new properties.
