Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 8, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Little Airplane Productions and HIT Entertainment partner for their first joint project the interactive animated series Billy Birthday Boy (52×11), which they will feature with broadcasters at MipJunior next month.  Developed together by Little Airplane and HIT, Billy Birthday Boy revolves around a young boy that saves birthday parties that have gone awry.  The series features an educational curriculum that focuses on the development of planning skills, and a birthday party at the end of each episode.

TFOU, TF1’s (France) youth-targeted programming block, and Alphanim, part of Gaumont Group, are partnering to develop a new preschool CGI animated series Calimero (104×11), which is based on a character created by the animation studio Pagot in 1963.  The new Calimero series is slated to deliver in 2013 to coincide with property’s 50th anniversary.  Alphanim will distribute the series and manage the brand internationally on behalf of rights owner CalidraTF1 Licences has been named the agent for France, while TF1 Video has acquired the video rights to the future series.

Scholastic and Ruckus Media Group, a digital publisher/creator of interactive stories and educational games, team to launch the new kid-targeted transmedia imprint Scholastic Ruckus.  Scholastic Ruckus will publish noted kid’s authors across multiple platforms, including print, e-books and enhanced e-books, with Ruckus Media publishing interactive story apps.  Scholastic will publish, market and distribute titles for infants through teens developed under the Ruckus imprint via Scholastic’s book clubs and book fairs as well as through retail outlets and libraries.  Scholastic will also manage publishing rights for the print and e-books titles worldwide.  With more than a dozen projects currently in development, the first releases are set for 2012.  In addition to its existing intellectual property from Ruckus titles and new projects developed for both digital and print, Ruckus Media is acquiring rights to out-of-print backlist titles to publish in print or e-book formats, which will be distributed by Scholastic under the Ruckus imprint.

Hasbro Studios expands its reach into Asia with the completion of new broadcast programming deals.  The kid-targeted English-language channel Okto (Singapore) picks up the animated series Transformers Prime and the newest half-hour animated series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.  Both series have begun airing on the channel during the day.  Public broadcaster EBS (South Korea) acquires Transformers Prime for primetime.  Terrestrial channel TVB Jade (Hong Kong) also picks up Transformers Prime, which will debut on the channel this month.

Zodiak Kids‘ production company Tele Images Productions will showcase the pilot of its 2D animated pilot Mistral Ranch (26×30) at Cartoon Forum later this month and Mipcom next month.  Set for delivery in 2012, the series was developed for TF1 (France).  Mistral ranch revolves around four teens and the ranch the formed near the seas, where they tend to their horses and care for other horses that need a safe home.  Tele Images Productions is also developing the property on across multiple platforms, including a series published by Hachette, and a massively multiplayer online game (MMOG), where kids will be able to “adopt” their own horse at a virtual Mistral Ranch.

Nelvana Enterprises, which is part of Corus Entertainment, and Thunderbird Films have completed the sale of the live-action comedy Mr. Young to Disney XD channels in the US and its channels in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Netherlands, Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.  Mr. Young is expected to debut in most of those territories this year.  Produced by Thunderbird Films in association with Corus’ YTV, Mr. Young was created by Dan Signer (A.N.T. Farm).  Thunderbird Films is currently in production on a second season of the series, bringing the total number of episodes to 52.  Nelvana Enterprises is handling international distribution for Mr. Young, while Nelvana and Thunderbird are co-distributing the series in the US.

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE), the exclusive licensing and merchandising agent for Spin Master’s Tech Deck, partners with Zazzle to offer new print-on-demand Official Tech Deck Gear product line (apparel and accessories) at

Rue La La (, an online members only retailer, launches Little Rue this week, which will offer stylin’ products (e.g. apparel, accessories etc.) for kids and families.  Little Rue will also feature a Facebook-only initiative and That’s So Little Rue Tumblr page at , which is full of games, candid photos, among other things.  In celebration of the debut of Little Rue, Rue La La is donating all of its net profits from its newest offering to kid-targeted charities selected by its members and associates.

Marblemedia appoints Blake Tohana to the newly created position of CFO and COO. Tohana will work close with Partners/Executive Producers Mark Bishop and Matthew Hornburg.  Tohana will oversee the expansion of new divisions and departments, including the interactive group and its international sales and distribution arm, Distribtion360.  He is also responsible for growing marblemedia’s new Factual & Lifestyle division, which will debuts its first cross platform property, What’s in a Name?, on History Television (Canada) on September 12, 2011.  Tohana most recently served as EVP and CFO, Magna Entertainment.  He previously held senior management positions, including CFO, at Fireworks Entertainment and helped take the company public ahead of it being acquired by CanWest Global Communications.

Starz Digital Media, the digital and on-demand licensing unit of Starz, promotes Mara Winokur to SVP/Digital Media, and Business Development and Strategy, Starz Media.  Additionally, David Katz moves up to VP/Digital Media.  Winokur had been VP/Digital Media and Business Development.  As head of the Starz Digital Media division, she and her team will manage digital distribution, licensing, syndication, content and vendor partnerships with a range of partners and distributors from cable/satellite/telco multichannel video affiliates and internet/mobile distributors, as well as game and social media developers/publishers and consumer electronics partners.  The video content the team distributes and markets includes theatrical features to short-form animation from each of Starz’ business units including Starz Entertainment (pay TV), Anchor Bay Entertainment (home entertainment), Manga Entertainment (Japanese Anime) and Film Roman (animation).  Katz, who had been Executive Director, expands his role to include responsibility for product development, partner relationships, and global multiplatform marketing across all business models.  He will continue to oversee the creation, development, and execution of Starz Digital Media digital extensions and extractions, such as originals, apps and games.
