CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

09/08/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, September 8, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The multi-network telethon scheduled for this Friday at 8p called Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast, has expanded the time their phone lines will be open to cover much of the broadcast day.  Lines will open at 7am ET for the morning news shows, and continuing all day until the end of the network late night shows. Various programs during the course of the day either thru talent or on-screen advisories, will inform the viewers where they can donate tot he Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The networks have also announced that all fund raising will go to either the American Red Cross or The Salvation Army, depending on the donor’s preference.

And it’s not just the broadcast networks carrying this special on Friday.  You’ll remember the broadcasters offered Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast to cable networks and radio stations, and many have accepted that offer, including: AmericanLife TV, CNBC, Court TV, Fox Movie Channel, FUEL TV, Fox College Sports Pacific, GSN, Lifetime, MSNBC, Showtime, SPEED Channel, Style Network, ABC Family, Black Family Channel, Bravo, E!, Fox Reality, FSN Ohio, FSN South, FSN West, FX, G4, Ovation, Oxygen, PAX, SOAPnet, TBS, The Tennis Channel, Trio, TV Guide Channel, TV One, USA Network, WGN and many Infinity Radio stations.  The special will also be broadcast in more than 100 countries around the world including programming services in Latin America, Brazil, Italy, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France, Taiwan, Asia, India, the Middle East, the United Kingdom, Greece, Spain, Japan, Israel and Iceland.

Tonight’s Premiere:
Fox:
The Reunion at 9p* MORE GOOD STUFF *The appearance of Judge John Roberts before the Senate Judiciary Committee has been scheduled for next week.  PBS will provide coverage of the hearings, including opening statements, Q&A with Judge Roberts, as well as outside testimony, beginning Monday at noon. Coverage is expected to continue day to day for the remainder of the week.  PBS’ schedule is Monday 12n-6p; and Tuesday -Friday 930a-6p, always with the possibility of runover.  Coverage will also be provided by CBS Digital Broadcast Network as well as streamed on CBSNews.com.

TNT’s The Closer had its season finale on Monday, September 5th and 6.3 million viewers tuned in, making it the most watched episode of the series since its premiere.  For the full 13 episodes, The Closer averaged a 3.7 national household rating with 5.5 million total viewers.  Among the all-important adult demos, The Closer averaged 2.4 million A25-54, and 1.9 million A18-49.  The Closer has been picked up for a second 15-episode season, set to debut in 2006.

PBS will begin offering the broadcast series NerdTV as a downloadable series, available to be shared, copied, and/or posted on your blog site.  The 13 one hour episodes of interviews by Robert X. Cringley with various people from the technology field and interviewer, can be downloaded as mpeg-video, or a variety of audio formats, in whole or in except form. The series is distributed under a Creative Commons license, to allow – nay encourage! – viewers to redistribute or edit their own non-commercial version. Each episode will be made available on a weekly basis after the launch date, and all previous episodes will continue to be available through the NerdTV web site.

The National Lampoon Network, which reaches some 5 million 18-24 year olds at 650 campuses nationwide, has announced their fall line-up and among the new offerings are:

  • Gumby:  The original claymation series with all your buddies – Gumby, Pokey, Nopey and the Blockheads – is on the late-night schedule.
  • Beef Baloney: A sketch comedy series that, in the words of the network, “barely passes inspection, twisted fiction, haphazard on location….Quality television.”
  • Dis-Orientation Casting Tour: With former reality TV “stars” as host and judges, National Lampoon is conducting student-casting contests at 25 universities this fall looking for new National Lampoon talent.
  • Not So Silent Pictures:  Shot before a live audience in LA, a sketch comedy troupe improvs the voices of ancient silent movies.

Broadcast evening news coverage was up considerably last week, as you would imagine, as all three covered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Leading the pack for the week (Aug 29-Sept 2) was NBC Nightly News with an average of 10.6 million viewers (up 31% compared to the previous week), ABC’s World News Tonight 9.5 million (up 21%) and CBS Evening News 7.7 million (up 20%).  Among A25-54, NBC delivered a 3.2 rating for the week, ABC a 3.0 and CBS a 2.0.  (Note: numbers reflect only the standard 30m news broadcast and does not include any expanded coverage or broadcasts.)

News Corp. will acquire IGN Entertainment Inc., an internet company with multiple sites catering primarily to young men interested in videogames.  According to The Wall Street Journal, News Corp. will pay $650 million for the company.  Web sites included under the IGN umbrella are GameSpy.com, TeamXbox.com and IGN.com, as well as RottenTomatoes.com which is frequented by movie fans. Last month, News Corp. announced it would acquire Scout Media, Inc., publishers of sports magazines and owners of a couple hundred sports team websites.  And finally, last July News Corp. announced it would acquire Intermix Media, another company with website popular with the teen crowd, including MySpace.com. Seeing a trend here?

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1966 – The first episode of “Star Trek” is aired on NBC.  Despite the enduring popularity of the show and its many spin-offs, it was not popular in its own time, placing only as high as 52nd among all TV series in its best season.  Originally given a five-year mission, the Enterprise‘s intrepid crew fought Klingons, outwitted Romulans, and displaying Captain Kirk’s numerous torn tunics.  But the crew was helplessly overmatched by NBC executives, who decided to boldly cancel the show and the mission after just three seasons.
