NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

ABC is kicking off its fall television line-up by premiering The Goldbergs, The Trophy Wife and Back in the Game through WATCHABC.com and the WATCH ABC app for mobile devices. The first episode will be available through on-demand until Sept. 17, and all the shows will premiere on ABC on Sept. 24 and 25.

Blue, starring Julia Stiles (The Bourne Ultimatum) as a single mom/secret escort, is in production for season three on YouTube channel WIGS. Eric Stoltz (Mask) will join the cast, as well as Stiles’ real-life sister, Jane O’Hara (Law & Order) playing her on-screen sib. The top scripted drama on YouTube, with over 26 million views, Blue also became available on Hulu.com in June.

CONTENT MEDIA

Verizon will now use Tribune Media Services solutions to power all of its FiOS TV entertainment platforms including set-top boxes, PC’s, and other mobile devices, it was announced Wednesday. TMS currently offers its programming guides to companies such as Microsoft, Google, TiVo and Comcast.

In addition to its U.S. product launch event on September 10, Apple confirmed a similar happening in Beijing to take place on September 11. Presumably, the next generation of iPhones will be unveiled at both events, confirming the company’s strategy to make China a priority market.

Dreamwork’s Animation and Technicolor’s online video store, M-Go struck a deal to insert its digital services in LG’s 2012 and 2013 Smart TV models. M-Go is also rolling out a more personalized service, in which a consumer can create “cards” that show previously purchased movies, movie wish lists and favorite actors and directors. M-Go has a contract with five movie studios, and already features its app on Samsung and Vizo TVs, Blu-ray players and various tablets.

RESEARCH

TV’s primetime hours are also prime time for mobile video viewing, according to TubeMogulresearch released Wednesday. Key findings included:

  • One in four video ads were viewed through Apple and Android tablets between the hours of 8 p.m. and midnight.
  • Android phones are used for video viewing more than iPhones during prime time hours.
  • Video viewing on mobile devices peak over the weekends: 22 percent of all video views on Apple take place on Saturday; Android logs in at 15 percent.

In other words: Smart marketers will target the evenings and weekends to spread their messages.

ComScore numbers reveal that Bloomberg Digital TV enjoyed its largest number of unique global visitors in July 2013: 5.2 million, compared to the 1.3 million the company recorded in November 2012. Digiday reports with an audience that big, Bloomberg is able to charge a whopping $75 CPM a video.
In Other Words: The high fee is a result of an 18 month-old digital overhaul, which threw out the traditional Bloomberg video clip in favor of 200 high quality original videos a day, which the company says is rare in the current digital video market.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Live event and on-demand streaming service Livestream now has an app available for Roku; this is Livestream’s first dalliance with a connected TV device. The company carries more than 60 local U.S. stations and digital streaming from outlets including the Associate Press and The New York Times. It also broadcasts live events such as the Grammys, Tedx Talks and The Sundance Film Festival.

EXEC MOVES

Multi platform music network Vevo named Jonathan Carson as the its Chief Revenue Officer. Carson previously headed Nielson’s digital division.

Yahoo has hired former AOL Networks Chief Ned Brody as the new Senior Vice President and head of the Americas. Brody will lead Yahoo’s advertising business in North and South America.

MOBILE ADVERTISING

Heineken’s going Instagram in a new photo scavenger hunt campaign, called Crack the US Open. The beer brand is offering a chance to win two tickets to the Men’s US Open Final to the Instagram user able to connect clues found on different photos featured on the Instagram handle @Crack_the_US_Open.

TECHNOLOGY

Google’s calling its next Android 4.4 operating system the KitKat after the Nestle candy. Google Senior Vice President Sundar Pichai revealed the new platform by sharing a photo of a KitKat Android statue in front of Google’s headquarters, and explained that the decision to name the new OS after a candy bar is because it’s “one of our favorite treats.” Nestle and Google are celebrating the partnership by supplying 50 million Android KitKat bars to 19 countries.

The long-awaited Xbox One will make its official debut in 13 countries on November 22, one week after Sony’s Play Station 4 release a week earlier.

IFA Berlin unveiled many new gadgets on Wednesday. Two of the coolest:

  • Samsung’s game changer Galaxy Gear smart watch. It features a camera, a speaker, two microphones, and the ability to make phone calls through Bluetooth. The watch can also play back music, send notifications, and yes, even tell time in a variety of interface styles.
  • Sony’s new smartphone Xperia Z1. Its camera will include quick sharing and editing tools.

Smartphone, smartwatch… smartcar? It’s looking like that’s what will be the next frontier for the “smart” phenomenon. Ford is the first to incorporate an app system that mimics a smartphone directly into one of its cars. Called Ford SYNC AppLink, the system is already loaded with apps including AskWiki, CitySearch, Hotels.com and Spotify. Ford says that drivers can control music, audio books, and even reserve hotels without their hands leaving the wheel. Ford SYNC AppLink will appear first in the Ford EcoSport SUV in Europe.
