Cyn opsis: DIGITAL

09/04/08

Good morning, it’s Thursday, September 4, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

The times they are a changin’. Political activists are utilizing web 2.0 techniques to get their voices heard, posting videos and stories documenting clashes between St. Paul police and RNC protestors. Groups such as online citizen journalist cooperative The Uptake are streaming raw and editing live feeds of violent clashes in which police launch tear gas grenades into the crowd. Protestors just arriving to the scene are turning to Twitter to coordinate marches. Meanwhile DemocracyNow.org has issued a call to action to its viewers to help convince the Ramsey County Attorney office to drop charges against journalists who have been arrested during the protests, including DemocracyNow’s own host Amy Goodman.

Amazon‘s digital video business turned a corner yesterday. The company announced that its Unbox service has been renamed Amazon Video on Demand and that purchased and rented videos are now viewable on Macs and broadband-connected Sony Bravia televisions, in addition to PCs and PC-linked Tivo DVRs. Amazon’s 40,000+ movies and TV shows are also viewable via the Windows Media Center extender on devices such as the Xbox 360.

Comcast‘s Fancast expanded upon its Hulu-powered video streaming service and introduced its own video download store currently limited to Windows users. The Fancast Store allows you to rent or purchase a range of movies and TV shows, although the initial selection pales in comparison to Amazon’s offering. (After all, you wouldn’t want to exceed your bandwidth limit.)

Here’s an update on where Major League Baseball is at in terms of live local streaming. Apparently talks between Comcast and MLB to test free local streaming of Cubs and White Sox games in Chicago fell apart over the issue of whose site get to host the games, control the user experience and benefit from the traffic, according to Sports Business Journal. MLB will try to revive efforts to strike a deal for the 2009 season.

Paramount Pictures Digital Entertainment acquired Seattle-based Screenlife LLC., maker of the multiplatform movie trivia game Scene It?. Screenlife has sold around 15 million copies on DVD, mobile, video on demand and consoles since its launch in 2002.

iTunes is proving to be a popular place to catch up on (officially sanctioned) RNC speeches; the free RNC podcast offerings are currently the top subscribed podcast, followed by a selection of free podcasts from HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher.

eBay is adding a retail component to its new positive social change-themed community site WorldofGood.com (a joint venture with fair-trade company World of Good) with a new socially aware shopping outlet. Items from WorldofGood, which pop up in eBay searches, fall into 4 categories in terms of how their sale benefits the world. There are “Goodprint” seals of approval for people, the environment, animals or specialized causes. All products sold on the site are verified by third parties – dubbed Trust Providers – to meet core ethical and environmental standards.

Video entertainment site Dailymotion is curating a program designed to aggregate programming for the XO Laptop – the low cost, low-power easy to use PC that went into mass production in late 2007 for distribution to third world countries. The partnership will enable the One Laptop Per Child program to benefit from Dailymotion’s infrastructure, content management and user account systems to let children create and distribute videos using the video camera that comes standard in the XO model.

Call for Submissions: WeMedia.com is looking for nominations for its Game Changers Awards – people, products and services that lead change and inspire a better world through media. Nominees will be screened by the We Media staff, a panel of judges will select finalists and users will choose the winners this fall. The deadline to submit in Sept. 15.

Now that NDS parent company News Corp. is out of the picture, Tivo has found its way back in the good graces of DirecTV and is planning to release an MPEG-4 compatible HD DVR for the service during the second half of 2009. Expect it to support all the latest Tivo advances including Swivel Search and Tivocast streaming content. DirecTV’s original Tivo-powered DVRs released in 2004 helped Tivo reach a critical mass of subscribers at a time when DVR’s were having trouble establishing themselves beyond the early adopter crowd.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

AT&T Wireless says it has fixed the problem to its wireless network that left many iPhone users in the Northeast without data service yesterday. The company identified the problem as a “routing issue.” The outage renewed complaints in the blogosphere nationwide that coverage for the AT&T 3G network-powered iPhone has been spotty at best.

Gannett
acquired an additional 10% stake in CareerBuilder.com from Tribune for $135 million giving it a controlling 50.8% in the site. Tribune, which has been selling assets to help pay down debt, now owns 30.8% of the company; The McClatchy Company continues to own 14.4%; and Microsoft Corp. retains 4%.

Publicis Groupe acquired Seattle-based digital marketing agency PBJS for an undisclosed amount. The firm specializes in multichannel, multiplatform campaigns and events involving webcasting, interactive media and branded entertainment. PBJS will continue to be managed by its founder and CEO Bob Bejan, who will now report to John Farrell, President & CEO of SAMS.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Who says technology is dehumanizing?  A new survey of 1,000 DVR users from NDS finds that nearly 80% of couples with DVRs report the device has improved their relationship. The gizmo ranked as the third most indispensable household item with 62% of the vote after the washing machine (97%) and the microwave (86%.) Another 81% of respondents with families said the DVR has improved family life – allowing for more time to eat dinner together, fewer arguments over what to watch and more family time around the television. (I see a new ad campaign brewing for Tivo …)

Mobile publishing and ad solution provider Crisp Wireless released its latest usage report outlining mobile web usage patterns in the U.S. Mobile web usage was up 29.4% overall vs Q1 of 2008 while mobile search traffic increased 25.8%. Entertainment and politics remained the most popular search categories (“Movies/Movie Listings” was the top searched term, followed by “Barack Obama.”) The following trends also emerged according to Crisp Wireless analysis:

  • Local news is viewed mostly in the a.m., while national news is viewed throughout the day
  • Sports fans check scores and highlights during their favorite games, with highest traffic on evenings and weekends
  • Women visit the mobile web late at night and early in the week – mirroring their online habits. Young girls are browsing late at night, especially on the weekend
  • Entertainment and online services are accessed most often in the evenings

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Bob Dykes
has left the CEO post of embattled contextual ad firm NebuAd to become CFO of online payment services company VeriFone.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

WEbook is a community-based publisher and crowdsourcing tool for authors who want to flesh out a new concept or develop a literary property designed for digital distribution. WEbook incubates projects by getting community members to submit, comment on and rate written works. The best of the best will be published into both hard copy and digital formats, splitting the proceeds 50/50 with the author(s) of the work. The site received a good bit of attention when it launched last April. (WEbook published a thriller named Pandora right out of the gate as sort of a test case, written by a total of 17 authors who used the site’s tools to collaborate.) The company has learned much in the six months since its launch, according to President Susan Heilbronner, a former DOJ prosecutor and Discovery Communications executive. WEbook has become more valued for its ability to provide feedback to writers who are stuck or who need to know what’s working and what’s not, she says. It provides community support and wisdom to budding talents who may not be lucky enough to have an “in” to the publishing world. Clearly distribution of its creative properties will determine the site’s success. The social networking movement and the proliferation of smartphones and handheld digital devices like Amazon’s Kindle could position WEbook to be a place where authors can turn to publish shorter form works such as essays or short stories. In fact an essay collection entitled “101 Things Every Guy Should Know How To Do,” is one of WEBook’s next scheduled releases (slated to come out around Valentine’s Day). The plan is to deliver “micropacks” of essays from the book over digital devices to build awareness for the how-to guide.
