Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 30, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Tuesday was another strong example how you can’t predict demo numbers based on the success – or lack thereof – in household ratings success.  While CBS clearly led the night in HH numbers, ABC and NBC tied the demo lead, while CBS ranked third behind Fox.  ABC and NBC each delivered a 3.9/10, Fox 2.9/8, CBS 2.7/7,  WB 2.4/6, and UPN 1.1/3 according to Nielsen Media Research.
At 8p Fox’s second part of Trading Spouses led among A18-49 with a 3.5/10. CBS and ABC tied at #2 with a 3.2/9, while WB’s Gilmore Girls was a notion ahead of NBC’s Last Comic Standing (2.6/7 vs. 2.5/7). With that said, Gilmore Girls led the W18-34 category with a 5.0/15, followed by Fox with a 12 share.
At 9pm ABC was in front with According to Jim and freshman series Rodney.  Jim delivered a very healthy 4.7/12, and newbie Rodney held 83% of that share lead-in, posting a 3.9/10, tied in share with Scrubs on NBC. Father of the Pride at 9p earned NBC a 3.5/9.  Clubhouse on CBS led the hour in HH rtgs, but ultimately ranked third in the demo with 2.6/6, tying in share with Fox’s Next Great Champ (2.3/6). WB’s One Tree Hill scored a 2.1/5, though improved in the Teen demo with a 41/13.  And UPN’s Veronica Mars struggled in the A18-49 demo (1.1/3), but did much better among W18-34 with a 1.7/5.
At 10p NBC was a knockdown winner with Law & Order: SVU’s 5.5/14, well ahead of NYPD Blue’s 3.6/9 and Judging Amy’s 2.5/7.

Tonight’s Premieres: 2004 Presidential Debate #1 at 9pm

The campaigns representing the two Presidential candidates in this evening’s debate have asked the networks abide by a handful of rules in their coverage of the debate.  Those rules include keeping the camera on the candidate answering the question and not cutting away for reaction shots from the other candidate or from the audience. Tonight’s pool camera feed will be supplied by Fox, who has said they will shoot the debate as they see fit, a stance none of the other networks carrying the pool feed – ABC, CBS, NBC and CNN – have disagreed with.  There is also a lengthy agreement for the debate moderators to sign which dictates their conduct during the debates.  All four moderators, Charles Gibson-ABC, Bob Schieffer-CBS, Jim Lehrer- PBS and Gwen Ifill-PBS, have refused to sign the agreement.

The first pick up of the season goes to The WB who has ordered up a full season of Jack & Bobby, its freshman series which launched just a couple of weeks ago, airing on Sunday nights at 9pm.  While the show has performed decently in the ratings, according to Nielsen Media Research it also over indexes in several key qualitative categories including HH Income of 100k+ (143 index).

Casting / Development / Production:

  • Here’s a talk show host that did not come up in your suggestions last week – Tyra Banks is getting her shot with Telepictures Prods to have her own multi-topic daytime talk show. Telepictures is looking at 2005 launch and is expected to draw in a younger female crowd.
  • Showtime is looking at a new drama series from the creators of Party of Five and Sisters, Chris Keyser and Amy Lippman. This one centers around a man who learns he is dying, and has about five years to live, according to Hollywood Reporter.
  • WB is looking at Toni Braxton for a comedy series next season, based on Braxton’s life (with creative license) and will include some of her own family members.  20th will produce. 
  • A lot of chatter last development season about The Men’s Room for NBC, which have the show a 13 episode commitment.  Well, after shooting the sixth episode, NBC has chosen not to continue. The six eps will likely air midseason this year, and production could potential pick up again depending on the reaction.
  • Fox has given a script commitment to a project called Kitchen Confidential from Darren Star (Sex and the City), based on the book by Anthony Bourdain, and produced by New Line TV / 20th / Darren Star Prods.  The premise is restaurant life from the POV of the chef and kitchen staff, per Hollywood Reporter.
  • WB has ordered a pilot from producer McG about four 20-somethings living in San Francisco. The project comes from Warner Bros. TV and Wonderland Sound and Vision. 

Spike TV has just completed shooting a new reality series, unbeknownst to the people in it.  Here’s the deal -William Shatner and film crew arrive at a small town in Iowa, telling the less than 1000 population they are shooting a science fiction movie, written by and starring Shatner called Invasion Iowa.  Many of the locals were hired to become involved in the production of the movie.  For his part, Shatner played himself times ten – a sort of Hollywood ego nightmare of himself.  After ten days of shooting, Shatner announced to the town the movie was a hoax, and they were all just part of the filming of a new reality show slated to air on Spike TV in early 2005. Peter Funt would be pleased.

Outdoor Life Network will launch a new reality series on October 2 at 930p called Cowboy 101. The show follows the days and nights of 13 cowboys/cowgirls as they work their way through Sul Ross State University, aka rodeo school. OLN has scheduled 13 episodes which will involve bull riding, bronc riders and bulldoggers (no, I have no idea what a bulldogger is or does).

After a two year long up-close-and-personal look at the performance of all theatrical movies on basic cable television, Warner Bros. Media Research, Eric Frankel, President/WB Domestic Cable Distribution, announced to the press during a telephone conference yesterday the results of that study. Some of that study is obvious – and sounds more like a sales pitch than a research study (promotional platform, built-in branding, etc.).  The less obvious points are a little more interesting, such as how theatrical movies on basic cable can hold up over time, even build an audience with repeated airings.  For instance – The Water Boy aired 22 times on USA, and averaged a rating that was 44% higher than the net’s average primetime fare. Pretty Woman and American President results you already know – these films get an audience no matter when or where they air. Strong box office films have also been successfully used by cable nets as lead-ins to new programming or original episodes of original programming, including The Shield, Monk and Dead Zone.  And what may be considered as smaller films – not the big box office blockbusters – can also deliver.  For instance, Whale Rider aired on Oxygen and more viewers tuned in to see it than any other program or event in the network’s history. And according to the research, theatricals films can build an audience over several airings, and have a wide overall demographic appeal.  For more complete information, give Eric a holler.

CASTING NOTE:  For those of you who think you’re looking a little older than you should given your limited age, this may be for you. TLC’s Ten Years Younger (Evolution Film & Tape) is looking for able bodied, LA based, 21 and up, US citizen, and looking-older-than-they-shoulds to participate in a makeover, which they say will make you look ten years younger.  What’s to think about? Ken Wilke has been upped to SVP/TV Stations and Cable Technology for NBC Universal, effective immediately. The announcement was made today by Jay Ireland, President of the NBC Universal Television Stations, and John Wallace, EVP of NBC Universal’s Broadcast and Network Operations.  Ken adds engineering and operating responsibilities for the NBC Universal Television Stations Division to his current duties where he oversees the engineering, operations and technology issues for NBC Universal’s six cable networks.  He reports to both Ireland and Wallace.

Ginger Shorrock and Edward Bonanno have been named Account Directors for the Northern Region of Discovery Networks, U.S. Affiliate Sales and Marketing division.  Ginger is responsible for managing Discovery’s affiliate sales and marketing efforts in Indiana, Pennsylvania and Northern Virginia; Edward manages the New England and Ohio territories.

Dan Martinsen has been upped to EVP/Corporate Communications for Viacom networks Nickelodeon and Nick at Nite, TV Land, Noggin/The N, and  Spike TV.  Adding to his responsibilities are consumer products division and Nick’s feature film division.
