Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 2, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

US-based Hispanic broadcaster Vme launches Vme Kids, a new US channel specifically targeted to preschoolers, for whom Spanish is their home language, and their families.  The new 24/7 channel launches on AT&T U-verse, with further carriage deals in the works, featuring a programming lineup including Dibo (the Dinosaur), Los Difraces de Dougie (Dougie in Disguise), Los Supernumeros (Numberjacks), Bruno y los amigos Banana (Bruno & the Banana Bunch) and Cinco Minutos Mas (Five Minutes More), LazyTown, Jim de la Luna, Musti, 7 Pets, Pororo and Connie la Vaquita (Connie the Cow), among others.  Vme is supporting its carriage partners with local marketing events including book tours with its sister company, Santillana USA and a LazyTown Live! school tour.  The new preschool channel will feature programs and interstitials designed to help kids use their Spanish language skills and vocabulary in English, as well as providing parents with activities to reinforce what their kids are learning on screen.  Vme will continue to offer its daily kid-targeted programming block on the Vme network.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Canada’s Skywriter Media & Entertainment Group and Brazil’s Mixer are teaming up to develop the new interactive preschool animated series, Vivi, for TVO (Canada).  The series will feature a mix of 2D cut-out animation and live-action.  Vivi follows the travels of an artistic girl, Vivi, and her grandmother, during which Vivi creates interesting souvenirs and scrapbook from the various cultures and locations she visits.  Mixer will produce the animation, while Skywriter designs the interactive online component for the property.  Vivi has received funding from the Brazilian program, AnimaTV, which aims to stimulate animation development in Brazil.

Dwayne Johnson will star in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, New Line’s sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D (2008), per Heat Vision.  Directed by Brad Peyton, the sequel, which will also be in 3D, will again feature Josh Hutcherson as explorer Sean Anderson and is loosely based on Jules Verne’s book Mysterious Island.  Brendan Fraser, who starred in the first movie, will not return for the second due to scheduling conflicts, according to the report.  Contrafilm’s Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson are producing, along with Charlotte Huggins.  Walden Media’s Michael Bostick and Evan Turner are executive producing.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Playhouse Disney‘s Handy Manny animated series heads to the big city and primetime when the new special, Handy Manny Big Construction Job, premieres as part of Hispanic Heritage Month on Monday, October 11 at 7-7:55p on Disney Channel.  Additionally, Wilmer Valderrama (the voice of Handy Manny) and Maria Canals-Barrera (Wizards of Waverly Place, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam) will host interstitials focusing on Hispanic traditions that will air daily September 15 – October 15 on Disney Channel.  To support the special, a full-length preview will be available from Monday, October 4 on Disney Channel On Demand.  The special will also have a simulcast via mobile providers Sprint TV, FloTV and MobiTV in conjunction with the TV premiere, and beginning October 12, it will be available on mobile VOD to AT&T CV, Spring TV and Verizon V Cast customers.  Additionally, the special will be available via iTunes and Xbox Live on November 16, simultaneous to its release on DVD by Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment.  Finally, ahead of the premiere, PlayhouseDisney.com ( www.playhousedisney.com ) will launch Manny’s Big Crane Game, and various activities.

Nicktoons and the National Football League (NFL) announces support plans and further list of NFL players, coaches and related personalities who will voice their animated likeness in the recently announced animated short-form series, Rush Zone: Guardians of the Core (22×5), which is set to premiere on the network this coming Monday, September 6 at 8p.  Based on the NFLRUSH Zone ( www.nflrz.nflrush.com ), the original series revolves around 10-year-old Ishmael, an average kid with new found powers, who must protect the world by saving the positive life force that has been split into pieces, and scattered in all the NFL stadiums, from the evildoer Sudden Death. The series will air regularly on Mondays at 8p during the NFL season, culminating with an hour-long movie (comprised of the first 21 episodes and the premiere of the final episode) on Saturday, February 5, the day before Super Bowl XLV.  The series will feature NFL game footage, and will be available on NFL Network, Nicktoons.com ( www.nicktoons.com ) and NFLRUSH.com ( www.nflrush.com ), following its premiere on Nicktoons.  The series is produced in HD for use on Jumbotrons in NFL stadiums across the country.  To support the series, on September 6, Nicktoons will launch a show website, Nicktoons.com/RushZone ( www.nicktoons.com/rushzone), which will feature episodes, message board, flipbook and information about the program.  A new game of the month will also let players enter a new code from each week’s episode to unlock a virtual prize.  Additionally, NFLRush.com will launch a show page.

  • In addition to the previously announced NFL’s Eli Manny (NY Giants) and Sean Payton (New Orleans Saints coach), the series will feature appearances by Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), Brian Dawkins (Denver Broncos), Steven Jackson (St. Louis Rams), Calvin Johnson (Detroit Lions), Norv Turner (San Diego Chargers coach), Hall of Famer Marcus Allen (LA Raiders/Kansas City Chiefs) and NFL personalities Shannon Sharpe (legendary Pro Bowl tight end and NFL commentator) and Bob Papa (NFL Network, NY Giants sportscaster).

Glee star Jane Lynch will make a guest-star appearance on an episode of iCarly.  Lynch will play Sam’s previously un-seen eccentric mom on the episode, iSam’s Mom, which premieres Saturday, September 11 at 8p on Nickelodeon.  iSam’s Mom will be available via Nick on Demand in October.

CBeebies is set to premiere a new series and second season of another series in the US Hispanic market this month.  CBeebies will launch the new preschool HD CGI animated series, Everything’s Rosie (El Mundo de Rosie) on September 6, followed by the debut of the new season of the preschool series Garth & Bev (El Mundo Magico de Garth y Bev) on September 20.

The 10th anniversary season of Between the Lions will premiere Monday, September 20, on PBS Kids (check local listings).  The new season of preschool literacy skills-centric series is comprised of 10 new episodes, including the all animated premiere of an episode entitled, Three More Little Pigs & The Ants and the Grasshopper, as well as an episode featuring comedian Rachel Dratch entitled City Mouse and Country Mouse & The Happy Hocky Family Moves to the Country!  The series web page, PBSKids.org/lions ( www.pbskids.org/lions ), debuts new activities such as helping Arty Smartypants march alliterative words or rhyming word.  Additionally, this November will mark the launch of the first Between the Lions iPhone app, Monkey Match, based on the web version of the game.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cookie Jar Entertainment and its preschool animated series Richard Scarry’s Busytown Mysteries teams with AAA to educated parents/caregivers and kids about car seat/booster and seat belt safety.  The car safety initiative includes a new 30-second public service announcement (PSA), featuring Busytown Mysteries characters and AAA’s kid passenger messaging, which will debut on Saturday, September 11 during the CBS Saturday morning kid-centric programming block and on ThisTV digital network.  Later this fall, AAA’s 2011 TourBook travel guides and online TripTik Travel Planner will introduce special print and digital ads featuring Scarry’s Lowly Worm, Sally Cat and Huckle Cat characters along with AAA safety tips.  The campaign will also include messaging opportunities via kid/parent-targeted portal Jaroo.com ( www.jaroo.com ), BusytownMysteries.com ( www.busytownmysteries.com), and inserts in consumer products.  Additionally, AAA will feature Busytown Mysteries characters in its 2010 Halloween Safety and 2011 Schools Open-Drive Carefully efforts, as well as running ads in the AAA’s member magazines.  Cookie Jar Entertainment programs the Cookie Jar TV block on CBS TV.
