09/28/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 28, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Joining the NBC schedule on Friday, October 13 is a new game show, 1 vs. 100 from Endemol USA, with host Bob Saget. The limited series – will air for just five weeks – will debut on a Friday night at 9p following a Deal or No Deal lead-in.  Thereafter, it will air on Fridays at 8p for four more weeks, pushing back the debut of Crossing Jordan to later on in the season.  Based on the UK series, the game is trivia based, with one contestant going up against 100 others in the hope of winning a million bucks.

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC:  Ugly Betty at 8p
CW:  Smallville at 8p, Supernatural at 9p
Spike TV:  TNA: Impact! at 11p

Tonight’s Finale:
Fox:  Celebrity Duets at 9p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Comedy Central has ordered up a 3rd season of The Showbiz Show with David Spade, with an order for 13 new episodes.

MTV has ordered a second season of it’s documentary/reality series Two-A-Days, centered at an Alabama high school, Hoover High, and its top ranked football team. The show will likely return with season #2 next summer, but in the meantime the finale of Season #1 is scheduled to air October 11. And renewed for MTV2 for a third season is The Andy Milonakis Show, produced by Jackhole Industries. The upcoming season of six episodes finds Milonakis has moved from his NYC apartment to Hollywood.

TV Land has acquired the exclusive primetime and overnight rights to air all 255 episodes of the classic hit comedy M*A*S*H. Distributed by Twentieth Television, M*A*S*H will begin airing on TV Land next January with a week-long primetime/overnight programming marathon starting January 1, 2007.

Saturday Night Live will launch for the first time in Russia and Poland.  Will these newest launches, this will bring the comedy series into a total of 113 countries. In addition, renewed distribution deals for telecasts of the series have been finalized for South Korea and Holland. The package of programs licensed to the new territories includes recent seasons as well as classic Saturday Night Live episodes from the series’ 30-year U.S. run.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

Cablevision will begin selling various NBC primetime series commercial free on a VOD basis, at $.95 apiece.  Once the program is downloaded, it is available to the Cablevision: iO customer for a period for 24 hours. The shows will all be available to subscribers the day after their original primetime airing.  NBC series included in the deal as of right now are Law & Order: SVU, Law & Order: CI and The Office; while Friday Night Lights will be added on October 3rd and Las Vegas on October 20th.

Mobile ESPN is hanging up.  The cellphone service is less than a year old, having launched during the Super Bowl last January, provided sports-related content and features on its phones.  The plan apparently is to get out of the hardware portion of the industry, and focus on the software or content portion, potentially looking to other cellphone service companies as an outlet to its sports content.  While ESPN Mobile was backed by the Walt Disney Co., its shuttering will have nothing to do with the future ongoing efforts of Disney Mobile.

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

ABC has three new projects in development — all in the crime/adventure genre, per Variety

  • Women’s Murder Club, based on the James Patterson book of the same title, is about four women who track and capture murderers.  From Twentieth Century Fox TV, and exec producer/director Brett Ratner, this project comes with a pilot penalty attached.
  • Murder Incorporated is about a man from a wealthy family, who discovers where all that wealth came from. This project is from Touchstone Television and and Frank Spotnitz.
  • And a script has been ordered for Killing Sam Carter from Fox Studios and Fuse Ent., about a guy who is suffering from amnesia, and to complicate his life just a little bit more, is also a time traveler.

The CW has a new project under consideration – a pilot script has been ordered for Reaper is about a worker-bee for Satan who runs around reclaiming the souls that managed to escape from Hell, also per Variety.  This project is set at Touchstone Television and Mark Gordon Co, with writers/exec producers Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters.

Signed to host the new season of USA Network‘s Nashville Star is Jewel.  Produced by Reveille, the show returns to the schedule on January 11 at 10p.  Jewel will be joined by returning co-host Cowboy Troy. Casting is underway, and if you think you’re the next big country singer, you may what to check out the audition dates: http://www.usanetwork.com/nashvillestar/.

David Spade has more to celebrate beyond his Comedy Central series getting picked up for another season – he will join the cast of CBS‘ midseason comedy Rules of Engagement, from Sony Pictures Television and Happy Madison Prods.

Lifetime has a new project in development – Conspiracy is a legal thriller about a young Washington-based lawyer who wins a huge and highly publicized case, and later realizes her client was in fact guilty. Trying to right that wrong, she puts herself in harm’s way, while learning her client was just the beginning of a much bigger story. The project is from producer Gary Randall.

Three Moons Over Milford which has completed its first season on ABC Family, will not be picked up for a second season, per Variety. The show premiered with a very modest 1.6 million total viewers, and headed south after that.
