Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09.26.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 26, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Twitter added a recommendations feature that is meant to help users stay up-to-date on the most popular tweets, new tweeters as well as a follower’s most retweeted posts. The recommendation will be sent to users through pushed notifications that can be switched to an on or off mode on mobile devices.

TV4Entertainment launched its latest documentary channel on Hulu called DocComTV. The channel currently offers seven documentaries licensed through TV4.

Netflix created a Breaking Bad spoiler filter for Twitter called The Spoiler Foiler. The show’s fans can log into their twitter via www.spoilerfoiler.com, and the filter will hide any tweets with key words about Breaking Bad. The campaign runs until Oct. 4.

Adult Swim programming can now be streamed online at www.adultswim.com and on the Adult Swim apps. Programming can be viewed through these platforms after signing in with a cable provider.

Gotham’s anti-hero Batman is the theme of YouTube channel CineFix’s latest month of original programming. The content will include spoofs, countdown lists and streaming of the newest Batman trilogy. Batman was voted the most popular superhero of YouTube with more than three billion views in August.

Esquire.com is pinning its way to the top with Pinterest, by creating pins that preview Esquire articles to further entice readers to click-through to the entire article. The new pins will display snippets from an article and its overall subject matter as a way to bring more traffic to text-heavy articles.

CONTENT MEDIA

ABC launched online videos of the behind-the-scenes action from its anticipated fall show Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The videos will be featured on ABC.com, Marvel.com and the WatchABC site and app.

The network also debuted the second season of its documentary web series On The Record based on television show Nashville yesterday. The show is available on ABC.com/MusicLounge and iTunes.

YouTube rolled out a new comment moderation filter as a way to keep the trolls out and the constructive and communal conversation in. The new system allows users to block commenters if necessary and ban specific keywords in comments. The video service is also bringing Google+ into the mix to take moderation one step further, by putting comments made from user’s circles at the top of a feed. In other words: Gawker also made a move to better manage comments with the tool Kinja earlier this week. More sites are introducing new moderation tools, because the nasty remarks are pushing away user engagement in general, Gigaom reported.

Networks (both Cable & Broadcast) are faced with eroding ratings and ad dollars shifting from TV to Digital. That’s why Cynopsis is presenting a conference on what networks are doing  and what they need to do more of  to aggressively evolve to compete, and profit in this shifting landscape. Join us as our experts share the latest business and advertising models for success at the Cynopsis Future TV Summit!

APPS + MOBILE GAMING

Rovio of Angry Birds announced at Advertising Week yesterday that its mobile channel ToonsTV has reached one billion views within seven months since its launch. The company says it’s producing the second season of Angry Birds Toons and much more original content to be available in the next year.

ADVERTISING

A Bright Roll Video Summit panel with ComScore Chairman and Co-Founder Gian Fulgoni and Kellogg’s executives discussed the future of multiplatform campaigns and viewability solutions yesterday. Fulgoni recommended impressions should be bought for multiple platforms to get the largest reach of an audience. The panel also concluded that video ads on average have a 46 percent viewability rate, and ROI success is based on longer viewability rather than just expanding viewability of videos across linear platforms.

“If you’re focused just on mobile, then you are already focused on a problem of the past.” Google’s VP of Digital Strategy Neal Mohan expressed this about the future of digital video advertising at the Bright Roll Video Summit with Advertising Week yesterday. Mohan said Google is approaching the problem by realizing that video advertising won’t only go mobile in the future, but also on many screens in every aspect of life. Google is taking on video advertising not just through content and strategy, but chiefly through measurement solutions like technological innovations to help:

  • Viewability, and if a person actually viewed the ad.
  • Effective metrics, and if the right person saw the ad and how to measure its ability to change a perception of a product or service. Mohan believes the ability to provide real-time feedback to marketers is a $200 billion opportunity for the industry.

Digital health site SparkPeople’s CEO and founder Chris Downie will speak at Advertising Week today about how mobile applications are key to helping people lead healthier lives. The mobile app and site uses videos, articles and a community board to help members reach their nutrition and weight goals. SparkPeople’s app has had more than five million downloads, and its Pinterest page has had a million visitors since it’s creation. Downie told Cynopsis that the company will continue to focus on the mobile platform with the site.

TECHNOLOGY

Amazon released its latest Kindle Fire tablets with a redesigned Kindle Fire HD and the new Kindle Fire HDX. The seven-inch HDX tablet has better graphics, a front-end camera and the updated HD will be sold in multiple colors. Other features include the ability to watch select Amazon Instant videos while offline and the new app Mayday, which is a 24/7 tech support app for Kindle HDX owners.

Samsung wants a share of Apple’s pot of gold with today’s announcement that the Galaxy S4 will come in a gold model. The display on the gold smartphones will also have the choice of a brown and pink color. In other words: The record breaking sales of iPhone 5s gold model obviously made a serious impression on Samsung.

Call for Submissions: Cynopsis is producing a Halloween Programming Guide which comes out on October 17 and will be sent to all Cynopsis and Cynopsis Kids subscribers. If your network has a Halloween-themed programming, please send your listings to Cathy Applefeld Olson at [email protected] no later than Friday Oct 4. Please include the following information: type of program (i.e. series, special, documentary, movie or holiday-themed episode), title, dates and times of all airings (please indicate when the show first premieres and when subsequent encores will air). Cathy will send you a confirmation email following each submission (if you don’t receive a confirmation email, please resubmit).

EXEC MOVES

Advertising tech agency ChoiceStream added Mike Sheehan to its board of directors. Sheehan is currently the Chairman of marketing agency Hill Holiday.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

Hashtags are all the rage in not only marketing campaigns, but seemingly in conversation now, too. But, is there officially a problem in our Twitter and Instagram culture with too many hashtags? A new comedy sketch produced by Late Night with Jimmy Fallon starring the duo Justin Timberlake and Jimmy Fallon, shows how the use of hashtags has grown a bit extreme. Hashtag #funny. Watch the video at www.cynopsis.com.
