YTV (Canada) picks up Heroic Film Company’s new tween-targeted live-action comedy, How to be Indie. Slated to begin production this fall, How to be Indie will debut on YTV in fall 2009. Created by writer Vera Santamaria (Little Mosque on the Prairie, Degrassi: The Next Generation, Instant Star etc.) and Heroic executive producers John May and Suzanne Bolch, How to be Indie revolves around Indie, a 13-year-old girl who must juggle her immigrant family’s South Asian traditions and her Canadian lifestyle, not to mention being a teen. Decode Enterprises will handle international distribution for the series.
Fresh off of directing Disney’s remake of Race to Witch Mountain, the studio inks a first-look deal with Andy Fickman to develop/direct/produce family-targeted movies under his newly launched Ooops Doughnuts Productions, per Variety. Fickman’s first movie as part of the deal is expected to be Pool Rats, about a local swim team, which is based on a script he co-wrote with Kathryn Price and Nicole Millard. Fickman will hang his new shingle on the Disney lot with his producing partner Betsy Sullenger. Sullenger will also serve as Ooops Doughnuts’ head of development.
John Lasseter announced today that Disney/Pixar are revving up their engines to shift the release of Cars 2, the animated sequel to Cars (2006), to summer 2011 rather than the previously projected 2012, per MTV.com. Lasseter also announced that the new Disney Channel animated shorts Car Toons, which will feature stories told by the Cars character Mater, will run on-air, online and ahead of Disney movies over the next few years.
Additionally, at the same Disney event it was revealed that Oprah Winfrey is lending her voice to Eudora, the mother of Princess Tiana, in Disney/Pixar’s animated feature film The Princess and the Frog. Set for release in late 2009, the movie is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans and stars Anika Noni Rose as Tiana.
Billy Crystal joins the cast of Fox’s upcoming live-action family comedy movie Tooth Fairy, according to Variety. Directed by Michael Lembeck, Tooth Fairy is set to begin shooting in Vancouver this month, the cast already includes Dwayne Johnson, Ashley Judd, Julie Andrews, Stephen Merchant and Ryan Sheckler.

SpongeBob SquarePants gets a little underwater amnesia in the new half-hour special WhoBob WhatPants?, premiering Monday, October 13 at 8p on Nickelodeon. In the special SpongeBob becomes an unwitting hero when he meets up with the leader of the dangerous Bubble Poppin’ Boys, voiced by Ray Liotta (Goodfellas, Field of Dreams and a million other movies). The special bows at the end of a four-hour SpongeBob Marathon (4-8p). The special will be supported by a new game of the week, SpongeBob SquarePants: WhoBob WhatPants? that launches October 2. TurboNick will feature a playlist of content supporting the special including a sneak peek, themed episodes, song clips from October 3, and an instant replay of the special following its premiere on Nick. Additionally, the WhoBob WhatPants? DVD will be released on Tuesday, October 14, which includes five episodes from season five and four original animated shorts.
Discovery Kids premieres the animated series Willa’s Wild Life on Saturday, November 1 at 5:30p. Willa’s Wild Life follows the adventures of 6-yr-old Willa who adopts all sorts of animals that she speaks with, the animals in turn offer her advice on every day issues.
The series is based on An Octopus Followed Me Home, a book by author Dan Yaccarino, who is also known as the author/creator of Oswald. Other Q4 2008 premieres include season two of Bindi The Jungle Girl on September 27 at 5p, and Tutenstein: The Movie, which bows on October 11 at 6p.
Phineas and Ferb celebrate Halloween in two new episodes debuting on Disney Channel on Friday, October 3 at 8:30p and Friday October 17 at 8:30p.
Nerd Corps continues on its plan for world domination with new broadcast deals for its 3D animated series The League of Super Evil (26×30, each episode 2×11 and a series of 30-second interstitials). Picking up the series for broadcast in 2009 are Jetix in Latin America and Canal +, Canal J and Gulli in France. Initial deals for the series include YTV (Canada) and CBBC (UK). Additionally, Nerd Corps has begun work on a The League of Super Evil (aka L.O.S.E.) massively multiplayer online collectible trading card game and fan site with funds provided by The Bell New Media Fund.
Teletoon (Canada) picks up more episodes of Fresh TV Inc.’s tween/teen targeted animated series Total Drama and Stoked. The third season of Total Drama will take on a new spin when Fresh TV adds a musical aspect to the series, hence the season two title Total Drama, the Musical. The first two seasons are Total Drama Island, and the yet to air Total Drama Action. Stoked is set to premiere on Teletoon in spring 2009 with the order now for 52 episodes (up from the original 26). An animated sitcom, Stoked revolves around six teens that spend their first summer away from home working and living together at Surfer’s Paradise Resort, in addition to working and getting along they get to surf on their days off.
Family Channel and Decode Entertainment will tape an episode of The Latest Buzz in front of a live studio audience, this is the first time a teen-targeted multi-camera series has done so in Canada. The episode, The Live From Teen Buzz Issue will tape on Friday, October 10, and will air on Family Channel as part of season 3 in 2009. Viewers who want to vie for a chance at a walk-on part for the episodes can enter online at www.family.ca until September 28. The second season of The Latest Buzz premieres on Friday, October 3 at 6:30p.
