Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 22, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Flying Bark Productions unveils plans to bring back the popular Australian Blinky Bill koala character in a new Blinky Bill 3D animated feature film, which is set to begin production this year. Helming the movie is Alex Weight, who was the lead animator on the animated movie Happy Feet, and Animation Supervisor on Legends of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole. Signing on as Line Producer is for the film is Marie-Cecile Dahan, who previously worked as Department manager on Avatar, series Line Producer on Animalia, and as VFX Production Manager on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and District 9. Flying Bark is no stranger Blinky Bill. In 1992, Yoram Gross Film Studios, which is now Flying Bark Productions, produced the Blinky Bill feature film based on the Australian classic book by Dorothy Wall.
Nickelodeon prepares for its 8th Annual Worldwide Day of Play (WWDOP) set for this Saturday, September 24, 2011, with the addition of a number of superstar athletes to the talent lineup for the network’s big celebration that will take place on the Ellipse in Washington, DC. Lending their support to the WWDOP and DC event are NBA stars LeBron James (Miami Heat), Carmelo Anthony (New York Knicks), Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets), Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat), Olympic gold medalist/pro soccer star Abby Wambach (magicJack), along with the casts of the network’s series iCarly, Big Time Rush and Victorious. The athletes and stars will also be featured in Worldwide Day of Play: Get Your Game On!, a half-hour special that will air on Nickelodeon that evening at 7:30p. As in previous years, Nickelodeon’s TV networks and websites will all go off-air and offline this Saturday, September 24, from 12p-3p, to encourage kids and families to get up and get active. Before going off-air at noon, the network’s stars will give viewers special on-location reports from Washington, DC, focusing on the activities and sharing tips on healthy and active lifestyles. In addition to the WWDOP DC event, where Nickelodeon’s 50 partner organizations will also take part, there are 4,000+ local WWDOP events taking place across the US, as well as in 20 other countries throughout the year, including Germany, France, India, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Scotland, Sweden and Tanzania.
iStoryTime‘s kid-targeted iOS storybook apps debut on Barnes & Noble‘s Nook Color. Three of the most popular iStoryTime app titles, Kung Fu Panda 2, How To Train Your Dragon and The Smurfs (US$2.99/each), are now available on Nook Color include. The Nook Color features a 7-inch touchscreen, built-in email, and an enhanced web experience.
Nickelodeon Consumer Products International inks a two-year, multi-territory license deal with Keen Joy Trade for rugs, doormats and bath mats featuring Nickelodeon’s live-action properties including Victorious, Big Time Rush, and iCarly, as well as classic animated properties SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer. The products are protected by the Oko-Tex seal, an international testing and certification system for textiles that restricts the use of some chemicals. The deal will see product available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Benelux.
AT New Media, licensing agent for the singing/dancing Gummy Bear ( www.gummibar.net ) property, and licensee Whitehouse Leisure launch a new Gummy Bear plush line based on the character at retail across Europe and also now available in the UK and Ireland. The plush is a 12-inch Gummy Bear toy sings The Gummy Bear Song when his tummy is pressed. Companies that have recently launched Gummy Bear promotional campaigns include Turkish telephone company BN Telecom, Greek food manufacturer Ifantis, and McDonald’s in Germany.
Garfield builds in China with recent TV deal, new licensing agent, and new and ongoing licensing and promotional partners. Garfield licensor Paws, Inc., named Hong Kong-based Medialink Limited as the new licensing agent in China for the property. A new look Garfield has been specially created for the Asian market, featuring softer and simpler lines to render Garfield, Odie and the other characters. The Garfield Show launched earlier this year in China on CCTV Channel 14. Additionally, Wuhan Jiang Toon Toys Co. debuted a new website, HappyGarfield.com ( www.happygarfield.com ), which is based on the CGI animated series, now in production on its third season. The Garfield Show is a production of Dargaud Ellipsanime, France 3, and Paws, Inc. A four-part special developed for The Garfield Show focuses on Garfield in China. When in China is an adventure story that takes place in many of China’s most famous places. Long-time licensees kids apparel company Beijing Paclantic Co., which has made product based on the feline star since 1998, with 110 stores continuing to carry the brand, Industrial Bank continues to issue Garfield credit cards, and Sky Unicorn has developed a new line of plush dolls. Other adult-aimed Garfield merchandise can be found in Baleno stores (adult apparel), 36 6ixty 8ight stores (women’s lingerie), and Garfield Coffee Cafes, which are operated by Beijing Jin Feng Cheng Xiang Food, in five locations in China.
In conjunction with The Hub‘s debut of season two of R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: The Series, Saturday, October 1 at 8p, the channel is also running a special Haunt Your House Sweepstakes. Running October 1-11, 2011, the Haunt Your House Sweepstakes ( www.hubworld.com/hauntedhouse ), where the grand prizewinner will get a Halloween home makeover. The house makeover will be featured on The Hub just before Halloween, during the Saturday, October 29 episode of the series. R.L. Stine’s The Haunting: The Series is produced for The Hub by Haunting Hour Productions. The series is executive produced by Dan Angel (The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It, Goosebumps, Young Blades and the TV movie Door to Door), Billy Brown (Body Bags, The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It, Goosebumps, Young Blades and Door to Door), Harvey Kahn (Beyond Sherwood Forest, Lost Treasure of The Grand Canyon) and Kim Arnott (Helen, The Art of War II: Betrayal”).
Disney XD gives the go ahead for a second season of it live action series Kickin’ It. Production on the new episodes is slated to begin in December 20111 for a 2012 premiere. Created and executive-produced by producer Jim O’Doherty (Grounded for Life, 3rdRock from the Sun), Kickin’ It is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions. Joey Scott (Growing Pains) serves as producer.
Portfolio Entertainment and Collingwood O’Hare Productions have begun production on the second season of the preschool series The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, bringing the series to a total of 60×30 episodes. Furthermore, lead broadcasters for the series PBS Kids (US) and Treehouse (Canada) have ordered a one-hour Christmas special based on the series, which is scheduled to air for holiday 2012. Singing on as a new broadcast partner for the series is CBC (Canada), which began airing the first season earlier this month. The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That! stars Martin Short as The Cat in the Hat.
Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior are ready to scare with new Halloween-themed episodes of a number of its series, which will feature guest stars and special performances beginning Friday, October 7 and then throughout the month. Programming for the month includes: includes: a new Phineas and Ferb episode featuring guest stars Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Michael J. Fox and Michael Douglas; Wizards of Waverly Place Apartment 13B a new four part story with a new episode debuting each Friday; China Anne McClain performs on mutA.N.T. Farm; dance team Instant Noodles appear on Shake It Up; while David DeLuise and Debbie Reynolds gust star in Kick Buttowski Suburban Daredevil; and a new holiday themed episode of Jake and the Never Land Pirates. Additionally, online from Friday, September 30 fans can get ready for Halloween with various online activities and Halloween-themed episodes on Disney’s respective channel websites. At DisneyChannel.com/Halloween ( www.disneychannel.com/halloween ) kids can build mazes with Monster Maze Mania, while on DisneyJunior.com/Halloween ( www.disneyjunior.com/halloween ) parents can upload photos of their kids in costume for the costume gallery, the site will also feature a sneak peek of the Imagination Movers Halloween episode from Friday, October 21, a week before its TV debut. Finally, beginning Tuesday, October 11 at DisneyXD.com ( www.disneyxd.com ), kids can assist the Wasabi Warriors fend off zombies in a new Kickin’ It game, and the following Friday, October 21, a new Halloween version of the Kick Buttowski’s Loco Launcho will debut with new levels.
Lawless Entertainment has been appointed as the worldwide co-production consultant on the new teen/young adult aimed TV series Gyrl, by noted author Michael Scott (The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, The Alchemyst, The Magician, The Necromancer, and The Warlock). The series revolves around Mac, a young singer with a cult following on social networks who has just broken through on the indie charts, and set to hit the mainstream. Mac, a slight, shorthaired girl, is also a Gyrl, a werewolf warrior of the clan Alta, one of the most ancient Were Clans in the Celtic World. In addition to traveling Europe performing and appearances on late night TV, Mac is also chasing a renegade Were-Lord. If she fails to capture him the human race is doomed.
Actress/screenwriter/producer Emma Thompson will pen an all-new Peter Rabbit story, which will be published by Beatrix Potter‘s publisher Frederick Warne on September 6, 2012. Titled The Further Tale of Peter Rabbit, the new book will be the 24the story in the Peter Rabbit collection, and it is the first time Frederick Warne will publish an addition title in the series that Beatrix Potter wrote between 1902-1930. Frederick Warne is a division of Penguin books.
SpongeBob SquarePants: The Complete 7th Season, a four-disc set, will release on DVD on December 6, 2011. Comprised of all 50 episodes from season seven, the title also features a host of special features. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Complete 7th Season is distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment.
BabyFirst expands its game and video-based apps with the launch of new interactive storybook apps for tablet and mobile devices based on series from its network. Based on its TV series VocabuLarry and Peekaboo, the first two digital storybook apps, VocabuLarry Things That Go and Peekaboo Goes Camping, are available now worldwide (introductory price US$0.99 and $1.99 respectively) in the iTunes and Android market. Spin Master appoints finance veteran Gaston Tano as EVP and CFO. Tano will oversee all facets of Spin Master’s financial operation and responsible for its financial position for long-term growth strategy and investment opportunities. Tano joins the company’s executive team from CLL Industries where was CFO.
DHX Media names Angeles Blanco as Director/Licensing. Based in DHX Media’s London office, Blanco will oversee consumer products development in all territories (excluding North America). She will focus her efforts on developing new consumer products offerings across multiple categories and platforms for properties such as Rastamouse and Animal Mechanicals, among others, as well as interacting with DHX’s existing international partners. Blanco will report to Josh Scherba, SVP/Distribution, DHX Media. A 17-year veteran of the licensing industry, as both licensor and agent, Blanco managed and implemented consumer products programs for brands including 2002 FIFA World Cup, Little Britain, Mr. Men and Little Miss, Shrek, The Simpsons, Star Wars and Waybuloo, to name a few. She most recently served as head of international licensing at Zodiak Rights. Prior to that Blanco was international licensing manager at Granada Ventures (ITV), and European brand manager for Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG).
