09/21/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 21, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Premiere week continues with the following season first-timers tonight, including the first head to head battle between CSI and Dr. McDreamy:

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC:  Grey’s Anatomy at 9p, Six Degrees at 10p
CBS:  CSI at 9p, Shark at 10p
NBC:  My Name is Earl at 8p, The Office at 9p, and ER at 10p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

This premiere week, the CW had a lawsuit filed against it by an author who claims the Sunday night series The Game which debuts on October 1, is a rip-off of story and characters from her unpublished novel.  Author Staci Robinson filed the $40 million lawsuit against the network and the show’s producers, claiming she gave a copy of her manuscript to one of the shows producers five years ago, when Robinson was applying for a writer’s assistant job at a production company.  The television series is about a woman who is decides to skip medical school so she can attend a local college in the city where her new boyfriend is an NFL football player, and ends up learning more than she bargained for about egos, groupies and image consultants.  Robinson is seeking monetary damages as well as a temporary restraining order preventing the show from premiering until this suit is cleared up.

About 800 people turned out for the WGA West’s Unity Rally Wednesday, organized to raise awareness of its efforts to unionize writers on reality shows.  After speeches by a few notables including Desperate Housewive’s Marc Cheery, the group marched en masse past CBS headquarters, where there are still striking writers out on the CW series America’s Next Top Model.  A statement by CBS read in part, “We respect guild members’ right to express their views … and look forward to meeting with the guild at the bargaining table.”

Tuesday night’s special on A&E Network, Dog: The Family Speaks reached 1.5 million A18-34 viewers and 2.9 million A18-49 viewers, making it the top A&E telecast in the history of the network for both demos. The special also delivered 2.6 million A25-54 viewers.

mtvU, MTV’s 24-hour college network, announces a full slate for the new semester. Some highlights include:

  • The new show Sucks Less, with Kevin Smith, has Kevin teaching students to write, shoot, cast, edit and produce mobisodes about what to do for the upcoming weekend, which will run on mtvU, mtvU.com and mtvU Mobile on Amp’d Mobile phones.
  • Breaking the Video: Cartel is back with students from Emory doing all the production elements on a video for the new band Cartel.
  • Middle East Coexistence follows six Muslim, four Jewish, two Arab-Christian and one agnostic living together for a semester as an experiment at Rutgers University.

Other programs which will return are mtvU Freshman Five, 2006 mtvU Woodie Awards, Dean’s List, mtvU Tailgate and Gameorz Ball Tours and Meet or Delete.

For those of you new to Cynopsis, a quick explanation of our long-standing policy regarding talking about ratings for new syndicated seriesWe don’t.  At least not for the first 2-3 weeks.  It easily takes that long if not longer for a new series to settle in, for viewers to sample and choose the shows the want to watch on a regular basis, and premiere week numbers tend to be more skewed based on the show’s p.r., time period and strength of the local station. So we’ll give everyone a little time to get their sea legs, and talk about these shows in a couple of weeks.

All this week — a little Cynopsis survey.   Forty-one shows will premiere this week, including almost the entire CBS and NBC schedules, and the brand new network, The CW kicks off on Wednesday.  Fox’s current schedule has already debuted this season, as has MyNetwork TV.  So let’s test our collective Programming Executive prowess — which of these new freshman series will either be the next breakout hit, or the first to be cancelled? Send your pick for BreakOut Hit and First to Fall here, with PIX in the subject line.  We’ll add them up and get back to you at week’s end. New Series Debuting this Season (not including midseason series):  (And if you’re still looking for a fall broadcast schedule with premiere dates, it’s on the homepage at www.cynopsis.com .)

* PRODUCTION / DEVELOPMENT / CASTING *

CBS has a new drama project in the hopper called Protect and Serve from Gary Scott Thompson and NBC Universal TV, about street cops in Los Angeles.

HBO has ordered up a fourth season of Entourage with an even dozen episodes.  The show should return in early 2007.

Desperate Housewives has added two recurring characters to the cast list – Kathleen York will play a mystery woman; and Matt Roth will play the man who buys Mary Alice’s house on Wisteria Lane.

MTV has ordered up a new reality series starring the rap group Three 6 Mafia, called Adventures in Hollyh ood.  The show chronicles the group and their entourage’s trip from Memphis to LA.

NBC has ordered a script for an untitled dramedy about a cop who moves to Hawaii where his ex-wife lives, after losing his family in the 9/11 terrorist attack in NYC. The cop soon takes up investigative hobbies on the island, which develops into good old fashioned cheeky-TV high action.  This project is from NBC Universal TV and exec producer Gary Scott Thompson.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Rainbow Media has named Marlea Willis as Senior Director/Public Relations for AMC and WE tv. Reporting to Theano Apostolou, VP/Public Relations, she will work closely with Apostoulou to set up consumer public relations campaigns. Additionally, Rainbow Media has upped Sean Fassett to VP/Research, AMC and Daniel Marcu to VP/Research, IFC. Both will report to Charlene Weisler, SVP/National Research, Rainbow Media.

Warner Bros. Television Group has elevated Michael Teicher to EVP/Media Sales. In this new position, he will manage all the media sales efforts for Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution and Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution, among other added duties.

Bobby Rivers has joined the nationally syndicated Clear Channel radio show, Wake Up with Whoopi, which airs each weekday morning from New York. A former host for Food Network and an entertainment reporter, Bobby will review movies each Friday with Whoopi Goldberg.

In an effort to consolidate the marketing and on-air departments at TBS and TNT, Jeff Gregor has moved into the position of CMO for TBS/TNT. Based in Atlanta, he will report to Steve Koonin, EVP/COO for TBS/TNT. Jeff is charged with managing all entertainment marketing and on-air promotions for both networks as well as the digital components.

Dana Runnells has been promoted to Director/Communications at Comcast Spotlight, the advertising sales arm of Comcast Cable. She will supervise internal and external communications for the company, in addition to devising public relations programs, fiscal planning, budget organization as well as raising the general awareness about the company’s productions and services.

Madison Square Garden has appointed Sandra Carreon-John as VP/Sports Team Publicity, starting September 25. Sandra will develop multi-faceted, proactive publicity initiatives for the Knicks, Rangers and Liberty teams.

World Championship Sports Network (WCSN) has hired Jennifer Canestraro as VP/Product and Production, as well as Robert Cooper as VP/Creative. Both will work together on WCSN’s products and programming to enhance the network’s experience for sports fans.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1993 – Russia approaches anarchy when President Boris Yeltsin dissolves Parliament in a bid to solidify his own power.  By ordering a referendum on his plan to consolidate power in the presidency, Yeltsin hoped to marginalize the Communist opposition in the parliament building, known as the “White House.” After his clearly illegal decree, the parliament announced an attempted coup.  The standoff was broken when Yeltsin loyalists shelled the “White House” and forced the surrender of the parliamentary opposition.
