Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 1, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

As if JibJab wasn’t already lots of fun, the folks at JibJab (creators of the political satire This Land, and OfficeMax’s ElfYourself) have launched the new kid/family-centric brand JibJab Jr. (yeah, go ahead say it out loud), and its first product the interactive preschool-targeted JibJab Jr. Books app for the iPad.  The JibJab Jr. Books app, which featuring JibJab’s “Personalized Starring You” feature, debuts with two book titles The Biggest Pizza Ever and The Alphabet Wrangler.  New books will release every month, beginning next month with underwater musical adventure Ocean Commotion.  Designed to provide parents and kids with time to unwind together reading stories and having fun before bed, the titles can be personalized (e.g. insert your kid’s name, face, gender and skin color) as many times as the user wants (for no additional cost).  The JibJab Jr. Books app is free to download form Apple’s app store and comes bundled with one free book, with additional book titles available for $7.99 or for $3.99 if parents sign up for the book a month plan (cancelable at any time).

Turner Media Innovations and Sony Pictures ink a two-year, pan-regional sponsorship deal for Cartoon Network EMEA, making Sony the exclusive theatrical movie partner for Cartoon Network EMEA, per MediaWeek.  The deal is expected to grow to include Asia and Latin America.  Under the deal, which includes the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Turkey and the Middle East, Sony Pictures Releasing will promote nine of its upcoming feature film releases on Cartoon Network.  The partnership, which launched with The Smurfs movie, is set to include upcoming movies such as The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn, Arthur Christmas, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, Men in Black 3, The Amazing Spider-Man and Hotel Transylvania.  Turner Media Innovations will manage the promotional efforts with Sony’s agency OMD, across Cartoon Network EMEA.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Neil Patrick Harris returns as the evil Dr. Blowhole on Nickelodeon‘s new Penguins of Madagascar hour-long animated special, Blowhole Strikes Back, which premieres Friday, September 9, 8-9p.  In this special Harris performs four original songs as Dr. Blowhole, featuring lyrics penned by series executive producers Robert Schooley and Mark McCorkle and composed by Adam Berry.  Produced at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, the special also features Andy Richter (Late Night with Conan O’Brien) and Tom McGrath (co-creator of the penguins from the Madagascar feature films) reprising their roles as Mort and Skipper from the movies.  To support Blowhole Strikes Back, Nick.com is currently featuring training games, including Menace of the Mind-Jacker, based on the special.  Additionally, Nick.com and the network’s social media channels will make songs from the episode available and there will be a dedicated Penguins category on Nickelodeon’s VOD.

Al Roker, NBC’s The Today Show’s meteorologist, will make an animated guest appearance on a new episode of the K6-12 targeted series WordGirl on Labor Day, Monday, September 5 on PBS Kid Go! (check local listings).  And the WordGirl Word of the Month? You guessed it  it’s “Meteorologist.”

Power Rangers gets new TV deals in Latin America as Marvista Entertainment, the exclusive international TV distributor for Saban Brands‘ new Power Rangers Samurai and classic Power Rangers series, inks terrestrial TV licensing pacts for the property across the region via its distribution partnership with Argentina’s Snap TV.  New Latin American broadcast partners for Power Rangers Samurai include, America TV (Peru), TCTV (Ecuador), Corp Medcom Panama, Telefuturo (Paraguay), Unitel (Bolivia), Intrasas TV (Nicaragua) and Monte Carlo TV (Uruguay).  Power Rangers Samurai currently airs on Nickelodeon throughout Latin America, and is set to debut this year on Grupo Televisa (Mexico) and Bandeirantes (Brazil).

BabyTV has entered into a sales and distribution partnership with Entertainment One to make its original infant/toddler programming is available for purchase and download on digital platforms including the iTunes Store beginning this week in the UK.  The deal will also see Entertainment one begin by distributing ten of BabyTV’s shows via the iTunes Store, including Cuddlies, Babyhood, Oliver, Pitch & Potch, Draco, Mr. Snail, Pim & Pimba, Charlie, Zoe and Favorite Nursery Rhymes.  The BabyTV shows are expected to be available on digital platforms in further countries soon.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Breakthrough Entertainment supports the upcoming launch of its teen-targeted animated series Crash Canyon, launching on Teletoon at Night next month, with the debut of a new online social networking game, Crash Canyon Quest.  The new Crash Canyon Quest game (available in English at www.teletoonatnight.com/crashcanyon , and French at www.teletoonlanuit.com/crashcanyon ), lets players create characters and join the residents of Crash Canyon, who send them on endless humorous quests where they can unlock 15 mini games along the way.  In the game, players have a range of social networking tools available to them from dedicated friends lists, to gifting, to messaging, to visiting each other’s Crash corner. Five expansion packs will be released throughout the year, featuring additional content. Ultimate Pay, a third-party payment system is employed in the game environment, which allows players to purchase exclusive features and items.

Nickelodeon Home Entertainment‘s new Victorious: Season One, Volume Two, a 2-disc DVD distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, is set for release on November 1, 2011.  The title includes the last nine episode of the first season of the series, which includes the hour-long special Freak the Freak Out and the crossover special with iCarly, iParty with Victorious.  Bonus content featured on the Victorious: Season One, Volume Two includes a behind the scenes iParty with Victorious mash-up performance and the music video Best Friend’s Brother.

CopCorp Licensing enters into a deal with Berkshire Fashions as a new US licensee for Zoodorable, a new property from artist/illustrator Han L. Lee (Bobby Jack brand).  Under the agreement Berkshire Fashions will produce and sell a range of Zoodorable branded products including headwear (baseball caps, fashion cut and sew, cold weather hats) for kids and adults, cold weather accessories (e.g. hats, mittens, gloves, arm warmers, ear muffs, scarves), as well as rain umbrellas, rain slickers, rain boots, slippers, flip flops, socks and slipper socks.

The NPD Group’s Kids Industry Data Service (KIDS) conducted a survey earlier this month asking parents the open-ended unaided question “Where do you plan to do most of the back to school shopping for your child(ren)?”  They compiled 1,785 mentions of back-to-school shopping destinations for K0-14.  The top responses to the KIDS survey of August 2011 are as follows:

35%    Walmart
22%    Target
5%      Kohl’s
4%      JC Penney
4%      Staples
3%      Old Navy
2%      Kmart

At the channel level, 61% of responses were for mass merchants, 12% department stores, 6% office stores, 6% major chains, 4% mall stores, 2% discount stores, and 1% drug stores.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jules Clarkson is named Director/Marketing and Commercial Partnerships, Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand.  In his new position, Clarkson is charged with promoting the Nickelodeon channels and their brands to consumers, carriers and advertisers.  Clarkson takes over the reins from Alison Bakunowich, who was upped and relocated to Nickelodeon UK earlier this year.  Clarkson previously served as European Marketing Director for Electronic Arts, Maxis and EALA studios and toiled for seven years for Hasbro, including as Head of Marketing, Hasbro Australia.  Nickelodeon Australia is a joint venture between Viacom International Media Networks and XYZnetworks.
