NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

YouTube announced yesterday that its users now have the option to download up to 48 hours of clips to their mobile devices to watch offline.
In other words: As the video landscape become even more competitive, it’s smart for YT to make its content as available as possible, on as many devices as possible. It remains to be seen if this pumps up the site’s views even more than the six billion hours already streamed every month.

Nokia, newly purchased by Microsoft, confirmed that it plans to release a large-screen phone and a Windows tablet on Oct. 22.

CONTENT MEDIA

Hulu landed exclusive digital rights to the documentary Generation Iron for streaming starting on Dec. 17. Mickey Rourke narrates the documentary, which follows the world’s top bodybuilders as they vie to win the “Mr. Olympia” title. The film has a limited release in theatres this weekend; a trailer can be watched on Hulu and Hulu Plus… yesterday the online streaming service also announced a multiyear deal with BBC Worldwide to add 2,000 episodes from shows like Doctor Who and Top Gear on Hulu Plus. BBC has streaming deals with Netflix and Amazon.com as well.

Apple could see sales of a whopping 34.5 million iPhones in its third quarter even though the latest smartphone hasn’t even hit the shelves yet. Fortune reported the expected 28 percent sales hike from last year’s 26.9 million iPhones sold during the same period. The report includes iPhone 5C pre-sales from Sept. 13-15.

RESEARCH

Netflix will grow to an estimated 26 billion hours of streaming in 2018, according to The Division Group’s latest report. However, the data showed U.S. subscriptions and streaming will level out around by 2020 in the U.S.

ADVERTISING

Gillette released a music video to mark the start of the NFL season and the end to its six-part web series chronicling NFL preparation, Built for Training. The video was produced by Oscar winning director Michel Gondry (remember Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind?), and can be seen at http://www.nfl.com/builtfortraining.

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

With the launch of its latest software update, iOS7, Apple is now offering Legacy Apps – great news for owners of older iPhones and iPads. That way, even those without the latest iOS update can download a previous, compatible version.

Video news source Newsy launched its new iPhone and iPod Touch app along with the Apple’s iOS 7 update. The new app has updated graphics, allows users to view videos on landscape and portrait orientations, and navigate the app by sections. Currently, Newsy is the highest-rated video news app in the App Store – that’s 5 stars.

TECHNOLOGY

Sony is releasing its own dongle device: the Bravia Smart Stick for $149. The dongle will include apps like Netflix, HuluPlus, Redbox Instant by Verizon, YouTube and Amazon Instant Video.
In other words: Sony’s plan is to dangle a whole lot of new features in their dongle, in hopes of evening out the playing field with their biggest rival, Google’s $35 Chromecast.

“Go big or go home” is apparently BlackBerry’s latest theme for its BlackBerry Z30 smartphone unveiled Wednesday. The Z30 is the biggest BlackBerry smartphone, with a five-inch screen and massive claimed battery life of 25 hours per charge.
In other words: Will bigger actually bring it home for BlackBerry? The demand for its products is still low, and Blackberry has been pushing for buyout options. More will be revealed when August quarter numbers roll in next week.

EXEC MOVES

Two major Facebook employees, Project Manager for Video Ads Justin Schaffer and Corporate Communications Manager Ashley Zander are leaving the company this week. The Wall Street Journal reports Schafer was one of the main leaders of the video ad department and has not disclosed his next move, while Zander will join Chinese company Alibaba as the Associate Director of International Corporate Affairs. 

Twitter named Jeff Sandquist as its Director of Platform Partnerships. Sandquist previously worked as Senior Director of Developer Relations and other roles at Microsoft for 16 years… another ex-Microsoft employee, Christian Kleinerman, joined YouTube this week as the new Director of Product Management.

Yahoo has brought on Jean-Baptiste Queru as its new Architect and Senior Principal Engineer for Mobile. Queru previously worked as Google’s Android Open Source Project Tech Lead.

Hulu Senior Vice President of Sales Kevin McGurn has jumped to media-discovery app Shazam as its new Chief Revenue Officer.

Andrew Wilson has been named Electronic Arts newest CEO. Wilson previously led the second largest videogame producer’s EA Sports division.
