~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Just after launching on September 7, HBO gave its new drama series True Blood a nod for a second season. The series, created by Alan Ball, will start production on new episodes early next year in Los Angeles with a planned summer premiere date.

Fine Living Network signed a multi-year syndication deal with NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution involving NBC’s The Biggest Loser and Bravo’s former Queer Eye series. The agreement allows Fine Living to repurpose current episodes of Biggest Loser, airing them on Saturdays and Sundays at 9p starting this weekend. Fine Living also got the exclusive cable rights to The Biggest Loser: Couples when it premieres next year. Additionally, Fine Living acquired all 99 episodes of Queer Eye, including the rarely seen pilot episode, and will air the male makeover series on Monday nights at 9p beginning October 13.

VH1 Classic will debut a new series, VH1 Classic All Time Top 10 on October 10 at 10p (get it? – 10/10 at 10p). This new weekly series will be hosted by Mark Goodman and will zoom in on a specific artist or music type such as Madonna, Van Halen, Def Leppard, metal music and more. Additionally, the network will air the eight-episode series VH1 Classic One-Hit Wonders hosted by Carrie Keagan starting December 1 through December 4. Two episodes will air each night at 9p which will look at music’s one-timers from a variety of genres.

ABC Family‘s season three debut of Lincoln Heights Tuesday at 8p delivered 646,000 A18-49 viewers; 472,000 W18-49 viewers; 653,000 Females 12-34; as well as 1.7 million total viewers.

Following the presidential election in November, someone else will have to portray Sen. Hillary Clinton on NBC’s Saturday Night Live as Amy Poehler will be leaving to go on maternity leave after the birth of her first child and she will be preparing for her new primetime series on NBC, the anticipated spinoff of The Office.

More content companies have signed up for exhibit space at the 2009 International CES based in Las Vegas next January 8-11, reports B&C. The Consumer Electronics Association has actively pursued programmers, studios and cable companies to have a larger presence in the usually tech-centric convention. Some of the content companies that will be there include Nielsen, Universal Studios Home Entertainment, MTV Networks and Buena Vista Home Entertainment.

CBS’ 60 Minutes is celebrating several notable things this Sunday: its 40th anniversary of its first season (the news magazine launched on September 24, 1968); the show’s pre-season premiere featuring interviews with both presidential nominees, Senators Barack Obama and John McCain; and its first show in hi-def which will be normal from now on. Incidentally, 60 Minutes’ first show in 1968 featured talks with presidential nominees Richard Nixon and Hubert Humphrey.

Candace Bushnell, author of Sex and the City claimed a deal with HarperCollins Children’s Bray and Bray division for two new novels for the teen market centered on character Carrie Bradshaw. The books will focus on Carrie’s high school years where, according to Bushnell Carrie “began observing and commenting on the social scene” around her. The books are due out in the fall of 2010.

World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) continues its expansion in Mexico, reports Variety. WWE concluded a new deal to have weekly Smackdown reach more than 20 million households via TV Azteca, airing Friday nights at 10p starting October 3 on Azteca 7. Smackdown previously aired on cable channel Canal 52 which reached 1 million homes. This new deal follows one from last week with Televisa where WWE signed on to have its WWE Raw show air on Galavision Canal 9 also starting in October.

Tribune Company and Local TV Holdings, LLC are working together on a local marketing agreement for their television stations in Denver and a shared services agreement for their stations in St. Louis. The deal allows the stations to stagger news, programming and community affairs programs with the goal to benefit viewers’ lifestyle demands. Additionally, the stations in both markets will operate out of one facility, share news resources and some programming. The stations involved include Tribune’s two CW affiliates: KWGN/Denver and KPLR/St. Louis; and Local TV’s two FOX affiliates: KDVR/Denver and KTVI/St. Louis.

Gainesville, FL market will get its own NBC network affiliate in early 2009, as MPS Media will broadcast the new affiliate on digital TV station, WNBW. MPS Media also joined with New Age Media of Gainesville, owner of CBS affiliate WGFL, in a joint services agreement giving oversight of some operational services for WNBW-NBC 9 to WGFL. With this addition, Gainesville will now have all broadcast network affiliates represented.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FOX is developing a law-themed 60m dramedy and approved a put pilot order based on the fairy tale and classic Disney movie “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” according to THR. The project, tentatively titled Georgia and the Seven Associates and produced by ABC Studios, will be set in Los Angeles about a young female lawyer, Georgia Burnett who is fired from a top law firm by her stepmother and then sets up shop with seven zany lawyers in a storefront legal office. The story will carry the fairy tale idea even further as each of Georgia’s associates will have characteristics similar to the seven dwarfs and some of their cases will incorporate other fairy tale themes such as “The Three Little Pigs”. Creators on the project include ABC Studios’ Chris Brancato and Bert Salke along with David Weissman and David Diamond. Ken Kwapis (The Office) will direct the pilot. All five are also executive producing.

USA Network gave a cast-contingent pilot order for the tentatively-titled Operating Instructions. The story centers on a female trauma surgeon who takes over as head of a military hospital after being stationed in Iraq. Universal Cable Productions and Conan O’Brien’s company Conaco are producing.

Casting Call: A major television network is looking for a high-energy, comedic guy to host a Japanese game show pilot. The candidate must be of Japanese descent or appear to be, have a bold personality and a great sense of humor, be 21-35 years old and be fluent in the English language. Previous television experience is not needed yet a stand-up comedy/improv background would be considered a plus. Interested candidates should send an email to Suzette Brown at
along with a recent headshot and a brief description on why you would be perfect for this role.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Technology is worming its way into the race for the White House in a variety of ways this week. First a short-lived brouhaha erupted over the McCain’s campaign’s latest gaffe – an assertion from the senator’s top economic advisor that the former Commerce Committee member actually helped create the BlackBerry. Then former HP CEO Carly Fiorina, a senior McCain adviser once on the VP short list, answered “no” on KTRS Radio in St. Louis to the question of whether or not Sarah Palin had the experience to run a major company. Finally allegations that Ms. Palin is using her personal Yahoo email account to conduct state business proved to be too much of a temptation for hackers. Assailants posted a number of her personal emails on WikiLeaks and Gawker yesterday. So winds the campaign trail in the digital age.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Nickelodeon gives the go ahead for the new CG animated series Fanboy and Chum Chum (26×30), a spin-off from the Nicktoons Network’s upcoming anthology series Random! Cartoons, while Nick Jr. begins production on a new original mixed 2D/3D animation and live-action series, Team Umizoomi (20 episodes).  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  BBC Worldwide will launch two new channels, CBeebies and BBC Knowledge, on FOXTEL this November.  The kiddy channel will become part of the My Playtime package, which includes Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Boomerang and others.  The My World package will house BBC Knowledge.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
