Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 16, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
The advocacy group Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood is petitioning the FCC to prevent Viacom’s Nicktoons network from launching the new animated series Zevo-3, which it says is a commercial for the Skechers footwear company that originated the characters initially for marketing their product. Zevo-3 is scheduled to debut on Nicktoons, a Nickelodeon network, on October 11, 2010. The group says that the new season would be in violation of The Children’s Television Act, which says that kid-targeted programming can only feature 10.5-minutes of commercials per hour on weekdays, and 12-minutes per hour on weekends. The network stands by the series.
Skywriter Media & Entertainment Group inks a deal with Hulk Hogan, who will take on the role of judge in the new kid game/reality show, Hogan’s Court (26×30). Created by Christopher Greaves, Asher Lenz and Jason Armstrong, Hogan’s Court is produced by Skywriter Television, Positive Productions and Lenz Entertainment. Targeted to K8-12, the series will focus on real kid issues with Hogan helping bring humor and resolution to the issues. Skywriter will showcase the series at Mipcom/MipJunior next month where it will be making pre-sale deals for the series.
Kenn Viselman presents…Inc., unveils three new ventures, The itsy bitsy Entertainment Company, A teenie weenie Music Publishing Company and Yellow Polka Dot Bikini Multi-Media. Viselman re-acquires The itsy bitsy Entertainment Company, which he launched and helped bring Teletubbies to the US, from The Handelman Company. The itsy bitsy Entertainment Company will now focus on Viselman’s newest efforts including the new kid’s programming block Millipede and TV series based on the upcoming movie The Oogieloves in The Big Balloon adventure. A teenie weenie Music Publishing Company will feature music and artists for all ages. Meanwhile, Yellow Polka Dot Bikini Multi-Media will showcase tween-targeted entertainment including TV and publishing.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Disney and Offspring Entertainment acquire the feature film rights to Matched, the first book in Ally Condie‘s new young adult trilogy that publisher Dutton is set to release November 30, 2010, per Variety. Offspring Entertainment, which is based at Disney, is Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot’s production company. Matched is set in a futuristic society that dictates what people can read, watch and believe and, at 18, who they will spend their lives with, which is determined during a matching ceremony. Like several recent movies based on popular young adult novels, Matched features a love triangle (a la Twilight, and Fallen, which Disney also recently optioned).

MORE KIDS STUFF
PIX11 (WPIX/Channel 11) picks up M@dAbout, the tween/teen-targeted sketch comedy series. Designed to teach tweens/teens life lessons, the comedy educational/information (E/I) series will air on PIX11 in the NY area on Saturdays at 12 noon beginning September 18. Created y Minneapolis-based The National Theatre for Children (NTC), M@dAbout also features a website at www.madabout.tv (including, behind the scenes photos, videos, updates), and a Facebook page. The nationally syndicated series is available 85% of TV households.
Angela Kinsey (Angela Martin on The Office) will make a guest appearances in a new episode of Nick Jr.‘s series, Yo Gabba Gabba!, set to premiere this Sunday, September 19 at 5p. The episode also features musical guests The Faint and Mark Mothersbaugh (DEVO) in his recurring segment Mark’s Magic Pictures. Additionally, bonus music tracks from the new episode are featured on the Yo Gabba Gabba! Music is Awesome Volume 2 album, which is available now on iTunes and Amazon.
Moonscoop completes a deal with Middle East free TV channel MBC3 for four animated series. Under the deal MBC3 picks up: Zevo-3 (26×30) – an animated action/comedy produced by Moonscoop for Skechers Entertainment; Gasp! (52×11) an animated series based on comic book series by Australian author/illustrator Terry Denton, and produced by SLR Productions, in association with Screen Australia, Network Nine Australia, ABC Kids, Agogo and Moonscoop; The DaVincibles (52×11) an animated comedy co-created/co-produced by Moonscoop and Neo Network, with other co-production partners including Rai Fiction, SLR, Telegael and Big Animation; and Tara Duncan (26×22) a 2D animated series co-produced by ckMoonscoop and DQ Entertainment.
Artzooka! heads to Latin America as part of a deal between CCI Entertainment and Discovery Kids Latin America. Under the agreement two versions of the series will be produced, on in Spanish and the other in Portuguese for the Latin American Market. Both are slated to debut November 22, 2010. The Brazilian/Portuguese version of Artzooka! will be hosted by Daniel Granieri, with the Spanish-language version hosted by Bruno Lazarro. An English version of Artzooka! launched on CBC (Canada) last week. The English-language Artzooka! has been acquired by Nickelodeon Asia and Noga Israel.
Canadian broadcasters TVO and SRC have picked up a second season of the 3D CG animated series Rob the Robot, a co-production between Amberwood Entertainment and Singapore’s One Animation. Following on the heels of launch of Rob the Robot (52×11) on TVO this week, the second season will also include 52×11 episodes. The series is produced with support from the MDA, CMF, and the Shaw Rocket Fun.
The preschool animated series My Friend Book has been picked up Sao TV (Vietnam), KRO (Netherlands), and Kanal D (Turkey). Supported by the European Commission, My Friend Boo revolves around three young friends and a magical dog named Boo. Book takes the kids on adventures where they learn about a range of issues, including healthy food choices and exercising, energy and water conservation in an age appropriate way. Each episode also features teaching materials in local languages that are available for download. The series is available for free to broadcasters.

The 24-pack of Bandz includes four of each six shapes: headphones, music note and I Heart JB, Bieber Heart, and Bieber singing and his hat. This Saturday, September 18, the new Justin Bieber Silly Bandz will be available exclusively at 10 Toys “R” Us and or Toys “R” US/Babies “R” Us stores nationwide as well as online at Toysrus.com/justinbieber ( www.toysrus.com/justinbieber ). Pacific Entertainment Corporation helps bring Baby Genius to amusement prizing with a new licensing deal for soft-sculpt toys with NANCO Nancy Sales Company. Under the deal, NANCO will manufacture and distribute Baby Genius themed soft-sculpt toys in various sizes to amusement channels (e.g. amusement parks, carnivals, arcades etc.) across the US, Canada and Mexico. Additionally, categories include soft-sculpt key chains, beanbag toys, vinyl inflatables, rubber basketballs and novelty play balls. The Joester Loria Group is the exclusive licensing agency for Baby Genius and brokered the deal, which runs through 2012.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Martha Van Gelder is appointed President, Zula International, a kid-centric entertainment and education company. Most recently, Van Gelder served as VP and MD, International at Gaiam. She previously held executive positions with Nelvana, Sesame Workshop, and Disney’s home entertainment division.
Sandy Ashendorf is appointed EVP/Network Distribution, BBC Worldwide America. Ashendorf is responsible for affiliate sales and marketing initiatives in the US for BBCWW America’s channels and assets, which include BBC America in standard and high definition, VOD, and BBC World News. She takes over for Kristina Song. Ashendorf will report to recently named BBC Worldwide America COO, Ann Sarnoff. An industry veteran, Ashendorf was recently a media consultant, including for BBC America, and prior to that spent close to two decades with MTV Networks, ultimately serving as EVP/Affiliate Sales and Marketing, and managing sales teams responsible for distribution across satellite, telco and wireless, as well as legal and strategic distribution related issues. Congrats Sandy!
Discovery Communications names Meg Lowe as SVP/Domestic Distribution. In her new position Lowe will head all sales and marketing efforts for Discovery’s Domestic Distribution team, responsible for distribution of all 13 network with all US distribution partners. She will oversee all activities and carriage negotiations for Discovery’s suite of HD channels, all Discovery US Hispanic networks and joint venture services, including the upcoming The Hub, with partner Hasbro, and 3D network with Sony and Imax. Lowe previously spent 15 years with MTV Networks, where she most recently served as SVP/Content Distribution and Marketing, overseeing distribution for all MTV and BET Networks.
