Mobile apps have made an indelible impact on digitally savvy users but they have yet to penetrate mainstream consumers, according to a new survey of nearly 2,000 users from the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Some 35% of U.S. adults have apps on their phones, but only 24% of adults have used them. Only 29% of cell phone owners have ever downloaded an app to their phone and only 13% have ever paid for the privilege. App use drags considerably behind other interactive functions such as picture taking and texting, which nearly 75% of users say they do. Among adult cell phone users who have apps on their phones, the mean number of apps is 18. However, the median number of apps is 10, suggesting there are heavy apps users on the high end of the scale who have a disproportionate number of apps on their phones, particularly among younger users.
Percent of adult cell phone users who do each of the following on their phone
Take a picture 76%
Send or receive text messages 72%
Access the internet 38%
Play a game 34%
Send or receive email 34%
Record a video 34%
Play music 33%
Send/receive instant messages 30%
Use an app 29%

HP’s existing and upcoming “ePrint” enabled printers will be the first to support printing direct from iOS devices.
FremantleMedia Enterprises and developer Lucia have launched a pair of iPad apps to bring two of its most popular game shows to the popular tablet:

New York-based fashion magazine Nylon launched a new iPad app for $2.99/issue, allowing users to page through all the editorial from the print version, as well as exclusive video interviews, behind-the-scenes footage from photo shoots, short films, MP3s, movie clips and additional bonus fashion, beauty, music, and lifestyle content. Colman Andrews was named as Editorial Director of Spanfeller Media Group’s planned food site The Daily Meal, which goes live Oct. 15, 2010. He will be joined by food travel writer Valaer Murray as Managing Editor.
~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~
Perhaps taking a step toward solving its looming revenue generating problem, Twitter began rolling out an entirely new look, architecture and functionality set this week designed to make the microblogging site more immersive. (The site is rolling out the changes slowly, but here’s a website and Apple-style video ad that introduces “the new Twitter.com.”) The first thing you’ll notice is a bifurcated interface that adds an information screen to the normal timeline of incoming Tweets. Click on an individual entry to see more recent tweets as well as photos and videos embedded from the sender from numerous partners including Dailybooth, Flickr, Justin.TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, Twitvid, USTREAM, Vimeo and YouTube. The info acts as a discovery engine in its own right – allowing you to sift though replies or even access a location map to see where in the world the tweet was sent from. Users can also now fill out mini profiles of themselves. The hope, of course, is that advertisers will be convinced that the environment is a compelling one to place their brand next to. The Twitter redesign helps bump some negative stories about the site off the tabloids after singer John Mayer shuttered his account (much to the dismay of his 3.7 million followers.)
