Cynopsis: DIGITAL
09/13/12

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 13, 2012, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

You might have heard that Apple unveiled the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 yesterday. Here are the important details to know before you decide to pre-order it:

  • It’s bigger and it’s lighter. The screen has been upgraded to a 4-inch display, now offering a 16×9 aspect ratio. This means that there will be an extra row for apps on the screen. Other physical upgrades, including a smaller dock connector, means the iPhone 5 will be 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S.
  • It’s faster. The phone runs on an A6, which Apple said makes it twice as fast as the iPhone 4S.
  • The iPhone 5 has support for Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint’s 4G LTE networks.
  • A deeper integration with Facebook includes the ability to see “Likes” in the App Store. When a user likes an app inside the App Store, that action will show up on the social network (cc: advertisers).
  • Users will also be able to post status updates on Facebook by speaking to Siri.
  • Upgrades to the camera include support for 1080p video, as well as the ability to take photos while shooting a video.
  • A revamped version of iTunes, which will include iCloud so users can sync purchases made on any Apple device, will be available sometime in October.
  • Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 begin this Friday, September 14. Apple will start to ship the device next Friday, September 21. iOS 6 will be available on September 19.

M-Go, an upcoming digital video/storefront service founded by DreamWorks Animation and Technicolor, has inked licensing deals with five of the six major Hollywood studios — NBCUniversal, Paramount, Sony Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox, and Warner Bros. — to offer their film and television titles across multiple connected devices. Once it launches later this year, consumers will be able to rent or purchase content from the aforementioned studios (day and date for new film releases). The service will be accessible on connected devices running on iOS, Android, and Windows. Additionally, M-Go will come as a pre-loaded app on Samsung’s 2012 Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, and tablets; Vizio’s 2012 Smart TVs, Blu-ray players, tablets, and digital media players; and Intel Utrabook devices. M-Go will also be compatible with Hollywood’s UltraViolet digital locker initiative so users who have stored movies on UltraViolet can watch it wherever they want.

Univision News has announced the dates for its “Meet the Candidates” events, which will feature Mitt Romney and Barack Obama meeting and addressing Hispanic voters on September 19 and 20, respectively. Hosted alongside Facebook at the University of Miami BankUnited Center Fieldhouse, the events will be streamed online in English on the Univision Noticias Facebook page, while the social network’s politics hub will also highlight the events.

UK-based live video solutions company Streamworks has partnered with the United Nations Department of Public Information to stream United Nations Television (UNTV) coverage of the proceedings that will take place at UN headquarters in NY. Content will include live coverage of the Security Council, the General Assembly, press conferences, special events, and short-form documentaries produced by in-house teams at the UN. UNTV content can be currently accessed at a custom web portal. Once Streamworks’ technology is in place, the partners say they will be able to expand video distribution at a higher quality. The content will be platform-agnostic so viewers can access the coverage on a variety of connected devices. Hoping to be operational in time for the UN General Assembly, fiber lines are currently being built at the UN Secretariat and into Streamworks’ global infrastructure. The 67th session of the General Assembly opens in NY on Tuesday, September 18.

VEVO has partnered with the Virgin Produced Channel to offer music video content and original programming to fliers aboard Virgin America. Available via the airline company’s in-flight entertainment system Red, Virgin Produced and VEVO will curate a 30-minute programming block of high-definition video content, including music videos from popular artists, VEVO Originals (such as its Go Shows and Sound + City series), and more. The Virgin Produced Channel launched onboard Virgin America this past April, and has plans to expand its network of channels in the future.

NBTV Studios, a global multiplatform media company, has opened a new office in Los Angeles called NBTV West, which will focus on original content development and production for TV, film, web, and mobile. “NBTV West is designed to foster relationships with the local creative community in Hollywood to develop and produce interactive multiplatform media content,” said Nick Buzzell, President of NBTV Studios. The company in the past has worked with the likes of USA Network, Sprint, Puma, and AKQA, to develop and produce video content.

Frank Saperstein, who was a producer on The Ren & Stimpy Show and Pee-wee’s Playhouse, is leaving his post as SVP/Family Television at Entertainment One Group to launch his own entertainment company, Surprise Bag. “The strategy at Surprise Bag is content discovery, creation, nurturing, and building for traditional and evolving platforms in partnerships that provide distribution, infrastructure, financing, and areas of expertise that complement Surprise Bag,” says Saperstein. “Areas of content emphasis will include but not be limited to kids and family fare,” he adds.

At an investor event, Steve Hasker, President/Media Products and Advertiser Solutions at Nielsen, said the company plans to expand its mobile measurement practices to include apps, per MediaPost. Nielsen currently tracks mobile web activity on tablets and smartphones. However, he cautioned that this expansion is going to take some time. Also according to the report of Hasker’s speech, in October Nielsen plans to unveil the founding media and advertiser partners of a new cross-platform measurement service that focuses on TV, computer, and tablet usage.

comScore has updated the methodology it uses to determine its monthly rankings of the top 50 US web properties (the company’s Media Metrix service). The company says the enhancements include “updated demographic universe estimates based on data from the 2010 US census,” which provides a more accurate view of how much of the country’s population falls into each demographic. As for the other two updates, comScore says it has improved its enumeration survey methodology to better represent people who live in cell-phone only households and has developed a new technique that accounts for cookie rejection in Safari browsers for sites that are measured via the company’s Unified Digital Measurement methodology. This update has been applied to its August 2012, which is highlighted below in “Trends, Research, Etc.”

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC. ~

Digital ad solutions provider MediaMind has released the results of a recent study it conducted about online video, which finds that the click-through rate for in-stream video ads, including IAB’s VAST and VPAID formats, is 27.4 times higher than that of standard banners and 12 times higher than that of rich media ads. MediaMind analyzed over 3 billion ad impressions worldwide during the first half of 2012 to draw its conclusions regarding how much consumers are paying attention to online video in ads. Other findings demonstrate that interactive video advertising is even more effective than standard video. According to the study, globally, consumers were 10% more likely to watch an interactive video ad (based on IAB’s VPAID standard) to completion than rich media ads that include video.

The top five online properties in the US for August 2012, according to the latest (and updated) comScore Media Metrix data, are Google (187 million unique visitors), Microsoft (170 million), Yahoo (164 million), Facebook (152 million), and AOL (112 million). Names/brands you would recognize from the television world that sat among the top 20 include CBS Interactive at #10 (76.9 million unique visitors), Turner Digital at #13 (75.2 million), Comcast/NBCUniversal at #16 (72 million), Viacom Digital at #17 (68.6 million), and The Weather Channel at #19 (53.2 million).
