Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 9, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Portman Film & Television, a unit of Digital Rights Group, has formed Little Portman, a new division that will be home to the company’s newly acquired kid’s programming.  Anke Stoll will serve as Head/ Co-Productions and Acquisitions for Little Portman.  (For first Mipcom offerings see below)

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Marvel Animation, a division of Marvel Entertainment, is in production on a new animated series, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes (26×30), with Film Roman producing.  Staring Marvel characters, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Giant Man and Wasp, The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is expected to be available for broadcast in 2011, which would coincide with Marvel Studios’ release of the feature film The First Avenger: Captain America (May 6, 2011) and The Avengers (July 15, 2011).  Meanwhile, don’t forget that Marvel Animation has four new animated series on the way, Wolverine and the X-Men and Iron Man: Armored Adventures, will both bow on Nicktoons Network in 2009, with Marvel Super Hero Squad and The Black Panther also set for next year (network TBA).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Multiplatform kids programmer Kabillion singed a deal with ad management system BlackArrow to deploy its video advertising platform within its broadband and VOD content. The BlackArrow system dynamically contracts, targets, traffics and reports on advertising inventory to maximize revenues from ad-supported video programming.

Novel Entertainment and its distribution partner Little Bird Rights have completed several international sales for the 2D animated series Horrid Henry ahead of Mipcom.  Little Bird, which has worldwide TV rights to the show outside the UK and Germany, has signed broadcast deals for the first season of Horrid Henry (52×11) with MNet (South Africa), RTP (Portugal), Digiturk (Turkey) and SVT (Sweden), as well as with Polish production company Op Art.  CITV has commissioned a second season (52×11 for a total of 104×11), which Novel Entertainment is currently in production on and is scheduled to deliver in spring 2009.

Target Entertainment Group unveils a range of new programming at Mipcom, including those aimed at kids:

  • The Revenge of Alastair Fury (13×30)  produced by Little Brother Productions for CBBC (UK)  the live-action comedy revolves around the antics of Alistair (11-yrs) as he works to get even with the enemy on behalf of little brothers the world round.
  • The Adventures of Brush Lee and Jackie Chain  an animated series about an evil toilet chain and a heroic brush in a kung-fu battle comedy.  From the UK-based production company Naughty Tortoise.
  • Vegetable Wrestling Federation  this animated series about a group of vegetables that gather at the back of a grocery store for undergrounds wrestling matches.  Also from the folks at Naughty Tortoise.

The first three titles to debut under Portman Film & Television’s new Little Portman banner, and will be showcased at Mipcom, are:

  • Paradise Cafe (13×30), a beachside comedy mystery with a supernatural twist, which means beautiful locations.  The series is a co-production of Endemol/Initial for CBBC (UK) and the Gibson Group for TVNZ (New Zealand), and will air on CBBC from January.
  • Sorry, I’ve Got No Head (26×30), a sketch comedy series for Kids/tweens 8-12.  The series is also a CBBC commission and comes from the producers of The Graham Norton Show, So Television.
  • Time Trackers (13×30), aimed at K6-10, the series follows three teens from different eras on a time-traveling mission to combat a range of modern evils.  The series will air on TVNZ (New Zealand) and Channel 7 (Australia).

Echo Bridge Entertainment adds the new family-targeted reality series, At The End of My Leash (39×30, seasons 1-3), to its offerings for international buyers at Mipcom.  The series features dog trainer and human life coach Brad Pattison as he provides his tough love training and counseling skills to correcting bad behavior between dog and their problematic owners.  The series airs in Canada on Slice and HGTV.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Walt Disney Records releases the original soundtrack CD High School Musical 3: Senior Year on October 21, just three days before the feature film, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, opens in theaters on October 24.  The soundtrack features all original songs from a range of writers/composers, including Matthew Gerrard and Robbie Nevil, Jamie Houston, and Andy Dodd and Adam Watts (all contributed to previous HSM scores).

Chop Shop Records and Atlantic Records will release Twilight  Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, the soundtrack to the new Summit Entertainment film Twilight, on November 4.  Based on Stephenie Meyer’s young adult Twilight book series, the feature film opens nationwide on November 21.

Grupo Televisa S.A. and United Media partner with Fundex Games to debut a toy line based on the primetime animated series Spanish-language series El Chavo.  Serving as the master toy licensee for El Chavo, Fundex games will release products for holiday 2008, which will be featured in toy end-caps, and other in-store promotion, at retailers nationwide.  Based on the very popular Mexican live-action series of the same name, El Chavo debuted in the US on Univision in January 2008.  A first season of the animated El Chavo will be released on DVD in the US in January 2009.

STONE SOUP

If you happen to be in NYC this Saturday, October 11, morning and have a kid 2-6 and are up really early (7:15a) you might want to head over FAO Schwarz (58/5th Ave) where CBS This Morning will shooting a live segment featuring Charlie and Lola at FAO Schwarz to celebrate Sibling (and best friends) Celebration Day and the new toy line from Kids Preferred based on the animated series.  Throughout the day FAO will celebrate the day with three events (11a, 1p and 3p), with a Charlie and Lola puppet show, card making, photo ops and the like.  Charlie and Lola will be featured in the FAO window all of October

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Chapman Entertainment appoints Cassandra Sananes as head of PR.  Sananes (nee Jephcott) was previously Account Director, Belson Bostock Communications.  Sananes will report to Melissa Brown, who has been upped to Director/Marketing, she had been head of Marketing.

Sommer Hixon is named Entertainment Rights as Sr. Director/Public Relations, North America.  Based in the NY office, Hixon will report to Nina Henderson.  Hixon joins ER from The Metropolitan Opera where she served as Press Director.  Previously she was VP/Public Relations, Rainbow Media/Cablevision.

Electronic Arts Inc. promotes Rod Humble to EVP and Head of The Sims Label, EA.  Humble takes over the role from Nancy Smith, who will manage special projects for The Sims Label until she takes up her new executive role at EA.  An 18-year industry veteran, Humble joined the label and EA in 2004.  Prior to that he was VP/Product Development, Sony Online Entertainment where he headed the EverQuest studio.

Imax Corporation appoints Julian Stanford, GM/Theatre Development, Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA).  Based in London, Stanford will report directly to Larry O’Reilly, EVP/Theatre Development.  Stanford joins Imax from Aristocrat Technologies.  He was previously head of sales/EMEA, United International Pictures, and prior to that as Managing Director/EMEA, MGM Home Entertainment
