Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 7, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Lassie is set to return in the new 3D CGI animated series Lassie and Friends (52×11), as DQ Entertainment (DQE) enters into a co-production deal with France’s Super Prod and Story Board Animation in association with broadcaster TF1 (France).  DQE is co-developing the new series with Classic Media UK and co-production partners German’s ZDF Group, which holds the German and German-speaking European rights.  Targeted to K5-10, the new Lassie and Friends features Lassie speaking for the first time, but only the audience and animal friends hear her actual thoughts, the rest of the humans, including her owner Zoe, rely on her famous persuasive bark.  The series is slated to be available by the end of 2012.  Super Prod takes the rights for French-speaking Europe (France and domestic territories, Monaco, Andorra, French-speaking Switzerland and French-speaking Belgium) and exploitation of the French version of the series worldwide.  Created by author Eric Knight, the character of Lassie first appeared in a short story in the Saturday Evening Post and later a novel, Lassie Come Home, in 1940, which was adapted in 1943 as an MGM feature film starring Roddy McDowall and Elizabeth Taylor.  Lassie went on to star in many other movies and both live-action and animated TV series.  Who else misses missing Roddy please raise your hand.


There’s a hole bunch of fun on Cartoon Network tonight!

First up at 7:30 PM, HOLE IN THE WALL, our all-new game show. Then it’s the explosive DUDE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN and DESTROY BUILD DESTROY. And by explosive, we mean things blow up. Especially the ratings.

Cartoon Network was #1 during prime (8-10p) on Wed. nights during the 09-10 season among B2-11 and B6-11.

The new preschool series Driver Dan’s Story Train is set to premiere exclusively in the US on Sprout on Monday, November 1 at 6:30p.  The series features the voice of Pat Monahan, lead signer for the band Train, as the voice of Driver Dan.  Described as a pop-up book come to life, the series focuses on a range of concepts, including sharing, tolerance and teamwork, as well as the importance of listening and stories.  A 24/7 TV, on demand and online destination, PBS Kids Sprout is a joint venture between Comcast, Hit Entertainment, PBS and Sesame Workshop.

Disney Channel will premiere the newest Disney-Pixar Cars Toons short tomorrow Friday, October 8 at 9:30p.  Directed by John Lasseter, co-directed by Rob Gibbs, and featuring music composed by Mark Mothersbaugh, the animated short will also air on Disney XD on Friday, October 15 at 7:27p.

Cartoon Network will premiere Robotomy on Monday, October 25 at 8:45p, following MAD.  A quarter-hour series, Robotomy revolves around two outsider teen high school droids, who want to fit in and yet who are only slightly less horrific than the ultra-powerful robots that populate their planet, Killglobe.  The voice-over cast features Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, King of Queens), John Gemberling, Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Lewis Black (Daily Show), Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse), rapper Lil Jon, and Gilbert Gottfried and Lisa Lampanelli.  Created by Michael Buckley (N.E.R.D.S., The Sisters Grimm) and Joe Deasy, Robotomy is produced at New York World Leaders Entertainment.

Cartoon Network celebrates Ben 10: Ultimate Alien around the world on-air, online and in stores this Sunday, October 10, 2010 (aka 10/10/10) with a Ben 10: Ultimate Marathon from 3p-7p, which leads into a hour-long premiere of two Ben10: Ultimate Alien episodes 7-8p.  Promotional support includes:

  • Viewers in the US can enter a watch and win sweepstakes on October 10 by submitting codes that will appear in the bottom corner of the screen during the marathon to from 3p11:59p.
  • Each day this week leading up to the marathon, new robot versions of series characters will be released online, while Ultimate Humungousaur will be unlocked for fans to play.  Cartoon Network TKO: Titanic Kungfubot Offensive, a free real-time multiplayer game features robot version of characters from the network’s series.
  • Cartoon Network will also feature Ben 10 At New York Comic Con in New York City this weekend in a range of ways  including the showing of a previously unseen episode of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien with voiceover dialogue performed live by Yuri Lowenthal (Ben), Greg Cipes (Kevin) and Ashley Johnson (Gwen).
  • Bandai America, the master toy partner for the Ben 10 franchise, gets the holiday season under way this Sunday too by launching its Ben 10: Ultimate Alien Go-Kart Sweepstakes (
  •, which will run for 10 weeks.  Elsewhere, Bandai is also launching a new Ben 10: Ultimate Alien toy range for the Asia Pacific this Sunday, which includes the debut of a set of gold, limited edition alien figures exclusive to Asia Pacific.  This line also features the latest alien morphing device, the Ultimatrix.

BBC Worldwide‘s international preschool channel, CBeebies, acquires two series from DHX Media.  Beginning in early 2011, CBeebies will air the first three seasons of Grandpa In My Pocket (52×11 and 13×12) for the first time in Africa, Asia and Poland, with dirtgirlworld (52×11) debuts in Africa and Poland.

In other CBeebies news, this week the preschool channel launches the new series Penelope K for the US Hispanic market on Dish Network’s DishLatino package.  Additionally, the network will host a Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service (Pat, el Cartero: Servicio Especial) this Saturday, October 9, 9a-11a.

Turkish broadcasters ATV acquires the tween-targeted action/adventure series Saladin (13×26) from Malaysia’s Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC).  Based on the 12the Century statesman, Saladin, the series is a co-production between MDeC and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel.

Poptropica ( ), a kid-targeted virtual world, will feature the Peanuts characters in the new Great Pumpkin Island, which launches this month.  Based on Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts comic, Great Pumpkin Island features the characters in this new quest, which features scenes form the holiday TV special, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.  Available to Poptropica members with ‘Early Access” now, the site’s 15th island will be available to the public on October 14.  This year marks the 60th anniversary of Peanuts.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP) enters into a new three-year international partnership with Eaglemoss Publishing Group to develop partworks (serialized publications) and press collections based on 35+ Nickelodeon properties for publication around the world (excluding the US).  The agreement will include the development of a minimum of four new products each year, two of which will be traditional partworks for testing.  The first products under the deal, the Dora the Explorer Little Cooks Collection, currently being tested in the UK, is a cooking and picnic collectible set (includes a silicon bake ware and Dora plate and cutlery set) with an accompanying magazine featuring stories, activities and games and nutritional recipes.

4Kids Entertainment and WordWorld, the multiplatform preschool literacy-centric property, enter into a yearlong promotional partnership with Subway Restaurants.  Kicking off this month at participating Subway locations in North America, the promotion features a WordWorld board book and meal bag upon request with the purchase of a Subway Fresh Fit For Kids Meal through December 2011 (or while supplies last).  A French language version of the book and meal bag will be available in French-speaking Canada.  The promotion will be supported at ( ) and via in-restaurant signage.  WordWorld can be seen in the US on PBS Kids, and in Canada on TVO (Ontario) and Knowledge Networks (British Columbia).

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and Mega Brands ink a worldwide licensing deal to develop construction toys based on the Cartoon Network series Generator Rex.  The new Mega Brands’ Generator Rex toy line is slated to launch in the US in fall 2011, followed by other territories.  A Cartoon Network original action/adventure series, Generator Rex is created by Man of Action (Ben 10 franchise) and produced at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank.

Bulldog Licensing enters into a deal with licensing goods specialist Bluebird Brands, which will produce a line of products based on the Goochicoo property.  The new product line will feature items including a ‘my first range… (which could include boxes for first teeth or locks of hair), Mother’s/Father’s Day mugs, luggage and travel accessories, sun shades and ‘baby on board’ stickers.  Bluebird Brands joins a groin g list of other Goochicoo licensees, including Tommee Tippee (melamine products), Izziwotnot (bedding), and Moonpig (greeting cards), among others.


Barbara Marcus, former President/Scholastic Children’s Book Publishing and Distribution and EVP/Scholastic, joins Open Road Integrated Media as an adviser.  Marcus will help move Open Road as it enters the kid’s market, as well as help further the company’s international business development and consult on other issues.  A digital content company, Open Road Integrated Media publishes and markets ebooks by creating connections between authors and their audiences.
