10/06/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, October 6, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Everybody doesn’t really hate Chris at all; in fact, they like him enough that UPN has decided to keep him around for an entire season.  Surprise Surprise. Everybody Hates Chris is from Chris Rock Enterprises Inc. and Paramount Network Television.

Tonight’s Premieres:
A&E:    The First 48 at 10p
MTV:    Making the Band 3* MORE GOOD STUFF *You’ve heard the rumor – now it’s official.  King World, Harpo Prods and Scripps Network have signed Rachael Ray to host a daily, one hour talk show for a syndication launch for Fall 2006. The series will be shot in NYC, and distributed by King World.  Ray will add this new project to her current deal with Food Network where she is the host of four series, 30-Minute Meals, $40 a Day, Inside Dish and Tasty Travels.

If the NHL hockey schedule isn’t enough to satisfy your hockey craving, you can also find college hockey (sometimes a better game!) on CSTV on Friday nights.  The schedule begins this Friday with Quinnipiac playing Michigan at 8p.  Weekly game lead-in is CSTV’s The #1 College Hockey Show at 7p.

The Sundance Channel returns with its Friday night Midnight Snack movies at 1230a with host Alan Cumming, beginning December 2.  Kicking off the new season of movies is The Repo Man.  Other titles coming this season are Orgazmo, Jesus Christ Superstar, and The Thing.

VH1 will launch a new elimination-based unscripted series called But Can They Sing? on October 30th at 10p.  The show pits nine celebrities against one another, each trying to prove not only that they can sing, but also sing better than the other 8 celebs. Viewers will have a chance to vote for who stays and who goes.  The 9 celebs agreeing to play are Morgan Fairchild, Joe Pantoliano, Bai Ling,  Antonio Sabato, Jr, Michael Copon (“One Tree Hill”), model Kim Alexis, Carmine Gotti, heavyweight champion Larry Holmes and Latin entertainer/journalist Myrka Dellanos.

If you’re feeling a little lost after the lengthy baseball playoffs on Fox, and wonder where we left off on Prison Break, no worries for you.  FX will air the first seven episodes in a mini-marathon method on Sunday, October 23 from 12n-7p, just one night before the series resumes with new episodes on Fox at 9p.

Federal Hill Communications has signed an agreement with CinemaNow, Inc., to distribute extreme sports clips on a non-exclusive basis via cinemanow.com.  Users will have access to content on a rental, subscription or download-to-own basis.  Additionally, all videos are available in multiple formats, allowing users to play back on Smartphones, MS Windows mobile-based devices, as well your old standby – the PC.

Verizon Communications Inc. signed a carriage agreement with MTV Networks and BET to bring in both networks on its Verizon FiOS TV service. The service will also include the newly-added hi-def network MHD. Also included in the deal are MTV’s VOD content, digital and audio radio channels and online content for both its MTV and Nickelodeon brands (including MTV.com’s MTV Overdrive and Nick.com’s TurboNick). When the FiOS TV service launched on September 22, it included programming content from A&E, TBS, Discovery Networks, NBC Universal Cable, Showtime and Starz Entertainment Group, and most recently Scripps Networks, among others.

 * NEW ORDERS / CASTING / DEVELOPMENT / PRODUCTION *NBC has ordered up a new Dick Wolf series. To Wolf’s credit, this show’s title does not start with the words “Law and Order.”  NBC ordered 13 episodes of Conviction, a courtroom drama focusing on young NY assistant district attorneys, from Wolf Films and NBC Universal.  NBC is looking at midseason as a possible premiere for the new drama.

Sci Fi Channel has ordered a pilot for a project from Nicholas Cage’s Saturn Films and Lions Gate Television called The Dresden Files, says Variety.  The project is based on the novels by Jim Butcher about a wizard, Harry Dresden, who is also a Chicago based private detective.  Production on the pilot is scheduled to begin this fall, and if it goes to series it could be on the air by next summer.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *Denise Gough has joined the Scripps Networks as a Director/Legal Affairs. Her responsibilities extend to production and talent agreements, international licensing agreements, and advising on various legal issues. Denise reports to Chuck Rosenzweig, SVP/Legal Affairs

HBO has named Jim Moloshok as its President/Media Ventures, a newly created position.  Jim will look to expand HBO’s programming content to various platforms including the internet and wireless mobile devices.

Gemstar-TV Guide International, Inc. has promoted Scott Crystal to President/TV Guide Publishing Group.  He will remain in NY and report to CEO Rich Battista, and Executive Chairman Anthea Disney.  Crystal will oversee all of the publishing group’s business units including circulation, advertising sales, operations, finance, and production. Ian Birch, Editorial Director for the publishing group and editor-in-chief of TV Guide magazine, will also report directly to Battista and Disney.

* RATINGS *Tuesday — A18-49 Analysis: NBC led on Tuesday night, according to final ratings from Nielsen Media Research, posting an overall 4.9/13 A18-49.  CBS was #2 with a 4.0/10, followed by ABC 3.8/10, Fox 3.4/9, WB 2.5/6 and UPN 1.0/3.  At 8p NCIS was in front with a 4.4/12.  Rodney premiered on ABC at 830p with a 2.8/7, dropping one share point from its lead-in, According to Jim. The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1683-A group of Mennonites arrive in present-day Philadelphia, among the first Germans to settle in the American colonies.  The group had been offered a land grant by William Penn and freedom to practice their religion.  Naming their first settlement Germantown, this group was the entering wedge of a huge German migration to America.  Their arrival was formally commemorated in 1987 with Congressional passage of an act naming October 6 as German-American Day.
