Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10.31.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 31, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

Intel’s dreams of becoming a star on the little screen may be coming to an end. According to CNet, Intel Media is in late negotiations with Verizon to hand over control of its anticipated web-TV service. Intel announced earlier this year it would be launching a service called OnCue that would offer live TV, VOD and content streaming. Last month Intel pushed the product back to a 2014 release.

CONTENT MEDIA

Exclusive: Crackle, the multi-platform entertainment network, today announced that it will be airing Sony Pictures TV horror game show Release The Hounds today, just in time for Halloween. Crackle will be the exclusive SVOD distributor for the full one-hour episode.

The newbie to late night talk shows, Comedy Central’s @Midnight, is scoring big ratings on TV and Twitter. The show, hosted by Chris Hardwick and produced by Funny or Die, was the most-watched late-night talk show from men ages 18-34 and 18-24 (260,876) right behind The Daily Show with Jon Stewart  and ahead of TBS’s Pete Holmes Show. Nielsen’s SocialGuide also rated it the top entertainment series in its new Late Night Fringe category in four of its first six episodes. A new episode airs every Monday through Thursday at midnight.

Fox and music discovery app Shazam partnered up for Fox’s Almost Human to air nine “Shazamable” promos during last nights Game 6 of the World Series. Viewers were able to Shazam a promo to unlock an eight-minute extended scene from the show. Also, Shazam will send notifications to all of its users to tune into the show’s premiere on Nov. 17.

Emmy-nominated and partner with the upcoming YouTube Music Awards, What’s Trending, is broadcasting a live preview show in London today at noon. It will air on www.whatstrending.com, and feature commentary from YouTube stars and special performances.

Observer.com launched a new animated web series called Founder Stories yesterday. The show focuses on the founders of modern big brands like Foursquare or Indiegogo. Two episodes are available on the site, and the third will be released next Wednesday.

In 2 short weeks, we’ll announce the finalists for the inaugural Cynopsis Digital Model D Awards at the Grand Hyatt in New York City! Check out the impressive list of finalists and register your team today for the November 12th event: http://www.cynopsisdigitalsummit.com/model-d-awards/

MOBILE GAMING + APPS

Twitter’s 140-characters got more media centric yesterday, as the Twitterverse now automatically shows photos and videos within tweets, without having to click-through a link.
In other words: This move is a result of competition from Instagram as well as a way for Twitter to appeal to a wider audience and advertisers before its IPO debut.

Google+ is pumping up its photo-enhancement features to make it easier for users to store and search for photos, according to the company’s product brief, which was released yesterday. It also made some minor improvements to the video Hangout feature.

NBA Digital updated its NBA Game Time app yesterday, with a redesign, and the ability to watch live games for those subscribed to NBA League Pass. The free app is available for Apple and Android devices, Roku, and both PlayStation and Xbox consoles.

TECHNOLOGY

Amazon’s TV over-the-top device will not be found in anyone’s stocking this year. All Things D reports the company has pushed back the release date of its box until Spring 2014, because Amazon was not happy with the device’s performance. Amazon originally hoped for a holiday launch to compete with Apple TV and Roku.

Google Glass got its first update yesterday, including a removable ear-bud as well as the option to support prescription lenses. Currently, this model is only available for Google Glass Explorers for $1,500; a more mainstream version is expected to go on sale next year.

Facebook is now testing a cursor-tracker that would bring in more data from its users. The Wall Street journal reports the data would collect how long a user’s cursor hovered over parts of the site, or if the newsfeed is visible at any moment on a user’s mobile device. The data could then be used for more product development or for advertisers to better target consumers.

RESEARCH

Red Bull took YouTube’s top brand based on number of subscribers, according to a Mashable and Statista report released yesterday. Red Bull flew above all other brands in the top ten list, with almost three million subscribers. PlayStation took second with 2,032,966 subscribers, then Rockstar Games at 1,756,925, Apple at 1,696,123 and GoProCamera in fifth at 1,286,604. Rovio Entertainment, Ubisoft, Nike Football, DC Shoes and Pepsi filled the remaining spots on the list.

Facebook’s third quarter report revealed a total of $2.02 billion in revenue at 25 cents a share, up 60 percent from just a year ago. The biggest sweet spot came from its mobile ad revenue, which made up 49 percent of its overall ad earnings.

DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

“Theater owners stifle innovation at every turn,” Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said during the keynote for the ninth annual 2013 Film Independent Forum in Los Angeles. Sarandos discussed the media’s changing business model and how he thinks theater owners are destroying distribution and movies to make up for massive marketing and production budgets. Within the 40-minute address he also spoke about how Netflix may move into the big-budget movie space by releasing its own original movies in theatres and on Netflix at the same time. Check out the speech at www.cynopsis.com.
