~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Several U.S. Senators, headed by Arlen Specter (R-PA) delivered a letter to Roger Goodell, NFL commissioner late Tuesday, calling out the League for airing specific games only on the NFL Network starting November 6 and saying the NFL Network is showing an “interest in moving toward a pay television model.” In response to the Senator’s letter, the NFL Network issued a statement assuring Sen. Specter of its goal to provide NFL games to a national audience. The statement further mentions the NFL Network’s current struggle with major cable operators, chiefly Comcast and Time Warner Cable who have limited NFL Network’s carriage to more pricey tiers. The NFL network also asked for Sen. Specter’s help on negotiations with Comcast and Time Warner and others so the upcoming eight-game package will be available to all viewers. Recently, the FCC Media Bureau ruled Comcast has discriminated and retaliated against the NFL Network thus rebuking consumers.

Great American Country (GAC) will bring back the series Introducing …, the network’s look at emerging country music artists, this Saturday at 1030p. The first artist profiled is Jamey Johnson hailing from Montgomery, AL the home of legendary country star Hank Williams, Sr. who is being called “this generation’s next Hank Williams.”

Super Tuesday Election Night Coverage:

  • BBC World News will provide additional coverage November 4 across 166 PBS stations nationwide. In addition to the usual 30m broadcast, BBC World News will have a one-hour special starting at 2a ET showing up-to-date results and bringing in its special correspondents from battleground states. BBC World News will also offer special election results programming to its stations throughout the evening.
  • TV One opens its election night coverage at 7p ET with the live Election Night 08: A Vote for Change special. TV One will have correspondents in various locations including the headquarters of Barack Obama and John McCain; at the TV One Election Newsroom; and based at the AP’s national vote epicenter. The live reporting will be headed by Arthur Fennel, Joe Madison and Jacque Reid and the trio will be joined by analysts such as pollster Shawnta Walcott, commentators Michael Eric Dyson and Tom Joyner and CNN analyst Roland Martin who will be reporting live from CNN Election Headquarters in New York.

A&E Network introduces a new reality crime show with Manhunters: Fugitive Task Force premieres December 9 at 10p. Viewers will follow agents of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force NY/NJ Division based in New York City as they ferret out the most violent criminals. Twenty-one 30m episodes will be available to the network from Stars & Stripes Media, Inc.

VH1 Classic debuts a new series taking a look at the heavy metal music genre over the last 40 years. The Metal Show opens November 15 at 11p, and features three hosts  Eddie Trunk, Jim Florentine and Don Jamieson as well as special guests who will all debate about which bands remain on top of the pack and which have gone by the wayside. The 30m show is produced by VH1 Classic.

USA Network is switching the eighth season premiere of Law & Order: Criminal Intent to first quarter 2009, allowing the network to air 16 episodes without a break.

~ DISTRIBUTION, CLEARANCE & CARRIAGE ~

LIN TV and Time Warner Cable hashed out a new retransmission-consent agreement following a nearly month-long blackout. Fifteen LIN TV stations (including three under Bright House Networks) will have their broadcast signals returned to 1.5 million subscribers effective immediately. In early October, TWC pulled the 15 stations off of its and Bright House Networks’ systems in Austin, Buffalo, Columbus, Dayton, Ft. Wayne, Green Bay, Indianapolis, Mobile, Springfield, MA, Terri Haute and Toledo once the expiration date of the old transmission-consent pact with LIN TV was reached. TWC also refused LIN TV’s 30 cents per station license fee. Financial terms of this new deal were not disclosed.

DIRECTV, Inc. added History en espanol on DIRECTV Mas, the satellite provider’s Spanish and English-language service. The 24-hour History en espanol, offering programming from the U.S. and Latin America will now be available to distributors and subscribers nationwide.

Retro Television Network (RTN) made an agreement with Newport Television LLC for its programming to air on WAWS/Jacksonville and WLMT/Memphis.

This day in History:  1938 – Millions of radio listeners were shocked when radio news alerts announced the arrival of Martians. Though what the radio listeners heard was a portion of Orson Welles’ adaptation of the well known book (or perhaps not nearly so well known before this than after), War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells.
