Lifetime Television is turning pink with a new reality competition series Blush: The Search for the Next Great Make-Up Artist starting November 11 at 10p. Over six one-hour episodes, contestants will compete for a professional contract from Max Factor, a cash prize of $100,000 and the chance to do the make-up for an In Style photo shoot. Vanessa Marcil will host the series with In Style’s fashion director Hal Rubenstein and professional make-up artist/author Joanna Schlip as judges. Well-known make-up artist to supermodels, Charlie Green will be mentor to the players. Similar to most competition series, the contestants will live together in Los Angeles while battling through various challenges as one by one they are eliminated. IMG Entertainment and connective tissue, the branded entertainment unit of MediaVest, are co-producing for Lifetime. Bravo takes a bite out of the Big Apple for the fifth season of Top Chef premiering November 12 at 10p. Seventeen new contestants will cut, chop and create culinary delights to impress the judges headed by Tom Colicchio, chef/owner of Craft Restaurants and Gail Simmons of Food & Wine Magazine, along with new judge Toby Young, food critic/author. Padma Lakshmi will once again host and throughout the season celebrities such as Martha Stewart, Foo Fighters, Jean-Georges, Eric Ripert, Rocco DiSpirito, Wylie Dufresne, Jean-Christophe Novelli and Natasha Richardson will make appearances. Magical Elves produces Top Chef: New York. Showtime will premiere The United States of Tara on January 18 at 10p following the sixth season opener of The L Word at 9p and prior to the second season debut of The Secret Diary of a Call Girl at 11p, cites Variety. The CW gave a put pilot commitment for The Graysons, a one-hour series about the early days of Dick “DJ” Grayson before he becomes Batman’s sidekick Robin, reports Variety. This project is the next franchise from DC Comics produced for TV by Warner Bros. TV. Also involved is Wonderland Sound and Vision.
Atlas Media Corp. received a fourth season renewal order for Dr. G: Medical Examiner from Discovery Health Channel. Twenty-one new episodes will be produced, taking the total number of series episodes to 70. Jeff Rake also has an untitled dramedy in association with Mitch Hurwitz picked up by FOX, says THR. For this project, Sony TV and Tantamount will produced the one-hour high-energy action concept surrounding the government’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and a Pentagon inventor who starts using his creations in secret. FOX gave a script commitment with penalty. HBO is teaming with TV veteran Norman Lear on a drama series project tentatively titled Everybody Hurts set in the 1970s about a family running a pro wrestling company in New York, according to THR. Aaron Blitzstein will write the project while Lear’s Act III Productions produces with Lear and Lara Bergthold as executive producers. ~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~
CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Fair use of online content can go too far, apparently. NBC asked YouTube to pull a mashup ad yesterday from the Obama campaign, according to reports, that combines NBC and MSNBC news footage to imagine a future where John McCain wins the election in November. NBC also asked the campaign to quit using the ad, which has been posted on VoteForChange.com and has been racking up thousands of views on political sites such as DailyKos as an embed. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Jack Black and Angelina Jolie return for DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda sequel, which is scheduled for release on June 3, 2011. The movie will be produced in stereoscopic 3D and is to be released into Imax theatres as well. Kung Fu Panda 2 will again be written and co-produced by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger. Simon Philips advanced to President/Worldwide Consumer Products with Marvel Entertainment, Inc. in addition to continuing in his position as Marvel’s Head/Worldwide Animation. In this new capacity, Simon will lead the company’s international consumer products expansion and will be involved with increasing Marvel’s direct to retail partnerships and nurturing alliances with major retailers, growing Marvel’s video game and wireless licensing divisions and engaged with new themed entertainment park partners. Simon will now be based at Marvel’s New York office. Moreover, Paul Gitter, President/Consumer Products, North America will continue to oversee the Marvel’s U.S. and Canadian consumer products division and will now manage the same areas in Central and South America.
Meredith Corporation upped Darrin McDonald to VP/GM of KVVU/Las Vegas and Patrick McCreery to VP/GM at KPTV-KPDX/Portland, OR. Both Darrin and Patrick previously served as Acting GMs of their respective stations. Peter Gaffney was upgraded to SVP/Programming Strategy, Scheduling and Acquisitions for History and History International. Peter will be charged with increasing the network’s ratings, impressions and viewer loyalty. He will report to Nancy Dubuc, EVP/GM, History. ABC News promoted Al Prieto to VP/ABC NewsOne and David Reiter to VP/Newsgathering. Al will lead the daily operations for ABC’s affiliate news service that supports more than 200 stations and clients including ABC Owned Television Stations and affiliates, BBC, Fuji TV, Associated Press Television and Univision. David continues to spearhead ABC’s newsgathering functions in addition to assigning correspondents, produces and crews among other duties. Both report to Kate O’Brian, SVP/News.
