Cynopsis: Kids!

10/02/08

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 2, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Jack Black and Angelina Jolie return for DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda sequel, which is scheduled for release on June 3, 2011.  The movie will be produced in stereoscopic 3D and is to be released into Imax theatres as well.  Kung Fu Panda 2 will again be written and co-produced by Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger.  Melissa Cobb will produce.  The movie will be directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson, head of story on the first movie, and will be produced by Melissa Cobb.

9 Story Entertainment acquires the rights to adapt author Tish Cohen‘s kids book, The Invisible Rules of The Zoe Lama, into a live-action TV series.  The story revolves around Zoe, a seventh-grader who until now has been the school’s go-to-girl for everything (fashion, friendship advice, teachers etc).  Things change when some of her advice doesn’t work as planned.  Cohen’s debut novel, Townhouse, is currently in theatrical development at Fox Studios with Scott Free Productions with John Carney (Once) set to direct.

MORE KIDS STUFF

PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go! celebrate the holiday season with themed programming.  To help kids/families make their way through the festival of eating this holiday season, Sid the Science Kid episodes October 20-24 will offer information about what happens when you eat too many sweets or don’t brush your teeth, in addition to the importance of staying active and washing your hands.  Parents will find related information and activities online at PBS ParentsHalloween programming, which will air on the very day, October 31, features episodes of Martha Speaks, Super Why, Wordworld, Cyberchase, Arthur and Maya & Miguel that will focus on discovering that some of the things that the characters think are scary, aren’t actually so scary.  Various Halloween activities, games, masks, recipes etc are available at www.pbskids.org/halloween.

Dolphin Entertainment completes new distribution deals for its tween-targeted live-action TV movie property, Roxy Hunter.  Picking up the rights to the first two Roxy Hunter movies are, Mediaset’s Italia Uno (Italy), Venevision (Venezuela), Canal 11 (Honduras) and Canal 10 and 2 (Nicaragua).  Additionally, the third and fourth titles in the series have completed production and are slated to bow on Nickelodeon in the US later this year.

The Fremantle Company will feature its new animated acquisition Fantastic Tales at Mipcom.  A collection of six movies Fantastic Tales shot in a mix of 2D and 3D animation and featuring the writings and characters of H.G. Wells, Robert Louis Stevenson, Arthur Conan Doyle, Cervantes, Stoker, Melville, Mallory and Verne.  Targeted to K7-12 and families, the movies include Leonardo and the Time Machine, which centers on a young Leonardo Da Vinci who, with the help of Dr. Watson and H.G. Wells’ Time Machine, takes off after Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde who have taken off with his model.  Fantastic Tales is a Canadian/European Union co-production by Canada’s Kaleidoscope Entertainment and Comet Entertainment for distribution by Fremantle.

Among the properties Cookie Jar Entertainment will showcase at Mipcom this month are new original animated series and a special:

  • Metajets (40×30) is a mixed 2D and CGI animated series about flying aces competing on the Aeronautical Racing Circuit, secretly battling for air supremacy.  A co-production with Sunwoo, Metajets debuts on Teletoon (Canada) in 2009.
  • Noonbory & the Super 7 (26×30) revolves a group of small creatures called Borys, led by Noonbory, who use their keen senses, imagination and teamwork to solve everyday problems.  A Cookie Jar and Daewon Media co-production, the series will air in Canada on BBC Kids, Knowledge Network, Access Television and SCN.
  • Gotta Catch Santa Claus is a CGI holiday special about a 12-year-old boy that sets out to catch Santa, voiced by William Shatner, in order to prove he exists.  Working against the boy is Santa’s nemesis that wants Santa for himself.  A Cookie Jar and Enemes co-production is set to air on Teletoon (Canada) for holiday 2008.

Viewers tuned into part one on Sept. 26 at 8p on Disney Channel and were then directed to go to Disney.com to watch part two, available exclusively online prior to its on-air debut the following night. During the period nearly 800,000 The Suite Life on Deck videos were streamed at Disney.com, which drew a record 4.2 million daily unique visitors on Sept. 27.
