Cynopsis: Kids!
10/27/11

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 27, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cartoon Network furthers its Stop Bullying: Speak Up campaign by teaming with Bitstrips, to invite kids to share ideas in their own comic strip creations as part of the Stop Bullying: Speak Up Comic Challenge ( www.stopbullyingcomics.com) this October and November, and in recognition of National Bullying Prevention Month (October). At the Stop Bullying: Speak Up Comic Challenge site folks can make comic strips without knowing how to draw (a plus for me).  Kids/adults/anyone start out by making themselves into a cartoon avatar and star in their own comic where they help resolve a bullying situation.  The comic strips can be shared in an online gallery, and the best entries will be published in a downloadable comic anthology.  So far 100,000 visitors have logged 1+ million page views and created 17,000+ comics on the site.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Vanguard Animation is teaming with Canada-based Arc Productions for Vanguard’s new CG 3D animated feature film The Nut House, per Variety.  Set to begin production in January 2012, The Nut House will be helmed by first time director Ross Venokur, who also wrote the script, along with John Rice who will also direct.  Producing the movie are John Williams (Shrek, Valiant, Space Chimps, On the Road) and John Stevenson (director of Kung Fu Panda).  SC Films International is handling with worldwide sales for The Nut Hose at the American Film Market (AFM, November 2-9, 2011 in Santa Monica).  Licensing veteran Geneva Wasserman will serve as an executive producer and also launch a global licensing and merchandising program for the movie.  The movie follows a recently escaped con-squirrel, Frankie, who must has to pull of the heist of the century, after he discovers that Nut House Nuts company has harvested the forest for its own commercial gain.  Frankie’s plan involves breaking into the high-security packaging plant and salvaging all the nuts, with the assistance of his trusty, right-hand porcupine Cody, and an elite team of forest dwellers, in order to save the forest and get back the girl of his dreams.

Comic book industry royal Stan Lee and his company POW! Entertainment enters into a partnership with Michael Eisner‘s indie studio Vuguru, to produce original digital content.  The deal will see POW! expand its storytelling into the digital world, and its efforts will be spearheaded by Scott Nocas, who has been helping build POW!’s digital strategy and helped bring this deal together.  No word yet on exactly who the content will be targeted to, but we can hope some will be for kids, tweens and families.  Vuguru was founded by Eisner’s Tornante Company and is backed by Canada’s Rogers Media.

LICENSING

Lawless Entertainment is appointed as the global representative for animation, licensing, merchandising and publishing for Superbike Sam and Tee hee, which are both owned by Big Giggles.  Superbike Sam follows the adventures of a friendly red motorbike and his friends who live near the racetrack.  Sam leads his friends as they solve everyday problems together and have fun.  Tee hee is a little girl with a big imagination and has a magic dress up box that has all sorts of costumes that transform and take her on adventures with her best friends.

Cookie Jar Entertainment and its licensing division, CPLG, have launched the new, and first, Richard Scarry’s Busytown toy line in partnership with The Bridge Direct.  Based on Scarry’s characters and vehicles, the Busytown toy line makes its US debut at Toys “R” US ( www.toysrus.com ) stores nationwide and at FAO Schwarz ( www.fao.com ) Fifth Avenue in NYC, as well as their respective websites.  The Richard Scarry’s Busytown toy line includes the Busytown Deluxe Town Hall Playset, the center of the Busytown Play System, which includes figures, roadways and playsets that can all fit together, and also comes with a DVD of the Busytown Mysteries TV series.  The Bridge Direct also produced Busytown Playsets, plush, vehicles and figure packs.  CPLG already launched licensed products from partners including: The Wonder Forge (board games); Cardinal Industries (puzzles); Simon & Schuster (books); Deco Pac (cake decorations); and Fifth Sun (junior apparel).

V&S Entertainment, producer of the HD CGI animated preschool series Everything’s Rosie, inks a licensee deal with Brand International Group for a line of Everything’s Rosie footwear for the UK.  Set to launch for spring 2012, the new line of preschool-targeted Everything’s Rosie footwear will include slippers, wellington boots, sneakers, fashion shoes and summer footwear including clogs and sandals.  Another recent licensing deal for Everything’s Rosie was completed with VMC Accessories for Rosie-branded dress-up and accessories.  There are 25+ other licensees on board for the property across Europe. The series broadcast in the UK on CBeebies.  Everything’s Rosie has also been acquired by broadcasters including RTVE (Spain), France Television (France), Canal Panda (Portugal) and RAI YOYO (Italy).  A third series of the show is currently in production and set to air in 2012.

MORE KIDS STUFF

CBBC (UK) is set to launch its new series Driving Academy (10×30) this fall.  The series is designed to make better drivers by challenging tweens and parents to learn to drive together.  Hosted by Joe Swash, Driving Academy follows four tweens and their parents as together they take an intensive master driving class aimed at making them better drivers and they even manage to have fun.  Under the watchful eye of Approved Driving Instructors, the teams will take part in a series of driving challenges aimed at preparing them for the ultimate test at the end of the series.  Both the kids and their parents will use dual-controlled cars, guided by the show’s road safety experts, Sandra Dodson (Deputy Chief Examiner from the Driving Standards Agency) and Vicky Lovell (Approved Driving Instructor, grade 6).  The series also features a team of Crash Test Dummies, including Mr Crash who spends every day getting distracted at the wheel and showing how it definitely should not be done.  Driving Academy is produced by indie Lucky Day, and executive produced by Melissa Hardinge for CBBC and Damon Pattison for Lucky Day.

ABC announces highlights of its upcoming November sweeps programming, which includes two kid/family-targeted Halloween specials.  The network will air the classic animated Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts special, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, tonight at 8p.  The program will air with Spanish audio via SAP.  ABC will also air the animated special Scared Shrekless on Halloween, Monday, October 31, 7:58-8:30p.

Beginning tomorrow, Friday, October 28, 2011, Sesame Street kicks off its new Put Down the Pacifier weeklong promotional initiative, which is designed to help younger kids through the often difficult milestone of giving up their pacifier and becoming a big kid.  The effort, which provides parents with daily tips and video clips from Elmo to help with the transition, culminates on November 4 for Put Down the Pacifier Day.  On Tuesday, November 1, Sesame Workshop and Warner Home Video will release the all-new DVD Bye Bye, Pacifier! Big Kid Stories with Elmo.  The DVD features Elmo helping kids through various childhood milestones like giving up a pacifier, learning to ride a tricycle and getting a first haircut.  The title also includes Elmo singing the new song Big Kid Too, as well as bonus material such as a 19-page PDF story and activity book and class clip “Proud.”  Additionally, families can follow the countdown to Put Down the Pacifier Day at www.sesamestreet.org/pacifier, which goes live Friday as well as, and on Sesame Street’s Facebook page.
