10/26/06
Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 26, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Starting November 30, NBC will revamp its Thursday primetime schedule as Scrubs returns and 30 Rock is added, making a two-hour comedy block. The Thursday night line-up will be My Name Is Earl at 8p, The Office at 830p, Scrubs at 9p and 30 Rock at 930p and ER at 10p. Beginning November 22, NBC will air various specials on Wednesday nights from 8-9p that will soon be announced. Also on November 16, NBC will air super-sized 40-minute episodes of My Name Is Earl, The Office and 30 Rock. Without any further mention of 20 Good Years, one has to assume it will not be returning to the schedule after it gets bumped on 11/22.
And ABC has once again displaced Extreme Makeover, removing it after just one play on Friday at 8p, and replacing it once again with repeats of Grey’s Anatomy.
News Corp. and Nielsen Media Research have apparently kissed and made up with the signing of an 8-year agreement that brings to an end the Personal PeopleMeters technology vs. urban market audience measurements debate and the Don’t Count Us Out pressure group. Nielsen will allocate $50 million to programs that help determine counting accuracies connected to youth and minority groups. It will provide audience measurement services for 49 News Corp. TV entities, consolidating over 150 individual agreements between the companies. The agreement includes FOX Broadcasting Company, FOX News Channel, FX, SPEED, National Geographic Channel, Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Sports Net, Fox Sports en Espanol, DIRECTV, Twentieth Television and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation.
BBC America has made recent deals with Buena Vista and Sony for movie packages from both distributors. The upcoming titles from Buena Vista include Calendar Girls, The Quiet American, Kinky Boots, Essex Boys and Ethan Frome, and the films from Sony are Four Weddings and a Funeral and Shallow Grave.
ION Media Networks, Inc., owner of the largest local station group an the i network reaching more than 92 million homes, has reached an agreement with RHI Entertainment whereby RHI will be its exclusive program content provider for Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, from 7-11p, for a total of 12 hours per week. The revenue share deal is initially for a two-year period beginning July 1, 2007. The terms of the agreement also include the U.S. broadcast premiere of a minimum of six new RHI productions each year. Both companies will work together on program scheduling, the development of on-air promotions and advertising sales strategy.
TBS and MySpace are co-hosting an online comedy competition, The Stand Up or Sit Down Comedy Challenge, inviting amateur comics to submit video samples through the MySpace profile at http://myspace.com/StandUpOrSitDown. Starting this week, visitors will have the chance to vote for the top finalists. Five comedians will ultimately have the opportunity to perform in a one-hour special hosted by George Lopez, filmed at The Comedy Festival in Las Vegas. The special will debut on TBS November 17 at 10p. Further voting via MySpace will occur after the TV special, and the one winner will be announced live on TBS during the network’s simulcast of Comic Relief 2006 on November 18. The overall winner will receive $50,000, a development deal and additional prizes. The comedy challenge special is produced by Levity Productions.
Comedy Central will premiere two new broadband series, starting with Good God, which begins today. The six-episode live action comedy is similar to The Office but with God as the boss, and his staff of angels including Gabriel, Associate Archangel; Heidi, Angel of Heavenly Affairs; Michael, Managing Archangel; and Death, the Angel of Death. The second series, Baxter & McGuire, debuts November 6 and runs over eight weeks. From the co-creator of The King of Queens, Baxter & McGuire is an animated comedy about two close buddies who also happen to be testicles. Both series can be found at comedycentral.com.

Fox has ordered up a new drama project about a bounty hunter who travels the globe looking for bad guys, while at the same time trying to deal with his own fear of foreign people and places. According to Variety, the project is from Vince McKewin and Sandy Grushow, Phase Two Prods and 20th Century Fox TV.
FX has a project in development, currently called Charming, CA, about a violent outlaw motorcycle gang. The project is from Art and John Linson and Kurt Sutter, the latter being the exec producer of FX’s series The Shield, and he will write the pilot script of this new project.
