Cynopsis: Kids!
10/26/06
Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 26, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Marvel Studios has inked a deal with No Equal Entertainment, a Vancouver based production company, to develop a live-action sci-fi/adventure TV series based on Marvel’s superhero Moon Knight. Created by writer Doug Moench and artist Don Perlin, Moon Knight, aka Marc Spector, made his first appearance in Marvel Comics’ Werewolf by Night in summer 1975. An adventurer, Moon Knight began life as Marc Spector the wayward son of European immigrants to America and went on to number of vocations including a US Marine, boxer, mercenary, CIA operative and following an encounter with the Egyptian god of vengeance and the moon deity Konshu, he became the super hero Moon Knight.
Channel One has teamed with ABC News Now, the 24/7 digital channel, to create content for Be Seen and Be Heard, a new weekly student-generated program that will air Fridays at 12:30p on ABC News Now. Channel One will invite its student viewers to create and submit their own video content featuring their response to Channel One’s current affairs/political programming. Students will also be able to submit their thoughts/reactions to headlines via a forum on both ABCNews.com and ChannelOne.com. In addition, ABC News will include Channel One segments and viewer feedback into their program. Students can submit content created on their mobile phones, digital cameras, camcorders and/or webcams.
Disney has picked up the rights to Animated American, a mixed live-action/animated movie, per Daily Variety. The movie revolves around an animated teen who is trying to fit with everyone in his live-action world. Set to be produced by Bob Cooper’s Landscape Entertainment and ImageMovers partners Robert Zemeckis and Jack Rapke, the screenplay for Animated American will be penned by Peter Ackerman.
Paramount and Warner Bros. will release director Robert Zemeckis’ digitally-enhanced live-action movie adaptation of the old English epic poem Beowulf in REAL D, as well as other large format 3D theaters, simultaneous to the movie’s release in traditional movie houses, on November, 2007. When Beowulf in REAL D will be available in 1,000+ theaters around the world, most of which are in the US. As if it wasn’t enough to have a screenplay by Neil Gaiman and Robert Avary and a cast including Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich amongst others.
MARKETING/LICENSING
The Weinstein Company has become the first of the US movie studios to respond to a letter sent to the big movie studios last month by 41 US state attorney generals. The letter encouraged the studios to feature anti-smoking public service announcements prior to the feature presentation on all home entertainment releases, on any and all formats, for movies they distribute that depict smoking. When the Weinstein Company releases Clerks II on DVD this December 5, 2006, it will feature one of the American Legacy Foundation’s ads from its truth campaign, a youth smoking prevention initiative. The request sent in a letter a year ago, included three of the Foundation’s truth ads, which were also made available to the studios to insert in their home entertainment releases. Last month the American Legacy Foundation published Televised Movie Trailers: Undermining Restrictions on Advertising Tobacco to Youth, a new study which found that the majority of teens are being exposed to smoking images through movie trailers on TV, despite the fact that tobacco advertising was banned from TV in 1971. The study looked at all movie trailers that ran on TV from August 1, 2001 to July 31, 2002. http://www.americanlegacy.org/

Another advertiser is looking to movie screens and aliens to spread its message to consumers. The California Milk Processor Board is set to expand its Got Milk? campaign into movie theaters for the first time. Beginning November 17 CMPB will debut its new campaign Aliens, a series of five humorous spots edited into one a two-minute shorts for theaters, and seen on 600 movie screens. Developed by CMPB’s advertising partners Gooby, Silverstein & Partners, the premise of Aliens is to get consumers to look at milk in a new way, specifically as seen through the eyes of extraterrestrials who see milk as a “miracle elixir.” The first four Alien spots began airing on TV in California in March 2006; the fifth spot makes its premiere in movie theaters.
Compedia, an interactive game publisher/developer, is developing a series of educational interactive based on Casper the Friendly Ghost, under a deal with Classic Media. The CD-ROM and DVD TV format games will include various activities and songs to help the learning experience along, the new games set for release this fall. Classic Media recently completed a deal with MoonScoop to produce a new Casper the Friendly Ghost animated TV series, which will be developed with TF1 (France) and co-produced by India’s DQ Entertainment. The new animated movie, Casper’s Scare School, premieres this month on Cartoon Network.
Shutterfly, Inc., the web-based social expression and personal publishing service, and HIT Entertainment have entered into a licensing deal to create and distribute a line of personalized Photo Books, which will feature some of HIT’s preschool characters Thomas & Friends and Angelina Ballerina. Consumers will be able to create their own Photo Books by adding their pictures into original stories and different themed backgrounds.
