Starbucks unveiled its in-store Starbucks Digital Network, offering customers a selection of premium content from such partners a Yahoo, the WSJ, Nickelodeon, Zagat and iTunes along with their complementary Wi-Fi. You’ll get access to Nick Jr. Boost or the Journal’s premium content if even if you’re not a subscriber, be able to virtually flip through the NYTimes using the paper’s Reader 2.0 app or read full excerpts of bestsellers via the “Bookish Reading Club,” from major publishers including Hachette, HarperCollins, Penguin, Simon & Schuster. There’s even an integration with Foursquare – part of the network’s localized My Neighborhood channel. Yahoo is managing and hosting the network, which supports HTML5 and includes interfaces optimized for popular smartphones and tablet devices including the iPhone and iPad.
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
Paramount Digital Entertainment
penned an exclusive two-year first-look deal with Red Hour Digital, the new digital arm of Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films. Red Hour will develop original digital media properties for a variety of formats, including live action and animated webisodes and social media games on both digital and mobile platforms. In the pipeline are a short form animated spinoff and social media game around “Zoolander” as well as an original online comedy, “Billy Glimmer, Entertainer of the Century,” starring Stiller himself.
 
Denver-based digital archiving company Thought Equity Motion (TEM) has signed a multi-year contract extension with the NCAA to continue to manage and archive video footage and supporting additional services. The NCAA, which has been working to further monetize sites such as the NCAA Vault as a year round destination, will work with TEM and Turner Sports to utilize APIs to deliver archival video though various platforms and services and expand the scope of the Vault to add more basketball games and additional sports.
 
Canwest Broadcasting’s HGTV.ca launched three home improvement-themed original web series yesterday, “Model Home Showdown,” “The Switch with Samantha Pynn” and “Starting Point.”
 
Disney is offering up the entire library of Pixar Studios on Demand to promote the release of Toy Story 3. Movies dating back to Toy Story and A Bug’s Life will be available for purchase via participating providers through Nov. 9.

On Politix is LIN Media’s new 16-station-site-wide effort to cover local political campaigns leading up to the midterm elections. Features include candidate profiles with a special section dedicated to sponsored legislation, live streaming of events and debates, user-generated op-ed articles and news and analysis from LIN Media reporters and bloggers.
 
Big Shots L.A. is a new online reality series from Babelgum following real life tabloid photographer Tuan Pham and his paparazzi outfit Phamous Fotos, on their daily quest to out do the competition. Brad Blondheim (Scratch, Big Rig) directs.
 
“Verge Culture” themed site KarmaloopTV.com struck a partnership with streetwear retailer Skee.tv to jointly expand video offering, content and e-commerce offerings.

TVGuide.com announced today that it has signed ABC as the lead television programming sponsor of its new social TV Check-In feature, which integrates the popular editors’ Hot List with “I’ll Watch” buttons that allow fans to share what TV shows they are watching via news stream posts on Facebook.
 

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

 
Connected TV content provider Netflix reported a 26% jump in Q3 profit as sales rose a better-than-expected 31% to $553.2 million and the company signed 1.93 million new subscribers – up from 1.03 million new customers during Q2. Total subscribers, expected to top an upwardly revised 19 million by year end, increased 52% from a year earlier and 13% from last quarter.
 
FCC
Commissioner Michael J. Copps admonished Fox and Cablevision in a statement for not hammering out a retransmission deal and noted that Fox’s move to block Hulu from Cablevision subscribers “directly threatens the open internet.”
 
Video technology firm Envivio unveiled new architecture for cable headends and CDNs that enable operators to use a single headend to handle multiple video processing requirements. The solution is designed to reduce backbone bandwidth requirements and streamline network management and monitoring.

Thanks to the proliferation of smartphones and the advancements of premium ad mobile ad networks like Apple’s iAd, mobile ad spending is projected to increase a whopping 79% y/y in 2010 to reach $743 million and is expected to top $1 billion next year, according to a new forecast from eMarketer. Video, display and search ad spending on mobile will all more than double this year, according to the forecast, while growth in SMS messaging advertising (still the dominant format, accounting for an estimated $327 million in spending in 2010) will lag behind other more sophisticated mobile formats.

Apple
unveiled a handful of new products and applications yesterday in its usual grand style, including a newly redesigned iLife media suite and brand new ultra-thin MacBook Air laptop:

  • Apple is extending the FaceTime video calling service to Mac desktops and laptops
  • iLife 11 ($49 to upgrade) has been updated to make it more social, enabling iPhoto users to send photos directly to friends via Facebook or Twitter; design even fancier “iBooks” or create your own iMovie trailers to promote your video creations
  • the new MacBook Air is $500 cheaper and even thinner (it tapers from back to front), weighs only 2.9 pounds and ships in two screen sizes – 13.3 inch and 11 inch, starting at $999 for the 64GB model
  • the next version of Mac OS X, called Lion, will feature improved integration with the App store and feature multi-touch apps built exclusively for Mac computers (for use with a track-pad or mouse)

 
Verizon Wireless
announced that the much-talked-about Galaxy Tab tablet device from Samsung will go on sale from Nov. 11 at $600. The 7-inch screen Galaxy Tab runs on Google’s new Android 2.2 OS that supports Flash for video and mobile gaming. Verizon will sell data plans starting at $20/mo. for 1 GB/mo, similar to the pricing structure for the Verizon-powered, Wi-Fi only iPad (launching Oct. 28.)

is releasing free mobile apps around the reality show Keep Up with the Kardashians for iPhone, iPod Touch and Android featuring video content, photo galleries and news from the series, as well as from spin offs Kourtney & Khloe Take Miami and Kourtney & Kim Take New York.

Chris Elwell has been upped to EVP/U.S. Distribution, for Sony Pictures Television (SPT), reporting to Steve Mosko, President, SPT. In an expanded role, Elwell leads a team that includes strategic planning for all forms of distribution, including licensing and delivery of feature films, television properties, digital channels and new media products across all third party and company-owned platforms.
 
Mike Rosenstein
has been promoted to Director of Digital Content for Paramount Digital Entertainment. He will oversee the company’s new tie up with Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Digital.

Networks also continue to build out their sports-related social networking integrations. ESPN is increasing its multiplatform coverage of the NBA this season, streaming every live game featured on ESPN and ESPN2 on the ESPN3 broadband site and sprucing up online features such as the ESPN GameCast stat feed and Daily Dime Live social interaction app, powered by CoveritLive. ESPN Digital Media is also returning with a full-court press of NBA Fantasy Basketball tools, adding mobile apps and a new FantasyCast app that allows players to track their teams during live games. Finally, partner NBA Digital is bringing back the multiplatform check-in tool it debuted during the finals last year developed with Fanvibe dubbed NBA Turnstile. It encourages fans to connect while watching games via social and location-based networks including Foursquare, Gowalla, Twitter and Facebook to unlock badges and interact with other fans.
