Cynopsis

10/19/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 19, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

After announcing the cancellation of Runaway, reports are The CW has ordered up a full season of 7th Heaven, tho nothing official has been announced. 7th Heaven is now in its 11th season, making it the longest-running family drama in television history.

Over at NBC, the network has ordered ten more episodes of its new game show 1 vs. 100 with host Bob Saget for a total of 15 eps; and NBC has ordered 9 additional scripts for Friday Night Lights.   1 vs. 100 is from Endemol USA; Friday NIght LIghts is from Imagine TV and NBC Universal.  NBC also plans to test out Friday NIght Lights in the current time slot home to Studio 60, Monday night at 10p, on October 30th, and then repeat the same episode in its regular Tuesday 8p time period.

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

Shown the door is a drama series that hasn’t even seen the light of a primetime schedule yet – CBS has decided to take a pass on its midseason series Waterfront.  The show currently has the pilot plus four episodes in the can.  Waterfront is from Warner Bros. TV, and starred Joe Pantoliano as the Mayor of Providence, Rhode Island.  CBS reportedly has decided to let the show go in part because it has few time periods to place it.

The History Channel presents Our Generation, a look at the stories and events that define the Baby Boom generation, hosted by author and historian Steve Gillon. The 13-episode series will premiere with double episodes on October 27 at 7p, with the first one going back to Kent State: May 4, 1970. Other episodes explore The Sexual Revolution, Moon Landing, and The Ford Mustang, among other events. The series is produced for The History Channel by Talk Productions.

Nielsen Media Research has provided an update on the development of its Average Commercial Minute MIT Data File service, by which they will measure the number of people watching specific national commercials.  While the topic has been a controversial lightening rod as Nielsen has worked to define what a national spot is, how it will be measured, etc., Nielsen has spent a good amount of these last several weeks talking to its clients and has made some inroads:

  • National Commercial Minute Definition: Minutes with more than one second of national commercial time will be included, and weighted according to the number of national seconds in the spot. Direct REsponse national ads will be included; PSAs will not.
  • Delivery Date: The initial data release date has been moved from November 18 to December 11. The extra time is needed to make necessary changes to the original specifications. Despite the three-week wait, clients will receive historical data going back to the beginning of the current TV season. Then, starting December 18, data will be produced on-going.
  • Fees: The data will be made available at no charge for the 2006/2007 TV season, so that clients can have ample time to evaluate the information. Clients must decide if they want to participate by November 1st, those who later choose to opt out will not have access to the data.

Anime Channel will host the US VOD premiere of the anime series Paniponi Dash on November 30.  The launch of the series on VOD will be followed by the release of Paniponi Dash Volume 1 on December 5, 2006.  The series is filled with everything that made high school great, wait … high school was great?  Anyhow, this 10th grade class has a nasty girl, angry nerd, identical twins, an invisible girl, a freaky class president, drama geek, a gamer, a princess and of course the teacher, an 11-yr-old MIT graduate named Becky who is prone to crying fits.  Targeted to teen and up, the series is adapted from a manga of the same name.

* PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT *

Fox has given a put pilot commitment to a drama project called Suspicion from Warner Bros. TV and writer Emily Whitesell.  The story is about a woman whose life changes once she learns her boyfriends secret.

Oxygen has a new project – its first competition series – called Tease with host Lisa Rinna, says Hollywood Reporter. Each episode focuses on two up & coming hairstylists who compete head-to-head (so to speak) against a so-called master stylist.  Think Iron Chef with hair stylists.  Oxygen has ordered six episodes an production is set to begin next week.

Correction :  In yesterday’s edition I incorrectly identified David Ehrman as a co-creator of the Fox series 24, with Bob Cochran. 24 was co-created by Cochran and Joel Surnow.  Ehrman is the co-writer of the pilot NSA Innocent for Fox, together with Cochran.

Casting Call: The producers of such shows as The Office, Blow Out and The Biggest Loser are casting for Top Hair on Bravo, a hair stylist competition show with a grand prize of $100,000. Professionally trained or self-taught stylists who are creative, skilled and ready to compete are welcome to apply.  Interviews can be scheduled by emailing: [email protected]. In addition, open calls will be announced in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas, Chicago and Miami and more information can be found at www.bravotv.com/contestants

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution has upped Rick Meril to EVP/General Sales Manager to supervise the distribution sales efforts for the company’s first-run and off-network properties, including shows from Warner Bros. Television, Telepictures Productions and Warner Horizon Television, as well as films from Warner Bros. Pictures and the Turner Entertainment library. In addition, he will manage the daily operations of WBDTD’s administration, research, marketing, creative services, programming and new business development divisions.

Atlas Media has named Jeanne McHale Waite as its new SVP/GM.  Jeanne makes the move to Atlas from Banyan Prods where he was CEO.  Also upped were Steve Holtzman to VP/Production and Andrew Scher to VP/Production Relations.

Todd Saypoff has been appointed CFO for NBC Universal’s iVillage Properties to spearhead the company’s digital media expansion. Todd was previously the CFO at Bravo. In his new role, he will report directly to Deborah Fine, President, iVillage Properties.

Carey Chase has joined Zephyr Media Group, the marketing and advertising firm based in Evanston, IL, as Media Supervisor. She was previously media director at Castalian Music.

G4 has hired Robin Radzinski as Director/Production to manage the production of all original programming for the network, reporting to John Rieber, SVP. She will be based at G4’s Los Angeles headquarters and will also be involved with the planning of the network’s live event specials.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1781-Lord Cornwallis, commander of British forces in America, finds himself surrounded at Yorktown by a combined Franco-American force and surrenders his 8,000 soldiers and seamen.  The defeat of the British army under Cornwallis effectively ended the American Revolution, although peace would not be signed until 1783.
