Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 18, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.
CBeebies (UK) commissions kid-centric indie TV production company Darrall Macqueen (Baby Jake, Bear Behaving Badly, Smile, among others) to produce the new preschool drama, Topsy and Tim (60×11) as a co-production with Penguin. Based on the bestselling books by authors Jean and Gareth Adamson, which originally debuted in the 1960s, the titles are still published to day by Ladybird, an imprint of Penguin Children’s in the UK. Topsy and Tim will be filmed from the point-of-view of 5-year-old twins as they make their first steps towards independence and various daily family life experiences, everything from a washing the car to finding a lost pet, as well as dealing with life events like moving houses. The series also aims to bolster kid viewer’s personal, social and emotional development as they identify with and learn from the twins’ experiences. Topsy and Tim is produced by Fiona Robinson and executive produced by Maddy Darrall and Billy Macqueen for Darrall Macqueen and Michael Towner for CBeebies
Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) reveals plans to launch new infant products for Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer properties at Brand Licensing Europe this week in London. The new product lines, Dora Baby and Bubbly Baby Bob! (both working titles), are currently set to rollout internationally in winter/spring 2013. The new lines will feature a whole new look and feel, and will compliment the existing Dora and SpongeBob product lines. The Dora Baby line is aimed at babies 0-24 months, focusing on the elements of Dora the Explorer series including exploration, imagination and learning and features an earth-tone color palette. Initial Dora Baby products include apparel, layette and toys items, which will launch in Canada, France, UK, Australia, Spain, Mexico, Benelux, Turkey and Israel by late 2013. The Bubbly Baby Bob! Collection is targeted to babies 0-36 months, and will showcase SpongeBob’s playful, optimistic and positivity as well as incorporating simple phrases as well as the Bikini Bottom gang all in a soft color palette. Initial new product offerings will focus on apparel and accessories.
V&S Entertainment enters into a publishing deal with Italian publisher De Agostini Libri for the preschool property Everything’s Rosie for Italy. Under the terms of the deal, De Agostini will publish print and electronic books featuring characters from the Everything’s Rosie, including color and activity books, a puzzle book and a play book. Set to launch at retail in March 2013, the books will be available across Italy, San Marino and the Italian-speaking Ticino area of Switzerland. This deal comes on the heels of V&S Entertainment’s appointment of Starbright as its licensing agent in Italy. Everything’s Rosie can be seen in Italy on broadcaster Rai’s RAIYOYO and DeaKids on the pay TV platform Sky Italia. DeaKids is part of the De Agostini group of media companies.
Fox Consumer Products EMEA (FCP) completes UK retail partnerships and program expansion for author Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, just ahead of the publication of the seventh book, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel, releasing this November 14 (UK release). FCP signs UK and European deals that will showcase Diary of a Wimpy Kid’s protagonist, middle school student, Greg Heffley, in a consumer products campaign. New partners include Winning Moves and its Top Trumps card game, which will launch this November 2012 worldwide. WH Smith is supporting the brand with board games from Paul Lamond, stationery from Robert Frederick, and greeting cards from Danilo. BM Fashions has already introduced T-shirts at BHS this summer, and have now expanded their deal to include nightwear and essentials.
Turner CN Enterprises (TCNE) inks two licensing partnerships for its boy-targeted Ben 10 action/adventure brand with two fashion houses, Benetton Group and Dolce and Gabbana’s D&G. The news comes as the new Ben 10 Omniverse series debuts. TCNE’s two-year global deal with Benetton Group (excluding Myanmar and Korea) will see the creation and release of apparel (jackets, sweatshirts, underwear), footwear (shoes, slippers) and accessories (backpacks) for boys and girls that incorporate the Ben 10 Universe, including classic, Alien Force and Ultimate Alien style guides, at United Colors of Benetton stores. The deal also includes online distribution for affiliated websites. The D&G partnership, also a two-year agreement, will feature t-shirts targeted to boys 4-12 that will release fall/winter 2012/2013. The different t-shirt designs will be based on Ben 10 Classic, Ben 10 Alien Force and Ben 10 Ultimate Alien series and will be available from Dolce & Gabbana’s monobrand boutiques, selected official Dolce & Gabbana retailers and high-end authorized department stores worldwide.
Entertainment One (eOne) and master toy partner Golden Bear renew their deal for eOne’s pre-school property Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom, with new products slated to launch in 2013. eOne will debut a new look for the Ben and Holly’s product range in 2013 to reflect the newly refreshed the colors and logo on packaging to underline the brand’s core girl audience for licensed product. Additionally, Golden Bear has developed a new range of plush and plastic toys focused on the fairies Holly, Fleur and Violet, which is being unveiled this week at Brand Licensing Europe. These new products will be available in a variety of formats and price points including key chains, beanies and large plush. To build awareness for the new products from Golden Bear and other licensees for Ben and Holly in Q4 2012, eOne is working with broadcast partner Channel 5 Milkshake! (UK), charity partner Jeans for Genes, Leaps and Bounds preschool chain and national play program Tumble Tots on consumer marketing activities. Additionally, eOne has developed new interactive mini-games, Magic School Games, which will be hosted on its online channels and third party websites targeting preschoolers and parents.
Warner Bros. Consumer Products EMEA (WBCP EMEA) is partnering with apparel retailer TV Mania to produce a new line of clothing based on classic Superman, with the first collection to include a line of products based on Man of Steel, Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures‘ upcoming new Superman feature film set for release on June 14, 2013. The Superman collection will include items for Superman fans of all ages. TV Mania’s initial Superman products will be debut from the beginning of 2013 with retail distribution across European grocers and fashion retailers, with the full collection set to be available at retailers at all levels (mass market to mid and high-tier), with custom designs for each retailer, across EMEA from spring/summer 2013.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) and Exim Licensing Group, AGP’s international licensing agent for Brazil, sign several new merchandising partners for the Strawberry Shortcake brand for a variety of products. New Brazilian licensees for Strawberry Shortcake, where she is known as Moranguinho, include: Rubies do Brasil (costumes and accessories); Stock 25 (hair accessories); Arcor do Brasil (candy); Climaco Comercio (nail polish); and Plasutil Industria (housewares). AGP and Exim have also renewed pacts with several licensees in Brazil including Editora Alto Astral and Ciranda Cultural (publishing), Grendene (footwear) and Foroni (American Greetings core product and stationery products). Additionally, AGP and Exim have signed a regional deal with Marmol & Sons (perfume) for Strawberry Shortcake in the Caribbean, Central America, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Uruguay, Colombia and Chile.
Space Enterprises, licensing agent for preschool property The Hive, completes a sweet licensing deal with Lifeplan Products for a line of Hive honey. The Hive is produced by Monumental Productions, Lupus Films and DQ Entertainment and revolves around the happy, friendly and extremely cute Bee family, who live together in Honeybee Hive. Lifeplan Products will release jars of Hive-branded Active Rainforest Honey, a South American honey variety with nutritional benefits. Further licensing activity for The Hive includes a deal with interactive partner Avanquest to add iPad and iPhone games with the new Bee Books eBooks. Space and Avanquest are also working on a special version of the Bee Book that will be available as a downloadable redemption feature when buying The Hive honey. Meanwhile, master toy partner Mookie will release a plush line that at retailers including Amazon, Asda Online, Smyths, The Entertainer, Hamleys, AIS and Toymaster. This will be followed by an interactive plush line in 2013. Other UK partners include LeapFrog, which includes The Hive content on its LeapPad learning tablet and the Leapster games console, EMI Publishing, Moonpig, Blues Clothing and Jupiter Toys, as well as a nightwear line from Aykroyds available at Mothercare.
FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), Jakks Pacific, and Dentsu Entertainment USA unveil plans to produce another season of the boy-targeted action/adventure series Monsuno. The new season of Monsuno will be comprised of 26×30 episodes. Additionally, the new season will be supported by a new group of transforming action figures, accessories, combat sets and battle gameplay from Jakks Pacific in 2013. Monsuno is co-produced by Pacific Animation Partners, a joint venture between Jakks Pacific and Dentsu Entertainment USA, with FME and The Topps Company. FME handles the exclusive worldwide distribution of Monsuno TV programming outside of Asia and serves as the master licensing agent for the brand outside of Asia. Monsuno was created by Jakks Pacific, which is also the master toy licensee for the property.
PBS Kids Go is set to premiere new episodes of The Kratt Brothers Company and 9 Story Entertainment‘s science-centric animated series Wild Kratts this month. PBS Kids Go is debuting new episodes of Wild Kratts this week, followed by four more debut episodes during Weird Kratts Week, Monday-Friday, October 22-26, and a new Halloween episode on Wednesday, October 31 (check local listings for times).
PBS Kids will premiere four new episodes of The Jim Henson Company‘s animated series Sid the Science Kid during Sid’s Living Things Week, November 12-15 (check local listings for times), beginning with the new episode Sid’s Pet Projects featuring actress America Ferrera as the voice of biologist Dr. Rosalinda Cordova.
In Canada, Disney Junior will introduce its first little girl princess, Sofia, with the premiere of the new animated TV movie Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess, Saturday, November 24 at 7p. Leading into the movie will be an exclusive international debut of an episode of Doc McStuffins at 6:30p. Produced by Disney Television Animation, the music-filled Sofia the First TV movie, which includes an appearance by Cinderella, will then be available on Disney Junior OnDemand beginning November 30. The Sofia the First animated TV series is set to premiere on Disney Junior in early 2013. Fans can find out more about the movie at www.disneyjunior.ca/sofiathefirst. Additionally, on November 15, a dedicated supersite will launch featuring coloring pages, new games and a special Sofia-themed contest.
