Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 16, 2008 and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Paramount Pictures plans to reduce the number of movie releases on its schedule to about 20 films per year, beginning in 2009, per ComingSoon.net.  Of those 20 films, Paramount will release 12 titles, which will include those from Nickelodeon Films and MTV Films, and about four more movies from Paramount Vantage, as well as between 2-4 from DreamWorks Animation and Marvel Studios.  Additionally, Adam Goodman will be named President/Production, Paramount, he moves over from DreamWorks, where he will oversee a staff that will in turn manage current DreamWorks projects and creative relationships, as well as new development.  He will report both to John Lesher President/Paramount Film Group and Rob Moore, Vice Chairman/Paramount Pictures. Goodman will work with Brad Weston, who will continue to serve as Production President, Paramount Pictures, which includes oversight of creative staff and new and ongoing development, talent relationships.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Jetix Europe commissions a new short-form 3D animated non-verbal comedy, The Secret Life of Suckers (104×2), from Spain’s BRB Internacional that will be available via its VOD player on many of Jetix European websites from early 2009.  Following the debut the program will rollout across other Jetix platforms including mobile.  As part of the deal Jetix Europe holds the consumer product and home entertainment rights for the series across Europe and the Middle East (excluding Spain, Portugal and Andorra).  The deal comes on the heels of Jetix Europe’s announcement that it will offer short-form content via an interactive VOD player debuting on its new-look websites.  Created by BRB Internacional and Genoma Animation, in association with Screen 21 and Televisio de Catalunya, The Secret Life of Suckers follows a group of toys tired of their dull lives stuck to car windows.

MIPCOM NEWS

Taffy Entertainment inks a deal for its animated series I Got A Rocket! (52×11) with Disney Channel UK, Scandinavia and Emerging Markets.  The comedy is slated to debut in early 2009.  Produced by SLR Productions, in association with Taffy Entertainment, Sunwoo Entertainment, Peach Blossom, KI.KA ARD and Europool, I Got A Rocket! is based on the popular Australian kid’s book of the same name.  The show is currently available in the US on Kabillion, Network 10 and Nickelodeon in Australia, Gulli in France and Germany’s KI.KA among others.

Toei Animation Europe launches a new version of its French dedicated website for the anime series One Piece this week.  The site features new One Piece quiz games, animated wallpapers, videos etc. in addition to series history and character background.  Produced by Toei Animation Co, One Piece is televised in France on the DTT Channel Virgin 17, as well as 13 other countries.  Further localized versions of the One Piece website are set to debut in other European countries.

France’s Cyber Group animator and distributor inked a volume agreement with Disney Latin America to broadcast shows such as Ozie Boo and Manon.  In addition, the deal covers a first look option at Cyber Group’s new series, per TBIvision.  Cyber Group also launched a new 1×90-minute TV movie based on the Foreign Body book and internet show as a co-production with Vuguru.

Channel One Russia Worldwide acquires broadcast rights for a program package in a long-term license deal Studio100 Media, which includes thematic pay TV sectors in Russia and other countries.  The package includes the live-action series Pippi Longstocking, and animated series Tabaluga (season 1, 26×24), Flipper & Lopaka (season 2, 26×24) and Lapitch, the Little Shoemaker (26×24).  The deal includes exclusive rights to broadcast the package of shows on TV Nanny, the 24/7 Russian-language channel aimed at K3-8.

In other news, Studio100 Media/EM.Entertainment is making selected program available for download from the iTunes Store in Germany.  Shows that can be purchased and downloaded from Studio100 TV include family-targeted content from shows including the first seasons of Tabaluga, Flipper & Lopaka, F.T.P.D  Fairytale Police Department, Momo and Norman Normal, as well as new productions such as Dogstar and Staines Down Drains.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Nickelodeon UK enters into a publishing deal with Simon & Schuster to produce a series of tie-in novels for K7-12 in the UK and Ireland based on the network’s live-action TV series.  The series debuts in February 2009 with three titles, H20: Living With Secrets, H20: No Ordinary Girl, and Drake and Josh: Blues Brothers, which will be followed in May 2009 with an Unfabulous title, and a third H20 title as well as the first The Naked Brothers Band title in June 2009, as well as an iCarly book that fall.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

HIT Entertainment does a little restructuring:

  • Peter Byrne, EVP/Consumer Products and Home Entertainment, International, will focus his efforts on expanding developing markets, third party licensing and acquisitions, as well as further increasing the company’s International Consumer Products, Home Entertainment.  He will continue to have oversight for global live events and attractions and publishing.  Byrne will report to Jeff Dunn, CEO.
  • Pam Westman is upped to EVP/Consumer Products and Home Entertainment, The Americas.
  • The company has also created a new Global Brand Management, and has promoted Natasha Fishman and Rick Glankler to SVPs/Brand Management, where they will be responsible for long-term planning and strategic direction for HIT’s brands.  The team reports directly to Dunn.
  • Additionally, the legal department has also been centralized, with Joseph Salvo named as SVP/Global General Counsel.  He joins HIT from Weil, Gotshal & Manges.

RATINGS

Nickelodeon’s yellow porous one sopped up 7.7 million total viewers 2+ in the primetime premiere of SpongeBob SquarePants’ special WhoBob WhatPants?, on Monday, October 13 at 8-8:30p.  The special was the top cable entertainment show of the night with Total Viewers 2+ and tops also on broadcast and ad-supported cable TV for the night with kids and tweens averaging a 4.1 million among K2-11, 2.7 million with K6-11, and 2.3 million among Tweens 9-14.  Additionally, the new online SpongeBob-themed game at Nick.com generated 2.6 million game plays, making the game the most popular game on the site since launch.
