Cynopsis: DIGITAL
10/14/10

Good morning, it’s Thursday, October 14, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here

The all important search marketplace continues to evolve as Facebook and Microsoft unveiled a new Search partnership that will see Bing power personalized searches on the social networking site, including details about your friends and what they like. When you search for something on Bing or in web results on Facebook (powered by Bing), you’ll be able to see your friends’ smiling faces next to web pages they’ve liked. Also, a new Instant Personalization feature will pull up reviews your friends place on Rotten Tomatoes, Pandora, Yelp or Scrib’d. The opt-outable integration could prove to be a huge boost for Bing, which has flatlined in recent months in terms of market share. Bing accounted for 11.2% of all U.S. searches in Sept., according to ComScore, compared to over 66% for Google.

Syfy.com announced it will premiere “steampunk” digital series “Riese: Kingdom Falling” beginning Oct. 26 with new episodes appearing every Tuesday and Thursday. The fantasy/sci fi yarn, narrated by Amanda Tapping of “Sanctuary” fame, won a Streamy Award for Best Cinematography and was nominated for Best Sound Design and Art Direction. The series will also be distributed via Sony’s PS3, Microsoft’s Xbox and Amazon.

Comedic video site Funny Or Die has received another pilot order, this time from TBS for “Under Cover Karaoke”, based on the site’s Undercover Karaoke with Jewel video that has racked up over 3.3 million views to date. Creator Eric Appel, Funny Or Die co-founder Chris Henchy and Funny Or Die’s President of Production Mike Farah will serve as executive producers.

Springo
launched a new Springo Kids customizable safe online environment this week. Targeted to K4-12, Springo Kids maps out kid-targeted websites in a grid format with pictures/logos, featuring websites it recommends or sites added individually by kid users, organized by topic. Springo says it is employing a combination of human editors and “back end technology” to provide a safe environment and kid appropriate content. Content providers do not currently pay a fee to be featured on the site, which as yet does not feature ads.

Rental DVD Kiosk company Redbox has begun offering game rentals for the PS2, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and Nintendo DS. The games cost $2/night plus tax, compared to snail mail subscription service GameFly, which charges $15.95/mo. to rent one game at a time.

Tivo

After getting a taste the youth market spotlight in his cameo in “The Hangover,” Mike Tyson is launching his own iPhone app and game division under an umbrella of developer Rock Software.

Online video ad network YuMe introduced a new soup-to-nuts buy-side video ad management system designed to cut down on leg work for agencies and advertisers. The company’s ACE platform is designed to give planners complete control over a digital video campaign’s entire lifecycle, streamlining processes for media planning and buying, ad trafficking, creative management, ad serving, optimization and post-campaign analytics.

The CW
is preparing to release research that indicates online viewers who tune into full length episodes of premium content are ready for a much bigger commercial load, (a finding consistent with research conducted earlier this year by Hulu), reports AdAge.

Mobile video and rich media ad network iVdopia, which support the HTML5 ad format, announced that its publisher revenues have increased by 250% since the beginning of the year, with the company serving more than one billion ad requests on a network of more than 15,000 publisher and app sites.

Seattle-based online ad start-up Mixpo introduced a series of new tools that make it easy for advertisers to integrate online banner ads with their television spots, target ads and increase viewer engagement. Advertisers can tailor campaign messaging and creative to viewers based on age and gender; day part ads to choose specific times of the day or week; or serve multiple ads in a designated order to convey a broader story or branding message.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Microsoft is partnering with Chinese portal Alibaba Group to test a new search engine in China. The launch of the beta version of the Etao search site occurred last weekend, combining Alibaba’s e-commerce engine with a Mandarin version of Bing. Microsoft has also integrated a new dictionary feature into Bing, allowing users to look up words and find translations in Mandarin or English.

The proposed merger between Lions Gate Entertainment Corp. and MGM has won the backing of boardroom heavyweight Carl Icahn, who owns shares in both companies, per Reuters. Icahn would end up owning 20-25% of the merged studio.

The Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) weighed in on the net neutrality debate, arguing that establishing guidelines for ISPs would not deter innovation or investment but rather insure parity between indie producers and large entertainment conglomerates. “The only way to ensure that the promise (of the internet) is fulfilled is through access to an open and robust internet with diverse sources of content and applications,” states the IFTA’s FCC filing.

Almost a fifth of American adults – 19% – have tried video calling either online or via their cell phones, according to a new study from the Pew Internet & American Life project. These figures translate into 23% of internet users and 7% of cell phone owners who have participated in video calls, chats, or teleconferences. Video calling online especially tends to appeal to upscale users, with one third of chatters netting $75k or above. Nearly 30% of 18-29 year olds have participated in video chats, calls or teleconferences.

As we inch closer to the midterm elections, a number of useful online and mobile apps are emerging to help citizens follow the action. To complement its online Election Center destination, CNN has introduced a new Election Center app for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry offering breaking news, video and full interactive capabilities via integration with CNN’s popular citizen journalist iReport platform. You can track individual races by zip code, take quizzes to help figure our which party you belong in and, of course, earn badges to show off your affiliations. With the Supreme Court declaring open season on anonymous corporate donations for individual candidates earlier this year, one clear trend in coverage is comparing which candidates are raising the most funds. WashingtonPost.com tracks spending by special interest groups such as the deep-pocketed U.S. Chamber of Commerce. This week’s “PolitiQuizz” on independent blog OpenSecrets asks which congressional race has been the most expensive so far in 2010. Data for current candidates shows the Florida Senate race to have raised the most so far ($32 million) and the Arizona Senate race to have spent the most to date ($25 million).
