Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 13, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Odyssey Pictures Corporation acquires the screenplay and feature film rights to the popular kid’s book franchise, Hank the Cowdog ( www.hankthecowdog.com ), from Rising Star Studios.  Odyssey plans to produce an animated feature film based on the property.  Created by author John R. Erickson, there are 58 humorous novels and audios based on the adventures of Hank the Cowdog, all of which feature illustrations by Gerald L. Holmes.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Fox gives the go ahead on the next feature film in the Percy Jackson series, which is based on the Percy Jackson & the Olympians young adult books by noted author Rick Riordan, per THR.  The studio has slated the new movie, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, for release on March 27, 2013, the Wednesday just before Easter.  No word on if Chris Columbus will return to direct the second movie in the series.  Fox released the first movie in the series, Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief in February 2010.

LICENSING

Discovery Communications furthers its publishing pact with Parragon Books for the first Discovery Kids iPad app, Discovery Kids Sharks ($4.99).  Targeted to K5-9, the new Discovery Kids Sharks app invites kids to explore the depths of the ocean and uncover content via a combination of animated games, information and live-action video footage collected from Discovery Channel’s popular programming event Shark Week.  Discovery Kids Sharks features a look at the different shark species, their feeding habits and where they live. Each section begins with footage from Shark Week programming followed by interactive games, which help reinforce the facts included across the app.  Users can collect a number of digital trading cards as they scroll through underwater scenes filled with sea life in a format designed specifically for the iPad.  The Discovery Kids Sharks app complements the Discovery Kids line of more than 150 books, 3D readers, kids’ encyclopedias, activity and sticker sets from Parragon.  Big Tent Entertainment, the North American licensing for the Discovery Kids Brand, brokered the deal on behalf of Discovery Communications.

Classic Media expands the line of Where’s Wally? consumer products offerings to pop up in the UK across multiple categories just ahead of the brand’s 25th anniversary in 2012.  (The Where’s Wally? brand is known in the US as Where’s Waldo?).  New Where’s Wally? lines for the UK include: Gemma (stationery products and gift wrap); Paper Projects (stickers); Smith & Brooks (apparel for boys and girls including daywear, swimwear, nightwear, underwear and footwear); Smiffy’s (dress-up costumes for kids and adults); Mask-arade (kid character masks); Little Star Creations (audio accessories including headphones, iPod skins, laptop skins, mp3 cases, and Nintendo DS cases).  Additionally, Where’s Wally? will expand into several new areas, including housewares, with the first line available from Character World Limited (bedding and home accessories) and toiletries from SERT-MST PLC for 2012 (shaving kits, hair products, travel tissues, soaps and fragrance), with Trans-Continental introducing Wally to new outdoor adventures with the brand’s first line of camping equipment and tents.  Several partners will introduce party season related products, with Talking Tables (Partywear), Senoble UK Limited (Where’s Wally? cakes) and Kinnerton (Advent calendar and Easter kits).

Lisle International Licensing enters into a deal with Inspiration Works, a consumer electronics company, to create a new line of ZhuZhu Pets electronic toys and kid’s handheld consoles for release in 2012 in the UK.

CBS Consumer Products taps new licensing representatives Matrix Video Group and Brand Licensing Central to develop licensing programs across Russia and Mexico.  Both companies will oversee broad merchandising programs for CBS brands including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Next Top Model, Star Trek and Beverly Hills, 90210.  Matrix Video Group will represent CBS brands in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia and Turkmenistan. Brand Licensing Central will oversee Mexico.  These representation deals follow the recent announcement of CBS’s deal with Supermarcas, which will develop a licensing program across all the company’s signature brands throughout new markets in Central and South America.

MARKETING

Nelvana Enterprises and The Clifford Ross Company will help Babar celebrate his 80th anniversary with a range of activities.  A second season of the CG-animated series, Babar and the Adventures of Badou, a Canada/France co-production between Nelvana Studio and TeamTO, in association with The Clifford Ross Company and TF1, is under way with an additional 26×30 episodes (52×11), is currently in production with international delivery beginning this month.  Babar and his creator Jean de Brunhoff and his son Laurent, who took over for his father 1in 1941, will be honored in Paris at the Toy Gallery at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs from December 8, 2011through September 2, 2012.  The exhibition will feature the history of the Babar books through 100 original illustration boards from several institutions, as well as photos, plush toys, games, action figures and wheeled toys from as early as 1930, along with more recent licensed products.  There will also be a catalog for the exhibition, with a selection of classic Babar items available for sale at the Musee’s gift shop.  Additional Babar anniversary year activities include:

  • August 2011 – Abrams Books for Young Readers released Laurent de Brunhoff’s new book, Babar’s Celesteville Games.  Throughout 2011 Abrams will reissue Laurent de Brunhoff’s classic Babar books in a new format for the 80th anniversary.
  • In France, a line of books based on the new TV series has been launched by Hachette Jeunesse, which plans to publish 50-60 titles over the next three years.
  • Licensed products based on the new TV series have been debuting this year.  TF1 Licences is the agent for the brand in France and Benelux.  Licensees onboard include Lansay, Bayard, Hatier, Sun City, CTI, Dujardin, Vilac and Smoby.
  • Babar will be featured this holiday season in 16 Hotels Clubs Nouvelles Frontieres around the world.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Dora the Explorer and her friend Boots set out on a new magical three-part special, Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures, premiering this fall on Nickelodeon.  The special event features guest star Jason Alexander (Seinfeld) as the voice of the greedy owl in all three parts of Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures.  To support the special trilogy, NickJr.com will feature a new interactive game and activities inspired by the Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventure ( www.nickjr.com/dora-the-explorer/doras-enchanted-forest-adventures ) premieres.  Starting now, kids can travel with Dora through the Enchanted Forest and the lost world of Atlantis in a three level game, with each level coincides with one of the three special episodes and unlocks prior to the on-air premieres.  From October 25, kids can create their own magical creatures using Dora’s Enchanted Creature-Creator, which their parents can then submit online for a chance to be featured on-air.  Also, a behind-the-scenes video featuring Jason Alexander will be available on the site on November 13.  Produced by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, the Dora the Explorer: Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures (all three episodes) is currently available on DVD nationwide.  The Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures trilogy will debut as follows:

  • Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures Part I – Tale of the Unicorn King premieres Monday, October 17, 9-9:30a.
  • Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures Part II – Secret of Atlantis, debuts Monday November 7, 9-9:30a
  • Dora’s Enchanted Forest Adventures Part III – Dora Saves King Unicornio, the hour-long special bows Sunday, November 20, 8-9p.

Minnie Mouse gets her own short-form series, Minnie’s Bow-Toons, which will premiere during the Disney Junior block with a week of new episodes Monday-Saturday November 14-19 at 8:55a on Disney Channel and on DisneyJunior.com ( www.disneyjunior.com ).  Following Minnie’s Bow-Toons debut on Disney Channel, viewers can log on to DisneyJunior.com/Minnie to get an exclusive first look at the next day’s full episode.  Based on the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse series and produced by Disney Television Animation, the new series revolves around Minnie and her friend Daisy Duck as they run the Minnie’s Bow-Toons specialty boutique that sells bows and bowties.  To celebrate the debut of the new Minnie Mouse series, the Disney Junior block will feature the new shorts and Minnie-centric episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse during Disney Junior programming blocks on Disney Channel on Friday, November 18 (8:55a-12p) and Saturday, November 19 (6:30-9a).

VOD aggregator On Demand Group (ODG) and HIT Entertainment enter into a deal to provide a collection of HIT’s programming to Cablevision Mexico’s SVOD service for the first time.  Under the deal Cablevision customers in Mexico will be able to watch kid’s TV series such as Pingu, Mumuhug, Percy the Park Keeper, Untalkative Bunny, Rubbadubbers, Kipper, Animal Ark, Shelldon and Anthony Ant on demand.  The programs will be available in Spanish.  On Demand Group expects to announce further operator contracts in other Latin American regions soon.  HIT plans to expand its VOD offerings to other regions across Latin America.

Germany’s ProSiebenSat.1 completes an extensive VOD rights agreement for maxdome, its VOD download site, with Disney Germany.  The deal will add over 500 titles to maxdome’s portfolio of online video rental service, and includes a wide range of kids and family programming and feature films, which will be made available via maxdome both on a transactional basis and within the subscription package.  The deal includes current episodes following the Free TV broadcast of Disney Channel series such as Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, as well as the animated Disney Junior series Handy Manny.  Movies featured under the deal include Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides and other titles from Disney’s archive.

Shaftesbury inks sales for two of its kid/tween-targeted TV series, Connor Undercover (39×30) and Baxter (13×30), with HBO Asia.  Both programs will air on HBO Family in Asia across all territories.  Connor Undercover is co-produced by Shaftesbury and Heroic Film Company in association with Family Channel Canada.  Baxter is produced by Shaftesbury in association with Family Channel Canada.

Poptropica ( www.poptropica.com ), the kid-targeted virtual world created by author Jeff Kinney (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), launches its new publication, Poptropica: The Official Guide, today.  The title, the first in a series from the new Poptropica publishing, which is an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, provides fans with a detailed walkthrough of the site and background on the islands, including quests like Wimpy Wonderland and Steamworks Island, characters and behind-the-scenes content.  Additionally a color poster is included in the book.  To celebrate the release of the Poptropica guidebook, kids are invited to participate in a series of scavenger hunts that also begin today.  The book provides tips for decoding the clues in the online hunt to win exclusive prizes for a personalized avatar.
