CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

10/13/05

Good morning.  It’s Thursday, October 13, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing.

CBS has given full season orders to three freshman series – How I Met Your Mother (Mon 830p from 20th), Ghost Whisperer (Fri at 8p from Sander/Moses Prods w/Touchstone Television and Paramount Network Television) and Criminal Minds (Wed at 9p from Touchstone Television/Paramount Network Television). How I Met Your Mother kicked off on September 19 and to date has averaged a 3.7/9 A18-49.  Ghost Whisperer launched on September 23rd and has averaged a 2.9/10 season to date among A18-49.  And Criminal Minds debuted behind CSI on 9/22 and then moved to its regular time period.  On Wednesdays at 9p, the show has averaged a 3.3/8 in the key adult demo.

And a cancellation – despite being picked up and ordered by Fox, the network has announced it will not go forward with a fourth season of The Simple Life.  Though the friends aren’t as friendly anymore, Fox says the reason is the it didn’t have a time period in midseason for it. This does not rule out the possibility of the show to move to another network … Bunim-Murray Prods and 20th both suggest the show could go forward with another season

Tonight’s Premiere:
Bravo
: Celebrity Poker Showdown at 9p* MORE GOOD STUFF *You know, back in the olden days you had to actually be at home to watch your favorite shows according to the network schedule.  Then came VCRs – a lot of fanfare with that one.  And then PVRs and DVRs with timeshifting and searching capabilities, and finally TV on your cellphone.  And now … now you can download TV shows within 24 hours of their original air date, watch them on your PC, or pop them onto your iPod and watch them on the way to work.  How will they ever measure the true viewership of these shows? Yesterday Disney announced it would partner with Apple and offer current and past season episodes of popular ABC and Disney Channel programming for downloading to Apple’s iTunes newest free downloadable version 6.0. Also available will be short-form films from Pixar, approx 2,000 music videos, and video/TV podcasts.   Here’s how it works.  Each of the five shows – Desperate Housewives, Lost, Night Stalking, That’s So Raven and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody can be purchased for just $1.99 per ep and downloaded from the iTunes Music Store. It’s a very simple transaction any 10 year old can manage (the only group who could figure out how to program VCRs too).  The shows in the current season will be available for downloading the day after they air.  Additionally, all of the first season of both Desperate Housewives and Lost will be available immediately.  Once purchased from the Music Store, you can download them to your new iPod, yes, the newest one with video capabilities. As for the future – Apple won’t say if long-form television and feature length movies are next, but how could they not?

MTV has ordered a third season of its unscripted documentary series My Super Sweet 16, set to debut in 1st quarter 2006.  Last Monday’s season finale of Season #2 delivered 4.1 million total viewers at 10p,and a 2.9 P12-34 rating. For the full second season, the show averaged a 3.0 P12-34, up 8% over year #1.

20th has cleared its syndicated series Geraldo at Large in 55% of the country, ready for its October 31st launch date.  The newest stations to sign up include KPIX/San Francisco; WXIN/Indianapolis; KUSI/San Diego; WCNC/Charlotte; WFLX/West Palm; KOB/Albuquerque, KGPE/Fresno, WSJV/South Bend; WUPW/Toledo, and KGBT/Harlingen.  In all the markets clearing Geraldo at Large thus far, the new show will replace A Current Affair, and in general will air in the same time period.

TV One will debut its new series Sharp Talk with Al Sharpton on Friday October 28 at 830p.  The half hour weekly series is set in Levels barbershop in Brooklyn  where public officials, journalists, authors, sports figures, celebrities, policy experts and other interesting characters join Rev. Sharpton in tackling a wide range of cultural, political and economic topics. The House, Inc. is producing.

December 2 will mark the Tony Perkins’ last day at his regular early morning gig on Good Morning America.  The weather man will return to his previous local station, WTTG/Washington. In a memo to staffers, Perkins said his reason for leaving was to be closer to his wife and young son, who live in Washington. No definitive announcement yet from ABC as to who will step up to the plate next.
