Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 12, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from Cannes, France at MIPCOM.
Programming changes from CBS and NBC – Medium is expected to return to NBC on Wednesday nights in the recently-vacated Kidnapped time period at 10p, tho nothing official yet from the network. And on CBS, 3 Lbs. will slide in on Tuesdays at 10p, where Smith briefly aired. 3 Lbs. has a premiere date of November 14. This show stars Stanley Tucci and Mark Feuerstein.
And additional script orders have been given to NBC’s Friday Night Lights and to Fox’s Standoff.
Tonight’s Premiere:
MTV: Real World/Road Rules Challenge at 10p
Tonight’s Finale:
A&E: First 48 at 9p
NBC’s newest late night project is called Poker After Dark, set to premiere on January 2 at 2:05am Monday-Friday, and 1am on Saturdays. Poker After Dark is hosted by Shana Hiatt, and airs Monday-Saturday. Each hour-long episode will showcase six professional poker players competing for a Friday night first place prize of $120,000. The Saturday show will be a director’s cut and will highlight what happened during the week, with commentary by Hiatt. The show is produced in association with Poker Productions.
People here in France attending MIPCOM 2006 were rattled last night when we began hearing at around 930p of the small aircraft that hit a building in New York City. Soon thereafter, we learned via calls and emails from home that the plane was owned by NY Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle, who was on the plane along with another person. The plane flew into The Belaire at 72nd and York, after issuing a distress call. Lidle was a licensed pilot, and had said on several occasions he was very comfortable flying. Within minutes of the crash, fighter jets were flying over New York as well as other major cities including Washington DC, LA and Seattle. Throughout the afternoon, all New York airports continued to operate as usual.
Sundance Channel has picked up the US TV rights to Shameless, a British series from Company Pictures and Channel 4. The story follows the Gallagher family – mom has left, dad’s a drunk, and the six kids are left to fend for themselves. According to Hollywood Reporter, Sundance has picked up four seasons of the show and plans to add them to the schedule in 2007.
Now that I’ve been here a few days, I learned a couple more things:
- Eating inside the MIPCOM walls can be surprisingly expensive, so do the conversion math in your head before you pay five bucks for a donut.
- The little green signs all over the Palais of a stick figure running toward a door it doesn’t mean restroom – it means exit.
- And I don’t know if this happens to everyone or just me, but don’t be surprised if you find a man in the ladies’ room, it seems to happen a lot here.
How to blend in, or not, in Cannes:
- If you want to look like you’ve lived here for the past 60 years, get a good tan, sit in one of the cafes with a very small dog in your lap, order wine or espresso, light a cigarette that you’ll hold with the tips of your fingers from underneath, make your mouth as small as you can and pull down the corners, and each time an obviously American tourist drifts by, lift one eyebrow.
- If you’d rather pass for a stereotypical “Stupid American,” after you pay for dinner or drinks, leave a nice big generous tip. The waiter won’t mind at all, nor is he likely to tell you the tip was already included in the bill. Yep, that was me.
- Or, if you’d prefer to quietly announce your tourist status, be sure to wear your MIPCOM 2006 credentials everywhere you go, day or night. No, not me!
Tips given me to further enjoy the Cannes atmosphere:
- At the end of the day, find one of the little bars around the Palais and order a Pastis. It comes in a glass with ice and a bottle of water. Add water and enjoy the sunset over the bay. Very Provence!
- Take 90 minutes away from the Market and hop a bus to Antibes – wonderful old world town; or at the very least, if you must stay in town, walk up Old Cannes Road and stop at one of the wonderful restaurants up there, on your way up to the old castle.
- Go to Monoprix and buy yourself a new hairdryer. (Yes, but then I’d have to buy at adapter for back home, and you can probably predict how well that will work.)
There is plenty of business being done at MIPCOM 2006 – deals being feverishly written everywhere you look. This Market is taken very seriously as a place and time to get business done, not just a schmoozefest. Fox TV Studios has picked up the TV rights to the film The Devil Wears Prada, to develop the film into a television series for the Fox TV Network, says Variety. The project will be developed as a half hour sitcom, written by Robin Schiff. Prada opened in theatres last summer and to date has drawn in $124 million at the domestic box office.
Also in development for Fox is an animated project called Two Dreadful Children. The pair of dreadful wee ones are genius twins, and the children of redneck parents.
NBC has a new unscripted project in development from producer Gavin Palone called Bad Judge and starring Jon Lovitz. As a takeoff of all the daytime syndicated court shows, this show puts Lovitz as the judge, presiding over real cases, and laying down his judgements as he sees fit. Scarey, huh?! According to Variety, the tag line for this show is “The cases are real. The decision is final. The judge is nuts.” The project is exec produced by Josh Lieb, Gavin Palone and Jamie Tarses.
Add another to the cast of NBC‘s midseason series Raines – Madeleine Stowe. The series stars Jeff Goldblum as a brilliant homicide detective who talks to dead people because they help him solve the crimes. Stowe will play his shrink.
