CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

11/04/04

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 4, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Welcome to Day #1 of the November 2004 sweep.  The sweep continues thru and including December 1st.  Remember: play fair, no hitting below the belt and may the best station win.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Fox:  The O.C. at 8pm

Casting / Development / Production:

  • Elton John is working on becoming a television producer.  John, in conjunction with ABC, is developing a sitcom project about a rock star getting on in years, the people around him, his music and his fame.  The show will not be autobiographical, but according to Variety John sees it as a composite of himself and many music icons over the years. John has written a song for the show called Him and Us which will be included on his album Peachtree Road, scheduled to be released on Tuesday.
  • According to Hollywood Reporter, the folks at NBC and Saturday Night Live are developing a reality series wherein the winner gets a part on SNL. Sounds a lot like Last Comic Standing meets The Apprentice, with Lorne Michaels in front. Reportedly the project is being developed for next summer.
  • UPN is developing a new project based on the website www.VivianLives.com which chronicles the day-in and day-out life of a 20-something career woman in NYC, written by author Sherrie Krantz. Probable star for the project is Sopranos’ Jamie-Lynn Scala, so says Hollywood Reporter.
  • ABC is creating a US version of the Danish hit crime drama Unit One, being developed here by Ian Sander and Kim Moses for Touchstone, according to Variety.  The show revolves around an elite group of detectives, representing various branches of the police force’s homicide division. The format rights for Unit One were originally picked up here by William Morris from DR-TV, and then brought to Sanders and Moses. This adaptation of the show will feature an all female unit based in California.

Spike TV has picked up the Japanese game show Hey: Spring of Trivia, 26 eps, scheduled to launch on Spike November 11 at 9pm. Hey is one of Japan’s hottest game shows, and it will be literally translated for Spike TV’s purposes.

TBS and TNT have jointly picked up the cable TV rights to Universal films Van Helsing, The Bourne Supremacy, Wimbledon, Connie & Carla, Chronicles of Riddick, and The Door in the Floor.  The package will cost TBS/TNT approx $35-$40 million per Variety.  The first of the group to become available, post Pay TV window, is Connie and Carla in December 2006; the window for the remaining five titles begins in first and second qtr 2007.  Universal is also looking for a second cable net outlet to pick up Van Helsing in the post TBS/TNT window of 2009-2011, while Turner retains the film for one final year in 2012.

The New York Times Co. will close down its production arm, tho that closure will not effect the Times’ connection with Discovery Times Channel, according to Variety.  In fact, the closure will help the Times concentrate its fully attention on the cable network, launched approx 18 months ago, and which it owns 50% along with Discovery Comm.  Of the 30 employees effected by the closure, about a half dozen will remain to coordinate efforts with Discovery Times; the rest will loose their jobs.

Cynopsis Question for you:  Who do you think would be the best replacement for Craig Kilborn’s hosting duties on The Late Late Show? CBS has narrowed its search down to D.L. Hughley, Craig Ferguson, Michael Ian Black and Damien Fahey.  Do you like one of these guys, or is there someone else you think would be better?
with your pick, and look for the tally tomorrow.

Dan Levi, VP/Marketing for World Wrestling Entertainment announced the appointment of Ken Gelman as Director/Affiliate Marketing. Ken will be  responsible for managing the relationships with broadcast, cable, satellite and pay-per-view affiliates. He will also be working directly with the Pay-Per-View business.  Ken makes the move to WWE from the National Hockey League when he most recently was Director/NHL Center Ice Program.

Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group upped George Leon to EVP of Worldwide Consumer Marketing.  He will now take on overseeing consumer, licensing and merchandising products.  George was previously EVP of worldwide promotions and product placement for Sony Pictures Entertainment. He now adds responsibility for supervising licensing, merchandising and consumer products.

The History Channe
l presents This Day in History:
1979:  Followers of Iranian religious leader Ayatollah Khomeini storm the U.S. embassy in Tehran, seizing 90 hostages.  In the weeks that followed, Khomeini would seize control of the entire country.  After all non-U.S. citizens and American women and minorities were freed, the 54 remaining hostages would remain captive for 14 months, until Ronald Reagan’s inauguration.  On that day, after the United States freed almost $3 billion in frozen Iranian assets and promised $5 billion more in financial aid, the hostages were released.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia Question:  This is the only show in recent times centered in Delaware, more specifically in Blue Cove.  What show is this?
