Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 3, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Actress/singer/author Julie Andrews, working in collaboration with Target and Disney unveiled plans for the first National Princess Week, which will take place April 22-28, 2012. The event aims to celebrate the imagination of young princesses “early, aspiring or imagined.” The event also dovetails with the 10th anniversary of the release of Disney’s feature film The Princess Diaries, which stars Andrews and Anne Hathaway, and Disney’s release of the two Princess Diaries movies, The Princess Diaries and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, for the first time on Blu-ray. Target and Target.com will feature an array of Disney Princess merchandise highlighting princess characters, including apparel, toys and books, CDs, movies, personal care items and stationery. The week will also feature the new release in The Very Fairy Princess kid’s book series, The Very Fairy Princess Here Comes the Flower Girl!, co-authored by Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton and published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers.
Puppet Heap, a puppet and character design company, enters into a new partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products to design and create a new line of puppets based on the movie The Wizard of Oz (1939). The new Wizard of Oz puppet line, which will include a range of styles and sizes, will be produced by the company’s retail division, Puppet Heap Playthings, and will debut at Toy Fair in February 2012. Additionally, Puppet Heap Moving Picture Co., the multimedia arm of Puppet Heap, will produce short videos of the puppets in action, combined with clips from the original The Wizard of Oz movie, which will be used to market the puppets online.
WaterTower Music will release the new Happy Feet Two: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack on November 22, 2011, available both digitally and on CD. The soundtrack is comprised of 23 songs, including Bridge Of Light, a new song from P!nk, as well as new versions of familiar songs performed by Janelle Monae, Lil P-Nut, Robin Williams, Common, and Hank Azaria, and several songs by John Powell. Additionally, the album also includes an all new medley featuring vocals by P!nk, Common, Lil P-Nut and the Happy Feet Two Chorus. Warner Bros. Pictures‘ and Village Roadshow Pictures‘ George Miller directed movie Happy Feet Two, the sequel to Happy Feet, opens nationwide on November 18, 2011.
Sprout, a 24-hour preschool channel, will launch a new season of its crafts/cooking series, Noodle and Doodle on Thanksgiving morning, November 24 at 9:30a. In addition to new episodes, the new season marks the move of Noodle and Doodle to a seven-day-a-week schedule, which after Thanksgiving will air weekdays at 9a and again at 11:30a on weekends during the network’s The Sunny Side Up Show. Hosted by Sean, Sprout’s co-host of The Sunny Side Up Show and master artist, Noodle and Doodle features arts, crafts and nutritional recipes inspired by real preschoolers and their experiences. Noodles is a puppet that likes to help in the kitchen, and Doodle is a virtual/electronic pal who lives in a tablet device. Additionally, Sprout has also launched a Noodle and Doodle companion connect the dots app, Doodle Dots, which can be found on iTunes.
PBS Kids will premiere five new episodes of the preschool animated series Sid the Science Kid as part of Sid’s Technology & Engineering week, December 5-9, 2011 (check local listings). The new five-episode arc of the science-centric series focuses specifically on inspiring young girls to get interested in science. The first new episode, I Want to Be a Scientist! features actress America Ferrera as the voice of marine biologist, Dr. Rosalinda Cordova, Gabriela’s mom, on Monday, December 5. The episodes also features Sid’s mom, who is a computer engineer and comes to teach the class about computers. Sid the Science Kid is co-produced by The Jim Henson Company and KCET/Los Angeles for PBS Kids.
Canada’s Knightscove Entertainment‘s new TV production and distribution subsidiary Knightscove-Ellis International, enters into a deal with LA-based ICAP Media to release 500 titles from its catalogue internationally. The titles will be offered at the American Film Market (AFM) this week in LA. The Ellis Library contains an array of nature programming. Knightscove explains that its strategy is to focus on licensing its proprietary content to third parties, converting its content to digital applications and apps to participate in the ever growing market of content rental and purchasing via digital platforms, while moving away from traditional DVD manufacturing. ICAP Media is a unit of UK-based ICAP Plc. Knightscove also offers a range of family-friendly third party and proprietary movie and TV content through its Knightscove Family Films.
Rokenbok Toy Company launches Rokenbok Go Team Adventure Series (www.rokenbok.com/video-center/video-rokenbok-go-team-episode-1), a new kid’s mini web-based series. Designed to reinforce social values such as working together, sharing and saying you’re sorry, the Go Team Adventure Series is built around the helpful Rokenbok Go Team and features the company’s remote control vehicles, figurines, and building toy pieces. A new episode will debut first on Rokenbok’s Video Center (www.rokenbok.com/video-center) every two weeks, and will be available later on Rokenbok’s YouTube channel as well.

NCircle Entertainment will release the new DVD The Wiggles‘ It’s Always Christmas With You! wide on November 29, 2011. The DVD is currently available online and in select stores now. It’s Always Christmas With You! features 14 original songs and special celebrity guests in performances filmed around the world including Joey Fatone (of the group ‘N Sync), the Irish group Anuna, and two members of Australia’s The Chooky Dancers.
The new home entertainment title Dora the Explorer: Dora Loves Boots is set for release on Tuesday, December 27, 2011. Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, the new DVD title includes four episodes of Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer, three of which are new-to-DVD. The title also provides parents/adults with the opportunity to use the Gamify program and send their kids a free personalized phone call from Dora (this is a limited time offer).
Cartoon Network Enterprises will release the new DVD title Redakai: Conquer the Kairu The Journey Begins in the US on February 28, 2012. Based on Spin Master‘s new trading card game, Redakai: Conquer the Kairu animated series airs on Cartoon Network. The two-disc DVD release features the first 13 episodes of Redakai: Conquer the Kairu series and Ky’s Quest and The Power of Redakai special features that provide the back story of Redakai, as well as an exclusive BLAST3D trading card. The card included exclusively in the DVD features a previously unreleased version of Harrier, the signature monster for Team Stax’s Maya. Cartoon Network Enterprises will support the release of Redakai The Journey Begin,s with a kid-focused marketing campaign on Cartoon Network, as well as an online campaign on CartoonNetwork.com.
Casting: The Coalition for Quality Children’s Media’s Kids First! has launched its 2012 search for eight kids to serve as Kids First! Film Critics (www.kidsfirst.org/become-a-juror/2011FilmCriticsCampaign.html) for a 12-month term. The search runs now through December 31 and is open to kids 6-14. To enter, kids will need to submit a written and videotaped review of one of the following titles: Happy Feet, Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer, Glee!, Season 2, Spy Kids: All the Time in the World, or Barbie: A Perfect Christmas. Of the twenty-four finalists, twenty are selected by public online voting, and a special committee will choose four additional finalists. Judges for the 2012 search are: Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, Landmark Theaters and Magnolia Pictures, Ben Lyons, E! film critic and Good Morning America contributor, Thelma Adams, author of the novel Playdate and former US Weekly and New York Post film critic, and George Pennacchio, a member of the News team on LA’s KABC-TV.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Fandango appoints Tara McNamara to the newly created, contributing position of Family Film Mom. The founder and editor of KidsPickFlicks.com, which features kid/family movie reviews by kids, and of course herself a mom, McNamara will offer weekly insights on family-targeted entertainment in Fandango’s Family Friendly Guide (www.fandango.com/movieblog/tara-mcnamara.html). She will also serve as an on-air spokesperson for Fandango relating to family films. Based in LA, McNamara has served as a correspondent for Variety, CMT/Country Music Television, Sirius Radio Network and The ReelzChannel. She has also provided commentary for Clear Channel, Westwood One and Sirius XM.
Simon & Schuster names Heather Faulls as Production Associate in Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division backlist. Faulls previously worked for Macmillan.
PlayScience, which helps create play and entertainment products, welcomes two as it looks to grow internationally. PlayScience appoints Riwanon Gestin as a Global Research Lead, and Ross Marks as an Innovation & Research Lead. Gestin will head the company’s global research efforts and extend its research presence worldwide. Most recently, Gestin was with MTV Networks International research group, where she covered kids and youth brands. She previously toiled for IP Network and EuroNews. Marks will oversee research innovation efforts, develop new methodologies for gathering consumer insights and strategies for product development. He will also take a key role in managing the company’s online PlayLab. Previously, Marks worked with clients and brands such as IDEO, Microsoft, Rubbermaid, and Samsung.
