Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 20, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

FX: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia at 10p

With the big three automakers making headlines currently, Nielsen took a snapshot of their advertising spending, providing more evidence of the extent of the financial trouble. Through July 2008, GM, Ford and Chrysler all spent less than the previous year, same period, according to Nielsen Monitor-Plus. Ford and Chrysler each spent -22% less and GM dropped by -6%. On the other side, several foreign car makers are growing their ad budgets as Honda has added the most dollars at $71.5 million or +13% in ad spending over last year; Daimler increased by +48%; and Volkswagen by +23%. Not all foreign companies revealed increases, though as Hyundai decreased its spending by -17%, Nissan at -15% and Toyota’s figures are unchanged compared to last year.

The next round of countersuits have been filed in the Project Runway case.  Lifetime has filed naming The Weinstein Company, Bravo and NBC Universal as Defendants, suing for the exclusive rights to the hit show, and is asking a federal court to intervene. The most recent suit filed in this matter was by NBC Universal again The Weinstein Co., looking to keep the show on one of the NBC networks arguing right of first refusal, following a ruling by a state court in September that temporarily kept Weinstein from moving the show to Lifetime.

Beauty and the Geek, formerly on The CW, will find a new home on MTV as the network picked up six episodes and may option for more cycles of the reality series. Currently, MTV is discussing details with Fox21 and Katalyst Films and casting is happening on the new edition tentatively called Beauty and the Geek Celebrity.
TLC takes a look at the world of child beauty pageants in its new docu-series Toddlers and Tiaras. Produced by Authentic Entertainment, the series is slated to open in late January and each hour-long episode will follow different tiny beauties and their ambitious parents go through the pageant circuit.

This January, PBS wants to tickle your funny bone with its anticipated docu-series Make ‘Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America. Hosted by Billy Crystal, the six-hour series will air nationally on January 14, 21 and 28 with two one-hour episodes each night at 8p and 9p with repeat episodes airing the same nights at 10p and 11p (check local listings). Co-produced by Thirteen/WNET and Ghost Light Films, each episode spotlights a different American comedy genre and will include interviews from more than 90 comedians, writers, producers and historians including Rosanne Barr, Carol Burnett, Sid Caesar, George Carlin and Chris Rock and many more.

Award-winning marketing executive Matthew Rodriguez, SVP/Marketing and Creative for Twentieth Television and MyNetworkTV, passed away November 14, 2008, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after a brief battle with cancer.  Matthew joined 20th in 1994, overseeing all consumer and corporate marketing and promotional activities for the distributor’s entire library of first-run and off-net programs.  In addition, he managed all marketing activities for News Corp.’s broadcast network, MyNetworkTV.  Among the shows on the syndicated side marked by Matthew were Family Guy, Simpsons, 24, King of the Hill, Cops, Bernie Mac Show and Malcolm in the Middle.   In lieu of flowers, family members are requesting donations in Matthew’s name to the Downtown Dog Rescue-

Retro Television Network (RTN) added three new affiliates to its roster: WHNT-DT/Huntsville-Decatur-Florence, owned by Local TV LLC, and KRLL-DT/KFAC-LP in Albuquerque-Santa Fe, both owned by Ramar Communications.

ABC has given the green light to its comedy pilot The Middle, which will star Patricia Heaton, and produced by Warner Bros. TV.  If this one sounds slightly familiar, it was original on the ABC project development list for the 2006-076 season, reports THR, then prepped to star Ricki Lake.  The story is about a middle America family, with Heaton cast as the mom.

Also from THR, FX is looking at a drama project called AR2, focused on a group of college aged kids in the midwest who begin a second American Revolution. The project is from a couple of notables:  Prison Break’s Paul Scheuring, and West Wing’s Tommy Schlamme.

Casting Call: Playboy TV’s Foursome dating series is looking for more attractive males and females to participate in season three for a chance to experience a wild 24-hour blind date. Interested applicants need to email a brief description of why they should be on the show, where they are from originally and a fully-clothed photo to

Casting Call: Frito-Lay’s TrueNorth brand, in partnership with actress Helen Hunt, is asking consumers to submit written essays describing their own or a friend’s pursuit of their life’s passion. The selected story will be featured on a :60 commercial directed by Helen Hunt airing during the 81st Annual Academy Awards on February 22, 2009. The winner will also receive $25,000 toward their life’s dream. Stories can be submitted now through December 31, 2008 for consideration. For more information, visit

Separately, Ziff Davis announced it was discontinuing the print version of PCMag to focus on its network of PC-related websites built around, including blogs such as AppScout and podcasts including Cranky Geeks. Ziff plans to add more interactive features to the digital edition, adding slideshows of new products as well as video demos.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.
