Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 1, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Nickelodeon will premiere its first full-length stop-motion animated special, It’s A SpongeBob Christmas!, on Sunday, December 9, at 7:30p, following the holiday special’s CBS TV premiere on Friday, November 23. The half-hour special features John Goodman as Santa Claus. It’s A SpongeBob Christmas! was inspired by the classic Rankin/Bass holiday specials, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, and the SpongeBob song released in 2009, “Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas),”co-written by Tom Kenny (voice of SpongeBob) and Andy Paley. It’s A SpongeBob Christmas! was produced at Screen Novelties studios. The new holiday special will be supported with a new DVD, album and eBook, among other things:

– Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment, and distributed by Paramount Home Media Distribution, the SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! DVD will be available on November 6. The DVD features exclusive content including behind-the-scenes making of the special and interviews with the cast and crew, a pre-color animatic and Yule log.
SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! iTunes Extras edition features 30+ minutes of exclusive behind the scenes footage, a sing along version of “Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas),” among other things, and can be pre-ordered now. The special was released October 30, on iTunes, Xbox Video, Amazon Instant Video, PlayStation Network and Vudu.
– Nickelodeon will also release the It’s A SpongeBob Christmas! Album, which features 11 new songs, available for digital download from online music retailers from November 6  ($9.99).

ZeptoLab enters into a new license deal with Kernels Popcorn for its Cut the Rope star Om Nom themed popcorn pails, which will be available across Canada in spring 2013. The deal was brokered by Studio Licensing.


Ahead of the TV premiere of Disney Junior‘s new animated fairytale series Sofia the First, Disney is introducing the property in a book, online, album and with a TV movie. Sofia the First debuts in an illustrated storybook and eBook from Disney Publishing this week, in a online experience this Friday, November 2, in a digital EP album from Walt Disney Records releasing Tuesday, November 13 on iTunes and other digital retailers, and in the animated TV movie, Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess, premiering Sunday, November 18, 7-8p on Disney Channel and Thursday, November 22, 9-10a Disney Junior channel. The Sofia the First TV series is set to launch in early 2013. Kids/families can find a downloadable premiere party kit for Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess at In keeping with the mother-daughter themes in the movie, actresses Skai Jackson (Jessie) and Mia Talerico (Good Luck Charlie) and their moms will host a telecast on Disney Channel on Monday, November 19 at 8a. The movie will also be available that day on Watch Disney Junior, Disney Junior On Demand and Celebrity mom Alison Sweeney (The Biggest Loser) and her daughter will host a telecast Thursday, November 22 at 7:30p on Disney Junior.

In other Disney Junior programming highlights… the new seasons of Disney Junior’s short-form music video-style series Choo Choo Soul, which features singer Genevieve Goings, will debut throughout the day tomorrow Friday, November 2 on Disney Channel (8:25a, 8:55a, 9:25a, 9:55a, 10:25a and 10:55a) and also on Disney Junior. Two additional videos will premiere over the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, November 3 and 4 (8:55a) on Disney Channel. Choo Choo Soul features train station manager Genevieve and her engineer DC performing songs from classic Disney movies. Produced by Penn/Bright Entertainment, the series features Genevieve adding her special Choo Choo Soul singing style to the music, and DC dances and beatboxes along.

The Hub debuts the season two finale of the CG animated series Transformers Prime tomorrow, Friday, November 2 at 7p. Leading up to the season ender, the network hosts The Transformers Prime 26-Hour Takeover, beginning tonight at 5:30p. The marathon will feature all 52 episodes of the second season of Transformers Prime airing back-to-back.

Planet Nemo inks international broadcast deals for its new mixed 2D animation with live-action segments TV series Groove High (26×30). Targeted to K6-14, and co-produced with Telegael and Nexus, Groove High was commissioned by Disney Channel EMEA, which will air the series the UK, France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, India, Portugal and Spain. Planet Nemo has also completed deals with broadcasters including Canal Plus (Poland), Nickelodeon (Benelux/Scandinavia), Noga (Israel), PBS Malta, TG4 (Ireland), Televisa (Latin America), YLE (Finland), E-Vision (Dubai) and French language channel TV5 Monde. Groove High premiered in France in September 2012 and will launch this month in the UK, with other territories set to debut the series in 2013.

D3Publisher (D3P) and Nickelodeon release the new video game Winx Club: Magical Fairy Party for the Nintendo DS hand-held system in North America. Based on Nickelodeon’s new Winx Club fantasy adventure CGI animated series, the new game takes the fairies of Alfea School on adventures with mini-games. Kid players can design their own fairy with various combinations of outfits and wing designs, among other things. Developed by 1st Playable Productions, Winx Club: Magical Fairy party is rated “E” for Everyone by the ERSB.

P2 Games releases its all-new Peppa Pig app, Peppa Pig Theme Park, in the UK for iOS devices. Based on the Peppa Pig animated preschool series, the new app features more content, including 10 easy-to-play games and activities such as Train Ride, Hot Air Balloon, Candy Floss, Musical Water Fountain and Tea Cup Ride, which are designed to support early learning skills including concentration, hand-eye coordination, counting and creativity. Featuring animation, characters, music and sound effects from the series, Peppa Pig Theme Park also includes audio prompts by the series narrator John Sparkes.

Pukeko PicturesThe WotWots free educational game app, Love to Learn with The WotWots, is set to debut in China – available on Tencent, China Telecom, 91 helper and other promotional platforms and channels. Created by The WotWots’ Chinese partner, Grand Entertainment, the game app is the first in a series of preschool-targeted educational games that encourages storytelling and caring for the world. While the Love to Learn with The WotWots game app is free to download, it also features in-app and upgrades that are available for purchase. The release of this app comes on the heels of an exclusive deal with the Animation School of the Beijing Film Academy and Grand Entertainment to establish the “International Animation Technology Joint Research Centre” to promote the development of animated projects and promote film and TV cultural exchange between China and New Zealand, and develop animation technology in the synergy of enterprise, academia and institutional research. The first collaboration project between Pukeko Pictures, the Animation School of the Beijing Film Academy and Grand Entertainment consists of co-productions of Pukeko Pictures’ animated series The WotWots. These plans include special co-produced The WotWots TV episodes that will be unique to the Chinese market.

Cake, a London-based distributor of kid/family content, appoints Grainne McNamara in the dual role of VP/Development and Sales. In her new role, McNamara will work alongside Cake Creative Director and CEO, Tom Van Waveren on the company’s slate of future programming while also being responsibility for sales across all German-speaking territories, as well as Italy and Ireland. Most recently, McNamara served as Head/International Development for Telegael, overseeing both live-action and animated projects.
