Cynopsis: Kids!

11/01/07

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 1, 2007, and this is your first early morning.

Author Christopher Paolini’s Inheritance Trilogy, which includes the first two titles Eragon and The Eldest (Knopf), is a trilogy no more.  Alfred A. Knopf Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Random House Children’s Books, revealed that Paolini’s series will grow to include a fourth book (title TBA) and the books will now be known as the Inheritance Cycle.  Additionally, Knopf also said the third book (title TBA) in the Cycle will be published in the US and Canada on September 23, 2008, and will be published simultaneously in the UK by Random House Children’s Books. It will also be released simultaneously in the US as an audiobook from Random House’s Listening Library division.  Paolini says the reason for adding another volume to the cycle is that he was just 15-yrs-old when he mapped out the trilogy (9 years ago), explaining, “When I finally delved into Book Three, it soon became obvious that the remainder of the story was far too big to fit in one volume.”

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nickelodeon International has acquired the CG animated series Frankenstein’s Cat (30×11) from CCI Entertainment, for air in Spain, the Benelux, South East Asia, Australia, Latin America and Israel.  Targeted to K6-11, Frankenstein’s Cat is based on the book of the same name by author/illustrator Curtis Jobling.  The comedy revolves around the exploits of Nine, a nutty cat, and his best friend Lottie.  The series is produced by the noted Manchester-based puppetmasters Mackinnon & Saunders (Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride, and Bob the Builder) and Paris based Kayenta Production (Ca Cartoon, Scooby-Gang, and The Legend of Calamity Jane).

MARKETING/LICENSING

The Power Is Yours!  You may recall that as the catch phrase of the 1990s environmentally conscious animated blue superhero Captain Planet, oh, and his lovely green mullet.  And with that, Cartoon Network Enterprises and Local Celebrity have teamed in a licensing deal that will place Captain Planet on the front of a new line of T-shirts.  Targeted to men, women and kids, the new Captain Planet t-shirts are now available in specialty boutiques and department stores.  Born from an idea from Ted Turner, the animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers originally debuted on TBS in 1990.  The series is currently available in syndication and runs weekdays on Boomerang.  As it has for several years, Boomerang will again feature Captain Planet and the Planeteers in a 12-hour marathon next April to celebrate Earth Day 2008.

Heading out of this year’s annual Expo Licensing Latin America wraps up, a new group of Latin American licensees have signed on for the kid/teen-targeted animated series, Crack & Bonky, including: Doobalo S.A/de C.V. (socks); PIC S.A. de C.V. (sleepwear, underwear) and Manny Distribuciones S.A. de C.V. (coin purses, nylon wallets, markers, retractable erasers, pencil sharpeners).  These new the join the growing roster Latin American licenses, which currently includes: Chicabum (cellular content in Mexico and Latin America); Office Max (customized stationery); DTM (toys/figures); Chenson (Backpacks and Bags); Bondifiesta (bubble gum, confectionery); Majtan (gel stickers, decorations); Bonsa (gifts, office supplies, accessories); PTI/K.com (cellular accessories); MAE (Gift and Office Supplies); and Editorial Radar (kid’s magazines).  Additionally, Crack & Bonky is set to run as a weekly comic strip in the Sunday kids section of Mexican National newspaper, Reforma, from January 2008.

STONE SOUP

Among the eight individuals that will assemble next week to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, at the White House on Monday, November 5, 2007, will be Harper Lee, for her book To Kill a Mockingbird (HarperCollins/1960), for her contribution to America’s literary tradition.  Lee won the Pulitzer Prize for her sole book in 1961.  One of the highpoints in the US educational system (if you ask me), To Kill A Mockingbird continues to be a standard for English classes in schools across the US.  That said, the book is one of the most challenged books for school districts looking to ban books for reasons including subject matter and select language.  The Presidential Medal of Freedom is considered one of the two highest civil awards in the US, the other being the Congressional Medal of Honor.  Next week’s other honorees include: Gary S. Becker; Oscar Elias Biscet; Benjamin L. Hooks; Francis S. Collins; Henry J. Hyde; Brian P. Lamb; Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Cynopsis Weekender College Edition returns on November 15th!  Here’s how it works — if you’re currently a college student here or abroad, submit to Cynopsis your essay of 350 words or less on any topic relating to television.  If your essay is one of four chosen as the most insightful, original, humorous and/or well-written, it will included in a special College Edition of Weekender.  All four winning essay writers are awarded $350. Entries must be emailed no later than Friday, November 9th to me at [email protected], subject Weekender College Edition.  Students – be sure to include your name, age, college, college year, and major (if you know it), and how you can be contacted.   Good luck!

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Dr. Malore I. Brown joins Sesame Workshop as Project Director/The Electric Company.  Responsible for the overall management of the new multimedia The Electric Company, Brown will also head the re-launch of the series.  She will report to COO, Mel Ming.  Most recently, Brown served as an Independent Consultant to libraries in the areas of children’s literature and services, assessment of children’s literacy and program development and management, public libraries and grant reviewing.  She was previously Executive Director/Association for Library Service to Children, a unit of the American Library Association, as well as serving as  a Professor at a number of universities.

Classic Media names Karyn Schneider as VP/Licensing, North America.  In her new position Schneider oversees consumer products for the combined Classic Media/Entertainment Rights brands (e.g. Where’s Waldo?, Casper the Friendly Ghost, George of the Jungle, Lassie, Rupert Bear, etc).  Based in NYC, Schneider will grow the team there as well as working with Classic Media and ER’s many licensees.  Formerly Executive Director/Licensing for United Media, Schneider reports to Nicole Blake, SVP/Marketing.  Reporting to Schneider is Kim Anthony Jones, who was recently promoted to Licensing Manager.
