11/16/06

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 16, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Confirming the swirling rumors the past week or so, Randy Falco is making his move from NBC Universal Television Group over to head up Time Warner’s AOL division, replacing CEO Jonathan Miller. In a statement released by Time Warner Chairman and CEO Dick Parsons reads in part, “A key to Time Warner’s digital future, AOL is showing early success in transitioning to an advertising-focused business model, and Randy is a first-rate choice to ensure AOL realizes its promise.”  Randy will report to Jeff Bewkes, Time Warner Pres/COO.

Tonight’s Finales:
Showtime: THe Underground at 10p
Comedy Central: Freak Show at 1030p

Nielsen has just completed its first Product Placement Valuation Study, which is part of its Anytime Anywhere Media Measurement (A2/M2) initiative. Of interest in the study, 57.5% of viewers recognized a brand when seeing a product placement in combination with a commercial.  That’s in comparison to 46.6% who only saw the commercial for that brand. The results suggests product placement adds to the value of traditional advertising. The study was conducted over a nine-month period (October 2005 to June 2006) at Nielsen Entertainment’s testing facility in Las Vegas. More than 10,000 people participated in the screening of 50 broadcast and cable programs, where commercials and placements were featured for approximately 200 consumer brands.

The NFL Network will launch a new series on November 24 at 830p called America’s Game: The Super Bowl Champions, which ranks the best Super Bowl winning teams of all time. NFL Network has ordered 41 episodes, each voiced by names you’re familiar with including Martin Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, Gene Hackman and Bruce Willis.

TLC will debut a new series that focuses on three families who are struggling with unruly children in The House of Tiny Terrors. Hosted by author/mother Karen “Duff” Duffy, the families move into a specially-designed home where they will receive coaching and advice from clinical psychologist Dr. Tanya Brown. Produced by Outline Productions, the series premieres December 10 with double episodes from 8-10p. Single hour-long episodes will then air nightly at 8p through December 15.

Food Network will debut a new series with a twist on “fast food.” In Dinner: Impossible, Chef Robert Irvine, who has cooked for Britain’s Royal family and four U.S. presidents, will create a meal, despite various culinary challenges, all before the clock runs out. The half-hour series will premiere January 24 at 1030p and is produced by Marc Summers Productions Inc.

If you happen to know anybody in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, let them know they can now hear BBC World Service programs in English in around the clock following BBC 100 FM‘s re-launch.  It has been available in Cambodia since 1997 but recently received a new more centrally located transmitter.  The station airs programs on health, sports, business, music, and more including BBC’s flagship show, Newshour.

* BROADBAND & DIGITAL *

Owner of cable nets Golf Channel and Versus, Comcast is set to launch its new HD cable channel, Golf Channel/Versus in January with Golf Channel programming during the day and Versus content at night. It will be carried on DirecTV some time in 2007, and Comcast will launch the network on its own systems beginning in January.

HBO and AOL have partnered to launch a new broadband website for first quarter next year: This Just In. This Just In will showcase comedy based on current events from pop culture to politics and it will feature new comedic talent. The web site will also have video content and a blog so viewers can keep up with daily happenings. The web site can be found at www.thisjustin.com, which replaces the current AOL Comedy channel.

Turner Sports and PGA.com will make content available from the 2006 PGA Grand Slam of Golf on the iTunes Store as of November 22. The two-day tournament begins November 21 and consumers will be able to purchase 25-30 minute highlights packages for $1.99 each. This is the first time PGA.com has made golf tournament coverage available for purchase and download. The live coverage of the PGA Grand Slam of Golf will air on TNT from 7-10p November 21 and from 6-10p November 22.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1776-Hessian Lieutenant General Wilhelm von Knyphausen and a force of 3,000 mercenaries capture Fort Washington in upper Manhattan.  After a brief siege, three thousand Continental forces, led by Colonel Robert Magaw, surrendered.  The outlines of the fort, which incorporate the highest natural point in Manhattan, are visible today in the Washington Heights neighborhood’s lovely Bennett Park.

EMAIL TO THE EDITOR:

re:  INTERNSHIPS

Dear Tony, Stu, and Anonymous:

One of the most valuable things I ever did in my life was the full-time internship for a semester at a trade magazine.  When I approached them, they were unaware that such a thing existed.  I basically put myself forward as slave labor to land the plum position that I created.  They did agree to pay for meals and transportation, which, at the time, was a more than equitable agreement, especially as I got tons of media to sell for “used” as well.

These days, in addition to running my own company, I teach as an adjunct at a New Jersey public college.  I bring internships in from professional colleagues on a regular basis.  Some students are shocked to find that they don’t get paid.

Yet, if there’s a recurring theme in most of my classes, it’s “everything is negotiable.”
Students: even the cheapest organization might be willing to pay for your train ticket and feed you.
Businesses: yes, you are spending time and effort training the future.
But even the future’s gotta eat.

Hank Bordowitz
The Bordowitz Media Werx & Ramapo College of NJ.

Response – Re: Interns, To Pay or Not To Pay –

1.  Stuart Jay Weiss:  I’ve fallen in love with you for your response to Dom Caristi.
2.  Will someone, anyone, from NBC please respond and figure out a way to give this kid “Anonymous” his “ultimate dream” – a job at SNL?  That’s what Matthew Perry and Bradley Witford would do that on “Studio 60, Live on the Sunset Strip”…
3.  Tony Marinaro: Yeah yeah yeah, I did my internship at KDKA back in the 80s too, I was dirt poor, I worked nights and weekends at Pizza Hut, blah blah blah.  It was beneficial, but beyond grueling.  So I would NEVER wish those conditions on anyone.  But more than that – the simple truth is this:  The intern situation, as it exists day, does not promote Diversity.  Kids whose families can afford it get it, and those who can’t – don’t.  The word for that is unfair.

I would like to respond to the letter from Tony Marinaro, Director of Market Research WTNH-TV&WCTX-TV & LIN Television Corporate Director of Research

I also did a rewarding, non paid internship back in the day – the mid 70’s.
It opened a huge door.  It was a time when we had no calculators (they barely had been invented for the masses)  We had no cell phones (Most phones were still stuck to the wall). Walkmans were just becoming the rage. Two parent homes were mostly the norm. Women in the workplace were causing controversy. Things change.  Hopefully they evolve into something better.
I think it is time to recognize that when you ask anyone in your workplace to do something that benefits the company in any capacity, you should compensate them for it.  Even Slaves were given some food and housing.  It’s time.

Former Producer/Current Actor

Apparently it is not enough to go to college and get an education any more.  I hear more complaints that the new graduates cannot write a coherent sentence than I care to enumerate.  It is admirable that someone has the determination to work their way through college.  Internships provide an education and hopefully some insights into a chosen field.  What is wrong with making it a little easier by offering payment for services rendered, thereby enabling an intern to concentrate on their academic studies while receiving training in their chosen field? I maintain that companies will end up with a higher standard of employee in the long run, one who has a much higher skill level.

D. Nelson
