Cynopsis

11/15/07

Good Morning.  It’s Thursday, November 15, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.

Reality television this summer is getting a new show it probably didn’t expect or schedule — another O.J. Simpson trial.  After a preliminary hearing that’s been going on for the past week, the Nevada Justice of the Peace ruled yesterday Simpson and two of his cohorts will go to trial with 12 counts against them, including armed robbery, kidnapping with a weapon and conspiracy. If convicted of the kidnapping charge, OJ could land him in jail for the rest of his life.  If convicted of the armed robbery count, well, that’s mandatory jail time. An arraignment date has been set for November 28, and it’s expected a trial date will be set for some time this summer.

Tonight’s Premieres:
Fine Living TV: Time Makeover
Comedy Central: Kenny vs. Spenny at 1230a

Tonight’s Finales:
FX: It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia at 10p
Comedy Central: Drawn Together at 1030p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

In a blistering letter to WGAW President Patric M. Verrone yesterday from Thomas Short, International President of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), Thomas tallied the strike has caused a possible loss of more than a $1 billion, hundreds of thousands of jobs and more than 50 television shows have been shut down and he expects more will go dark. Thomas’ letter also implies the WGA may have intended a strike to occur no matter what was offered by the AMPTP, pointing out that Patric refused to reconsider timing of negotiations during a phone conversation between the two in late November last year. Finally, Thomas called for the WGA to “put egos aside and recognize how crucial it is to get everyone back to work, before there is irreversible damage” to the industry.

In Patric’s letter back to Thomas, he asked for solidarity from him in this fight, saying the WGA has received support from the Teamsters, actors and many IATSE members and unions around the world. Patric assured him the WGA is willing to negotiate. He further called on Thomas to help by asking the AMPTP to come back to the negotiating table and settle this strike.

British Chef Jamie Oliver crosses the pond again to introduce a new series for the Food Network, Jamie At Home, premiering January 12 at 930a. This new 30m series joins the network’s In the Kitchen daytime block and will showcase Jamie in his home as he cooks using produce from his own country garden.

In a new twist for Bravo, viewers will get the chance to select two of the participants for the upcoming competition series Make Me A Supermodel. The series debuts in January, yet viewers can go to www.BravoTV.com now through November 26 and vote for one male and female out of six finalists who will become contestants on the show and compete for $100,000. Hosted by supermodels Niki Taylor and Tyson Beckford, Make Me A Supermodel is produced by Tiger Aspect Productions, a division of IMG Media.

A little program juggling at MTV – the newest scripted series on the schedule, Kaya, has been taken off of Mondays at 1030p where it enjoyed a lead-in of The Hills, and will land on Saturdays at 10p as of November 24.  Additionally, the reality series Making Menudo has been moved to daytime, airing at 3pm starting this week.  This marks the third move for this show which debuted in late October on Thursdays at 1030p, then was moved to Sunday mornings at 930am.

In a multi-year programming deal, TV One has acquired from Disney/ABC Domestic Television a bucket of shows including The PJs, Day Break, Where I Live.  The programming package also includes The Walt Disney Studios theatrical titles including Sounder, Cinderella (1997), and Glory Road among others. TV One will begin airing some of the programs this fall with The PJs scheduled to debut this month.

Monday night’s premiere of The Salt-N-Pepa Show on VH1 (10p) delivered 1.9 million total viewers and earned a 1.1 A18-49 rating with 1.2 million A18-49 viewers.

IMAX Corporation and DreamWorks Animation SKG, Inc. will work together to release the studio’s first three 3D movies worldwide in IMAX 3D. The films are Monsters vs. Aliens in March 2009, How to Train Your Dragon in November 2009 and Shrek Goes Forth in May 2010. A fourth title, Kung Fu Panda will be released in IMAX’s 2D format in June 2008. This is IMAX’s first multiple 3D film deal with a Hollywood studio, and these films will be some of the first presented using IMAX’s digital 3D projection system, which launches June 2008. Additionally, all 3D titles will be simultaneously released in conventional 3D theatres. Paramount Pictures is the exclusive distributor of the films.

Don Imus signed a new five-year deal with Rural Media Group to simulcast Imus in the Morning exclusively on RFD-TV and RFD HD. The show will air live on weekdays from 6-9a. A rebroadcast version, Imus in the Evening will air on RFD HD from 6-9p and will be available via VOD for West Coast viewers and others. As previously reported, Imus in the Morning will be broadcast on the radio from 6-10a on Citadel’s WABC and will be syndicated nationwide by ABC Radio Network.

Access Licensing Group (ALG), a new, LA-based brand management and licensing agency, officially launched yesterday. ALG will work primarily with sports, lifestyle and entertainment brands in North America. More news on U.S. and Canadian deals will come in the next few weeks.

The pact includes executive producer services attached to developing, supervising, producing and consulting on MTV and VH1 branded programming. The first project emanating from this deal is From Gs to Gents about a group of guys competing to become gentlemen.

TLC‘s Trading Spaces is getting a makeover and returning to the series will be host Paige Davis, reports Variety.  While Banyan Prods produced the original series, A. Smith & Co. will produce the newest rendition of the show that put TLC on the map.  Also returning are designers Doug Wilson, Hildi Santo-Thomas, Laurie Hickson-Smith and Frank Bielec.  Trading Spaces is expected to return to airwaves in January.
