11/13/08

Good morning. It’s Thursday, November 13, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.  And as always, if you prefer to watch this morning’s news instead of reading it, click here .

Tonight’s Premieres:
Discovery Channel: HowStuffWorks at 8p
DIY Network: Renovation Realities at 930p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

The CW wants more of its freshman drama Privileged, ordering five additional episodes taking the season to 18 total. The network will encourage sampling by airing new Privileged episodes consecutively on December 1 and 8 following Gossip Girl, then those episodes will be repeated in the show’s regular time slot on Tuesdays after 90210.

At the end of this season, FOX is shuttering its Saturday late-night comedy sketch show Mad TV after 14 seasons. Mad TV originally launched in 1995 to go head-to-head with NBC’s SNL and presently two Mad TV alums star in their own cable shows: Nicole Sullivan in Lifetime’s Rita Rocks and Frank Caliendo in TBS’ Frank TV. Mad TV is produced by QDE and Warner Bros. TV with David Salzman, Quincy Jones and John Crane as executive producers. At the same time, FOX confirmed it will stick with its other Saturday late-night program, Talkshow with Spike Feresten.

FX set early January premiere dates for two of its dramas. The fifth season of Nip/Tuck opens on January 6 at 10p running for eight weeks and season two of Damages debuts January 7 at 10p with 13 new episodes.

BIO brings back its original series I Survived … for a second season beginning December 1 at 9p. During ten 60m episodes, survivors of horrific true-life situations relate their stories. The series is produced by NHNZ for BIO.

A&E Network renewed Intervention for a sixth season, per Variety. Produced by GRB, the one-hour reality program about substance abusers averaged 1.5 million A18-49 and 2 million total viewers during season five. Based on positive viewer comments, A&E also spawned the Recovery Project, a nonprofit effort to raise awareness of addiction and recovery.

NBC made a commitment with Sony Pictures Television to keep 43-year old daytime soap Days of Our Lives on the air for another 18 months, reports Variety. NBC’s production agreement for Days was due to expire next March and with this new extension the soap will air through September 2010 with another year tacked on if certain perimeters on the show are met taking it to September 2011. The previous production contract between Sony and Corday Productions was for five years and the new shorter time frame points to NBC’s possible reluctance to keep funding the daytime drama which reportedly costs $1.7-$1.8 million per week. The new contract also includes possible casting changes.

GSN recently launched a re-brand and released results from a two-part study commissioned by Frank N. Magid Associates and TRU pertaining to consumer gaming participation. Some of the results include:

  • One in three adults plays online games, watches game shows each month and participates on multiple platforms.
  • 104 million A18-64 watch game shows on TV each month; 100 million A18-64 play free online games on a monthly basis.
  • 54% of GSN viewers have interacted with a game show via online, phone or text messaging.

Housekeeping Note:  The U.S. Unemployment Rate was just announced this morning (11/7/08) at 6.5%, up from 6.1% the previous month, and the highest number in 14 years.  In an effort to help those who may find themselves out of work during these difficult economic times, Cynopsis is offering free Situation Wanted ads to all looking for work, for both new and returning clients, for the foreseeable future.  To place an ad or for more information, email
.  And lastly, to make sure even more people are seeing our classifieds, we are posting the full list of classifieds on our www.cynopsis.com homepage, updated daily.  Be sure to check these listings regularly – some very talented people looking for work!

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

HBO approved production for a fantasy drama pilot titled Game of Thrones, adapted from a book series by George R.R. Martin. The pilot, depicting an age-old clash of power set in a brutal fantasy kingdom, was written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss; Carolyn Strauss, HBO’s former President/Entertainment will be a co-executive producer along with Guymon Cassidy, Vincent Gerardis and George R.R. Martin.

USA Network pegged Joshua Malina (The West Wing, Numb3rs) as a new recurring cast member for original series In Plain Sight. Joshua will portray Peter, a recovering alcoholic during season two which is in production now in Albuquerque, NM.

HBO has a sizzling project from Red Hot Chili Peppers lead Anthony Kiedis, cites Variety. Kiedis is developing a series tentatively titled Scar Tissue about his unusual, rock ‘n roll childhood growing up in West Hollywood in the 1970s. Working with Kiedis is Marc Abrams and Michael Benson of Catapult 360 as creators and executive producers; Jason Weinberg of Untitled Entertainment also executive produces. Kiedis expects to be involved in the show perhaps as narrator or making cameo appearances.

Casting Call: Music composers are invited to create a new on-air theme song for syndicated daytime talker Live with Regis and Kelly as part of the show’s promotion “Live’s One Hundred Grand Theme Song Search.” To coincide with the show’s hi-def launch on January 5, a new graphic look will be revealed along with a fresh show open including a new musical theme. The winning composer will receive $100,000, their composition exposed on national TV and a chance at a career in the music industry. The entry deadline is December 5, 2008 and full information and rules can be found at www.liveregisandkelly.com. Live with Regis and Kelly is produced by WABC-TV in New York and is distributed by Disney-ABC Domestic Television.

Casting Call: Casting producers are looking for recently married couples to appear on a new version of the classic game show, The Newlywed Game. Interested couples should visit WWW.EMBASSYROW.COM and click on “Casting”.

Casting Call: A&E Network needs pack rats; people consumed by their own clutter to try out for a new docu-series. A therapist or professional organizer will work with the compulsive hoarder while the show provides a team of cleaners paid for by the show. Interested participants or to nominate someone, send an email to

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  YouTube introduced a new Sponsored Video format to enable both independent producers and larger publishers to monetize their content with search-based ads from major advertisers. Automated tools allow advertisers to decide which videos they want to sponsor and which keywords they’d like to target. An auction system allows bids to be placed and daily spending limits to be set, similar to Google’s AdWords interface. YouTube then displays relevant videos alongside search results, clearly labeling “sponsored videos.” YouTube also set a date of Nov. 22 to kick off YouTube Live, its first live streaming event starring rapper Will.i.Am, guitarist Joe Satriani and homegrown YouTube talents such as LisaNova. The news didn’t seem to help Google on Wall Street, unfortunately, on a day when the markets took another tumble. Google closed on Wednesday at $291 – the first time it has traded below $300 since Oct. 2005. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: A new study by Children Now, a non-partisan research and advocacy group, finds that only one in eight kid’s educational TV programs meet high educational standards.  The study, entitled Educationally/Insufficient? An Analysis of the Educational Quality & Availability of Children’s E/I Programming, looked at a total of 120 episodes across 40 program titles, then evaluating each show on a range of educational criteria that are associated with kid’s learning from TV.  According to the study, “kids are being short-changed by broadcasters,” as “few broadcasters offer more than the bare minimum of programming and confine their entire E/I schedule to one or two days of the week,” and that “more than one-quarter of E/I shows model harmful violent or socially aggressive behavior,” and furthermore, “the vast majority of programs contain no basic academic or health-related lesson.”  A similar study conducted in the 1990s found that between 20-30% of E/I programs were rated as ‘highly educational.’  The current study singled out PBS (PBS Kids and PBS Kids Go!) as delivering educational programming that rated “significantly higher” than E/I shows on commercial stations, specifically pointing to the emphasis on cognitive-intellectual lessons on PBS kid-targeted programs.  Conversely, E/I programming on commercial channels focused more on emotional lessons. Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Universal Pictures International Entertainment (UPIE) signed a deal with Dentsu Inc to buy a majority stake in its Geneon subsidiary.  The two will partner to market and distribute home entertainment titles in Japan with Geneon to be merged with Universal Pictures Japan when the deal is finalized.  UPIE will own 80.1% in the newly combined company while Dentsu will have a 19.9% interest.  An expanded local content lineup for the Japanese market is also part of plans.  Early 2009 is the expected time period for final approval.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
