Nickelodeon unveils plans to launch a new mom-targeted multi-platform effort called NickMom, which includes debuting as a primetime, ad-supported nightly programming block. The two hours of original content will replay immediately after (9p-1a), on Nick Jr. a year from now in 4Q 2012, and as web site that will debut Monday, November 14, initially as a blog on Nickelodeon’s ParentsConnect.com . The creation of NickMom is the result of Nickelodeon’s research with young moms, many of whom grew up watching the network, about what kind of entertainment they want to help them relax at the end of the day. Nickelodeon has already entered into deals with two charter sponsors for the new NickMom TV block with General Mills and Reckitt Benckiser. Nickelodeon currently has 30+ projects in development across various genres (talk, documentary, stand-up, sketch comedy, hidden camera, game shows, etc.) for the NickMom block. Development deals already in place include those with: Eyeworks USA (The Biggest Loser); Mad Cow (Madeleine Smithberg, co-creator/former exec. prod. of The Daily Show); actress/author Annabelle Gurwitch (You Say Tomato, I Say Shut Up; Fired!; Dinner & a Movie), and Hugh Fink (head writer, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson; and SNL writer). The NickMom web site will then evolve into a full, mom-centric humor site with editorial, photos, videos, gaming and community in 2012.
Saban Brands appoints Dream Theatre Private Limited as the exclusive licensing agent for its Power Rangers Samurai in India. Dream Theatre will launch products across apparel, stationery, bags and luggage and back-to-school categories and will be available in chain stores and kids and toy stores across India. The products will be designed to reflect the Power Rangers brand attributes such as teamwork, power, success and honor.
Discovery Communications enters into a licensing deal with Zap Toys for a series of mobile games under the Discovery Kids brand for the US and Canada. Discovery Kids’ Scuba Adventure will be the first title released as part of the explorer series, which invites kids to take on the role of young adventurers and travel the world. At launch, the game will be available for download for the iPod Touch and iPhone, and shortly thereafter for the iPad. Big Tent Entertainment, the North American licensing agent for the Discovery Kids brand, brokered the deal on behalf of Discovery Communications.
Univision‘s morning news and information show, Despierta America, is hosting a special holiday month-long on-air promotion, Despierta con Pocoyo, featuring Pocoyo from Spain-based Zinkia Entertainment‘s preschool character. During the promotion, which runs through December 1, Despierta America viewers are invited to log onto Univision.com (www.univision.com) and enter a written submission (150 word maximum) about why they should win one of 25 gift baskets of Pocoyo products, including toys from Bandai America and DVDs from NCircle Entertainment.
This Friday, November 11, Veteran’s Day in the US, Disney Channel will introduce a series of interstitial on-air Joining Forces messages featuring First Lady Michelle Obama and some of the network’s stars, including China Anne McClain (A.N.T. Farm), Adam Irigoyen (Shake It Up), Doug Brochu (So Random!) and Chris Brochu (Lemonade Mouth), all relating their personal stories of family members serving in the Armed Forces. Designed to recognize American military kids, the messages are part of Disney’s ongoing support of the White House’s Joining Forces national initiative.
Disney Channel picks up a fourth season of its popular animated series Phineas and Ferb, with new episodes set to roll out through 2014. Created and executive produced by Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh, the series is a production of Disney Television Animation.
Nickelodeon‘s SpongeBob SquarePants takes to Twitter again as SpongeBob and the gang kick off Runaway Road Trip week, during which they’ll tweet photos postcards documenting their vacation adventures. The network is airing five new SpongeBob SquarePants “get-away” themed episodes this week at 5p. Photos tweeted twice daily will correspond with the storyline of the day’s on-air Runaway Road Trip premiere. The week culminates this Friday, November 11 at 5p, with the premiere of a new half-hour special, A SquarePants Family Vacation, which follows SpongeBob and Patrick on a family road trip.
Nickelodeon focuses on humans, wild animals and the limited resource of physical space to co-exist when it premieres Nick News with Linda Ellerbee Dangerous Crossroads: Human Animal vs. Wild Animal on Sunday, November 13, at 9p. The half-hour special will be available via Nick.com beginning the following day, Monday, November 14, 2011. The special features kids talking about the various issues of humans and wild animals co-existing and different ways of addressing the problems.
The Hub will serve up a Muppet movie marathon for Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 24 from 1-7p. The network will showcase Jim Henson’s The Muppets in feature films including: Muppet Treasure Island (1-3p), Muppets From Space (3-5p), and The Muppet Christmas Carol (5-7p). Additionally, following the Muppet movie marathon, The Hub will feature a five-hour marathon of episodes of Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? (7p-12a) that also feature Muppet characters including Cookie Monster and Grover.
Vme will focus on American kids/families that deal with the issue of hunger on a daily basis when it airs the new special Todos Juntos Contra el Hambre (Growing Hope Against Hunger), a 30-minute TV special featuring the Sesame Street Muppets, on Friday November 25 at 7:30p. Produced by Sesame Workshop, the special will deal with the issue of hunger in an age appropriate way with the help of Lily, a new Muppet character whose family struggles with the issue of hunger. The special is made possible by support of Walmart. The special aired in October in English on PBS, and in Spanish on Univision and Telefutura.
Ludorum completes a new broadcast deal in Italy for its preschool series Chuggington. Under the deal public broadcaster Rai Yoyo (Italy) acquires the first season of Chuggington (52×10), which it will launch later this year. Chuggington can already be seen on Disney Italy, which picked up the first two seasons of the series (92×10), premiering in 2009, and the mini-episodes of Chuggington Badge Quest (52×4).
MarVista Entertainment, the exclusive international TV distributor for Saban Brands‘ Power Rangers, has licensed the broadcast rights for all 700 episodes of Power Rangers, including Classic Power Rangers and Power Rangers Samurai in India to Nickelodeon India. Nickelodeon India, a part of Viacom18, is available in 34.2+ million households in the country and is a 24-hour pay channel in Hindi, with the option of English, Tamil and Telugu audio feed on DTH.

Discovery Communications COO Peter Liguori will exit the company at the end of this year. Liguori was responsible for launching creative and brand marketing initiatives around the world, including overseeing the launches of Discovery’s joint ventures in The Hub, OWN, and 3net. Discovery Communications plans to eliminate the position of COO following Liguori’s departure. Earlier this year Discovery Communications CFO Bradley Singer announced he would be leaving the company. Prior to joining Discovery, Liguori served in executive leadership roles in the media industry, including as Chairman/Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company; President and CEO, News Corp.’s FX Networks; SVP/ Marketing for a joint venture at Fox; and SVP/Marketing, and SVP/Marketing, HBO.
