Cynopsis: DIGITAL
05.09.13
Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 9, 2013, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Starz’s suite of TV Everywhere services — Starz Play, Encore Play, and Movieplex Play — are now available for the Nook HD and the Nook HD+, as well as select Google Nexus devices including the Nexus 4, Nexus 7, and Nexus 10. The apps are available for free within Google Play and Barnes & Noble’s Nook Apps store. Starz expects to announce support for more devices and platforms later this year. In addition to the expanded device support, Starz also updated the apps to support 3G/4G wireless access.
— In other words: With 3G/4G connectivity now part of the offering, the Play apps are now more accessible to (authenticated) viewers on the go.
About.com has selected Newsy to produce “hundreds” of videos ranging from how-to content to short biographical and educational videos. For example, here is a video Newsy made for About.com about saltwater aquarium clownfish. Newsy will work with About.com’s editorial team to identify which topics they want to create videos for, and then deliver them in a variety of (ad-supported) formats. Newsy has similar partnerships with other online publishers and news organizations, including Mashable, National Journal, and AOL/The Huffington Post. The company says it has a deal in the works with a “top-10 most trafficked site.” Overall, Newsy says it produces more than 2,000 videos per month for its website, mobile apps, and publishing partners, all together generating more than a billion views a year.
Conde Nast Entertainment (CNE) has officially launched the Vogue video channel, which it previewed during its NewFront last week. At launch, the programming slate includes six original series, which will debut throughout this month: Voguepedia, Vintage Bowles, From the Vogue Closet, Elettra’s Goodness, Beauty Mark with Hanneli, and Vogue Weddings. Like with its video offerings for GQ and Glamour, the Vogue channel is available on Vogue.com and the brand’s YouTube channel, as well as on AOL, Yahoo, Twitter, Dailymotion, and Grab Media. Unilever brand TRESemme is sponsoring the channel launch.
The Hulu-Buyer rumor mill continues to churn: Citing several sources “close to the situation,” Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer recently met with Hulu executives to discuss a potential purchase of the premium video site. This would add Yahoo to a list of buyers/bidders that includes The Chernin Group, Guggenheim Digital Media, and Amazon. This comes after Yahoo’s attempts to buy France-based video site Dailymotion fell through.
PBS has launched two new channels on Roku devices — one for PBS and the other for PBS Kids. The PBS Channel will offer “hundreds of videos” spanning national and local station PBS programming, as well as original online videos created by PBS Digital Studios. This includes on-demand episodes of shows such as American Experience, Antiques Roadshow, Frontline, Masterpiece, Nova, and Secrets of the Dead. The PBS Kids Channel will offer “more than 1,000 videos” from series such as Curious George, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, Super Why, Wild Kratts, and of course, Sesame Street. Episodes of Dinosaur Train will also be available, but seeing as I’ve never heard of this show and seven year old Sahil would have definitely watched a show called Dinosaur Train, the show deserves its own sentence. Note: Modern-day Sahil would also watch Dinosaur Train (have I said too much?)
Popcornflix, an ad-supported movie streaming service from Screen Media Ventures, is now available for free on BlackBerry 10 (BB10) devices. In the US, the app is available via the BlackBerry World store on the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, and will also be available on the BlackBerry 10 when that smartphone launches in the US. The service/app offers access to over 700 theatrically released and independent film titles across various genres, including comedy, family, action/thriller, drama, horror, and Bollywood. Users can search for movies by genre, actor, or director, as well as pick from new arrivals and the site’s most popular films.
LinkedIn has launched a new “channels” feature on the LinkedIn Today hub that will allow users to access business-related news and insights on the network. Right now there are over 20 different channels covering topics such as “Your Career,” “Economy,” “Social Impact,” “Big Ideas and Innovation,” and “Higher Education,” with more to be added in the future. Each channel features a series of “influencer posts,” which include insights and advice from leaders in that particular area. Users can follow as many channels as they like, after which new posts and content will show up on the feed on their homepage.

Cynopsis: Digital Model D Awards
Entry Deadline: June 20
Late Submission Deadline: June 27
Awards Event: November 2013 (NYC)
Video ad platform providers Tremor Video, YuMe, and Adap.tv are all on track for initial public offerings this year, according to Bloomberg, which reports that all three have either picked bankers or are in discussions to go public. Tremor Video has selected Credit Suisse Group AG and YuMe is going with Citigroup and Deutsche Bank AG, while Adap.tv continues to mull over the decision.
This November, the Cynopsis Digital Model D Awards will honor excellence in the business of online video, from the creators making great content to the studios, media companies, tech providers, agencies, and brands working hard to get all of that great content in front of consumers. If you haven’t applied, do so now. Seriously, I’m waiting.
The amount of media consumption as well as the way content is consumed varies by market, according to Nielsen’s first Local Watch Report. For example, people 25-54 years old in Pittsburgh watch more traditional TV every day (about 5.5 hours) than the national average for that age group (about 5 hours). For OTT streaming, while it still only accounts for a “small portion” of overall video consumption, it is most prevalent in Seattle (8 minutes/day), San Francisco (7 minutes), and Detroit (7 minutes). New Yorkers and Angelenos stream 6 minutes and 3 minutes of video every day, respectively. Seattle and San Francisco also have the highest smart TV penetration among local people-metered (LPM) markets.
Disney Interactive has launched a new iOS app called Story, which accesses the video and photo library on your iPhone or iPod Touch to create a personalized “rich media narrative” of a past memory or experience. The technology behind the app collects and packages the videos and photos based on time and location. Users also have the option of editing these pre-created narratives as well as building their own from scratch. The narratives are stored on the app, and can be shared via Facebook, Twitter, and/or email.
Michael Barrett, a former Global CRO at Yahoo, has joined the Board of Directors at Tapad, a cross-device ad solutions company. Based in NY, he will assist in the company’s strategic vision and future. Barrett has previously held senior positions at Google, AOL, and Fox Interactive.
Vibrant Media, a “contextual technology” provider that embeds ads in relevant content, has named Khan Smith as its new SVP/Product. He will oversee the product team. Previously, Smith served in an executive capacity at both Akamai and Microsoft.
NBC News Digital Group is staffing up as it takes over sales responsibilities from MSN following NBCUniversal’s acquisition of MSNBC Digital Network from Microsoft last year. Peter Naylor is overseeing everything as EVP in charge of sales at NBC News Digital Group. Joining him: Eric Johnson as VP/Sales Marketing as well as Joy Robins and Joe Damiano, both of whom are now Senior Director/Ad Sales. Johnson will report to Naylor, while Robins and Damiano will report to Brian Matthews, SVP/Digital Ad Sales for NBC News Digital Group.
Critical Mass, a full-service digital agency under the Omnicom umbrella, has promoted Shaina Boone to the role of SVP. Boone joined Critical Mass in 2007 and created the Marketing Science analytics program for the agency. “We’re proud to promote Shaina to an executive leadership role to broaden her influence on the organization and the industry in creating best practices for measuring and constantly improving our work,” commented Critical Mass CEO Dianne Wilkins.

Doubling as an EXCLUSIVE: Last month, MTV, VH1, and CMT banded together to launch the “artist opportunities hub,” aimed at helping musicians showcase their work and reach new fans online and, potentially, on-air. Living on Artists.MTV, Artists.VH1, and Artists.CMT, the hub allowed musicians to create an account and submit their music videos. Based on fan support, these artists would get the chance to win things like seeing their videos join the on-air rotation at Viacom-owned music channels, or playing live on stage at the Hangout Music Fest, or opening for Hunter Hayes. Well the winners for the Hangout Music Fest opportunity, the first to be announced, are folks/blues/pop duo Johnnyswim and Americana group Banditos. MTV, VH1, and CMT plan to provide live-streaming coverage of the Hangout Music Fest. You can check that out at Hangout.MTV.com when the site goes live tomorrow. MTV, VH1, and CMT are also announcing a new opportunity, which is an artist competition at the O Music Awards for a chance to perform during 2013 MTV Video Music Award weekend. Future plans for the hub include mobile apps and a commerce option for artists.
