CYNTHIA TURNER’S
Cynopsis

05/04/06

Good Morning. It’s Thursday, May 4, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.

On the brink of Time Warner‘s taking over full ownership of Court TV by acquiring Liberty Media’s 50% stake, network Chairman and CEO Henry Schleiff is dropping his CEO role, tho for the time being he’ll retain his Chairmanship. There are a variety of reports of where the dapper executive’s next office will be, including one that places him high within the ranks at Time Warner, or perhaps a top dog role at CNN. Meanwhile back at Court TV, running the show  there will be current Pres/COO Art Bell and GM Marc Juris. Whether that exec team change when Time Warner owns the full boat, remains to be seen.

Tonight’s Finale:
WB: Supernatural at 9p

* MORE GOOD STUFF *

CBS

today is expected to announce the launch of its own ad-supported, free broadband channel, well ahead of what is suspected to have been the original announcement date – May 17 at the network’s upfront presentation to advertisers. While no official announcement has come yet, the rumor mill is busily churning out stories that the site will provide original content as well as full streaming episodes of current CBS programming.

The Fab Five descend on Sin City in the premiere episode of Queer Eye which launches its fourth season on Bravo June 6 at 10p. In this first show of sixteen one-hour episodes, the guys help a New York couple elope in Las Vegas in a creatively-themed wedding: Elvis, Bond or Rocky Horror. They stay in Las Vegas for two more episodes, taking the grungiest straight guys on the strip and making them better.

Superstation WGN will premiere a new original program, The Great American Poker Run, this fall. The game here includes part motorcycle race, part poker, while taking viewers through the back roads of America along with two motorcyclists – one celebrity and a rep from a top bike builder – competing against each other and facing challenges in order to collect poker playing cards along the route. At the end of each of the thirteen episodes, the cards will be revealed to see who has the winning hand. The series is expected to air in primetime with weekend encores.

AccuWeather, Inc. has unveiled a new TV channel for cable and IPTV subscribers that will deliver interactive real-time local forecasts and weather information. The new channel, part of the ICTV ActiveVideo Distribution Network, will enable viewers to search local forecasts, look at animated satellite-generated maps and local television weather broadcast programming.

Podcasting is popping up everywhere: ESPN Radio has launched a free daily podcast of The Stephen A. Smith Show. The first half-hour of the outspoken sports writer’s talk show, originating from WEPN New York, is available through iTunes and the new ESPN PodCenter at www.ESPN.com/podcast.

Two-year old TV One has passed the 30 million household subscriber mark, according to the May Nielsen Media Research universe estimates.  The network first launched back in 2004 in 2.2 million households.

Just ’cause we’re curious … there are only four singers left on American Idol:  Elliot Yamin, Katherine McPhee, Taylor Hicks and Chris Daughtry. Who would you pick?  Email us here with Idol in the subject line, and we’ll share your votes tomorrow.

Elma G. “Pem” Farnsworth, wife of Philo T. Farnsworth, the inventor of electronic television, died on April 28 at age 98. Author in her own right of Distant Vision: Romance and Discovery on the Invisible Frontier, she, along with her brother Cliff were part of her husband’s lab team and made all the technical drawings for her husband’s early experiments for television. Known as the “Mother of Television” Elma was also present on September 7, 1927 at the Green Street lab in San Francisco when Philo first demonstrated his electronic television invention. She was later the first person to appear on a cathode-ray-tube receiver via transmission from a camera’s at Philo’s lab. The notebooks containing her drawings depicting the television invention patent are part of the permanent collection at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C.

* PRODUCTION/CASTING/DEVELOPMENT*

VH1

has ordered up a new series for the fall called My Big Fat Fabulous Wedding, a reality series showcasing weddings with a bottom line expenses north of a half million bucks. This is like taking MTV’s Tiara Girls and looking ahead a few years. The new show will be produced by Pink Sneaker Prods., who also is the crew behind Tiara Girls.

Two new recurring roles in ABC‘s Desperate Housewives have been cast with Julie White and Kiersten Warren, both of which will be introduced in this season’s finale episode on May 21.

* EXECUTIVE MOVES *

Laura Molen

has been upped to VP/National Sales Manager at Spike TV, reporting directly to David Lawenda, SVP/Ad Sales. In her expanded role, she will manage the network’s Integrated Solutions Team, all national sales activities that involve integrated marketing and multiplatform sales for the Get More Action brand positioning.

NBC Universal Digital Media has hired David Vogler as Director/Strategic Marketing, where he will oversee digital design projects for the company.  In addition, Matthew Evans has been added to the marketing team, where he will lead cross-company strategic marketing initiatives. Both will report to Lisa Kraynak, SVP/Strategic Marketing.

IDT Entertainment has appointed Marc DeBevoise as SVP/Business Development and Strategy where he will oversee business development and growth opportunities for the company. In addition, Paul Campbell has been named SVP/Publicity and Promotion, overseeing all national and regional publicity and promotion for the company’s feature film and television projects.

Ilene Saul-Richardson has joined Real Simple Television as Executive Producer of the weekly half-hour life-strategies show, Real Simple which airs on PBS.

Two promotions in the HGTV DIY and GAC Research group – Julie Link to Research Director, managing DIY brand research and offering research project management support to Fine Living brand; and Robin Pate to Research Director, managing research for both HGTV and GAC brands

The multimedia enthusiast division of Time Inc., Time4 Media, will now form Time4 Entertainment, a production arm created to support Time4 Media’s video, film and television capabilities.  Heading up the new venture will be Paul Speaker as President, effective immediately.

The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1886 – In Chicago’s Haymarket Square, a bomb goes off at a labor rally for an eight-hour workday. Eight anarchists are later put on trial. Despite a remarkable lack of evidence, seven are sentenced to death. Three are executed, one commits suicide in prison, and the other three are eventually pardoned.
