Cynopsis: Kids!
05/03/12

Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 3, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Amazon Studios, which is the content development division of Amazon.com, opens up its development initiative to include comedy TV series and kid-targeted TV series. As with its movie development program, Amazon Studios is seeking original proposals from creators (writers, animators, designers, etc.) to upload their programming proposals at http://studios.amazon.com. In speaking to Roy Price, Director/Amazon Studios, he explained to me that at least some of what they are looking for in the preschool and K6-11 arena includes, “Fresh original ideas with a clear voice.” Price also noted that on the preschool side the proposed projects should have an educational theme, with at least a plan for educational curriculum to support the ideas. The kid’s series will be distributed through Amazon Instant Video, Amazon’s digital video streaming service. Each month, Amazon Studios plans to option one new project and add it to the development slate where it will be tested with the help of audience feedback, again likes its movie development effort. If Amazon Studios decides to produce a series, the creator will receive a $55,000 payment, up to 5% of Amazon’s revenues from toy and t-shirt licensing, and other royalties and bonuses. Amazon Studios’ production company, the People’s Production Company is signatory to the Writers Guild of America and to The Animation Guild, Local 839.  OK- so here are some of the finer details for those that want to submit a project — you must include a five-page description, as well as an 11-minute pilot script for kid’s shows, and a 22-minute pilot script for comedies. Then, within 45 days of a submission, Amazon Studios will either extend an option on the project for $10,000 or invite the creator to add the project to its site.  For those projects not optioned, creators have the option to remove their project from the site or leave it to get community feedback. Amazon Studios new series development is led by Joe Lewis, he was previously with Fox and Comedy Central, and Tara Sorensen, formerly with National Geographic Kids.

LICENSING

Beginning June 2012, Unilever will be marketing the dental-care products of its popular kid’s brand Signal Junior with key characters from the TV series and licensing brands Mia and me and Beyblade. Licensing promotion for both topics was initiated by m4e AG with Unilever and covers Germany, Austria and Switzerland. While Beyblade is already popular in the region, where it airs on Nickelodeon, Mia and Me will broadcast on Ki.KA (Germany) from August 6, 2012, weekdays at 7p.

Turner Broadcasting‘s kid’s health-centric series LazyTown heads into production on a third season (13×30). Slated to debut in 2013, the new season of LazyTown stars series creator Magnus Scheving as Sportacus, and joining the series as the new Stephanie, the lead pink-haired female character, is 10-year-old Chloe Lang from Connecticut.  Lang takes over the role from Julianna Rose Mauriello. As in the past, the series is filmed at the LazyTown Studios in Iceland, with special effects created this time around in Atlanta by Turner Studios (Ben 10, Level Up, Matrix and X- Men). Scheving and Bjorn Thorir Sigurdsson are producing the new season.

Canadian-based CCI Entertainment completes nine new sales in key territories for its preschool series Joe & Jack (39×7). The series has been acquired by ABC (Australia), Canal+’s Piwi+ (France), NPO Netherlands (Z@ppelin), RTP (Portugal), as well as Telequebec, Knowledge Network and BBC Kids in Canada, TVNZ (New Zealand) and Hi Tel (Korea). The series will also air on Disney Junior Latin America. Additionally, CCI has also signed a home entertainment agreement with ABC Enterprises in Australia for the Joe and Jack property. Joe & Jack revolves around the humorous adventures of a boy Joe, and his best friend Jack  who happens to be a cat. The courageous duo uses their imaginations to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, while underlining various themes including friendship and fun, among other preschool concepts. Joe & Jack was developed and is being produced by Maeve Mc Adam and Villi Ragnarsson of Ireland-based Dancing Girl Productions.  The series is funded by the Irish Film Board, RTE (Irish National Broadcaster), the Broadcast authority of Ireland, the MEDIA program of the European Union, Northern Ireland Screen, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund and the Section 481 tax incentive from the Republic of Ireland.

Poptropica, a kid-targeted virtual world, debuted its new safe social networking offering, Poptropica Friends (http://www.poptropica.com/about/friends-tour.html), earlier this week and within the first 12 hours had 500,000 kids from around the world connected. Poptropica Friends allows players to “friend” other “Poptropicans” interacting with them to find out what country they are from, which of the 26 Islands they have solved, and a little bit about their personality. They can also add their real-life friends and follow along with them on Poptropica as well. The Friends feature also lets players have Personality Profiles to display their Poptropica personalities and their achievements in the game. Players can take new personality-based pop quizzes each day that will add fun facts about them on their profile. There is no free chat option and no personal information is shared among players.
